Empires - restricted size?

Do the empires have a limit in number of members? I suggest that might be a good thing because my empire reached place 1. I have played only one game yet and that seems enough to be one of the better players in my empire. It seems the rank of the empire is a matter of sheer quantity rather than quality. Maybe a restriction of maximum players will give a boost to the motivation to be in a top ranked empire.

AFAIK, there is no limit.

It seems the rank of the empire is a matter of sheer quantity rather than quality.

It is sort of both, although quantity can overwhelm quality, as any Wal-Mart shopper knows.

The Gerontocrats are a very small crowd, but we've stayed in the Top 10 pretty much since Ghostwes established us.

p.s. The MVL, the TA beta, and "real life" have drastically reduced the contributions to the Gerontocracy. If anyone 35 or older is looking for an empire to join, we're only recreationally cranky and have some collective smarts about the game. I scoffed the Metaverse for ages, and now I have a fool's hope to see us in the Top 5.

I suspect once TA is MV-compatible, overall contributions will go up again.

Agreed. Empire scores decay over time and high numbers of member is helpful but if you look at the top empires you'll find that the massive scores of a few key players typically is the reason for the empires score.
