Forums Back Up

Huzzah!

We've completed our work for the night and the forums are back up and running.  You'll notice a number of visual changes, and you'll hopefully notice improved speed and general performance.

Please post any issues you run into here.  We've done a lot of testing this past week and tonight, but if something slipped through we want to know so it can be fixed quickly.

Thank you all for your patience.

Nice work, gentlemen. Spiffy fast response, though the Watchlists aren’t working yet (sad, because that’s a function I used a lot). I am particularly appreciative of the fact I can post in HTML directly without having to dink around with the tabs and options.

The only thing I can see that would be particularly useful would be to not just see posts by a user whose ID you click on but threads they’ve replied to as well.

(OK, one more thing because it’s my personal, private obsession … How about RSS feeds from each forum, sub-forum, and post? The first two would blip out whenever the forum/sub-forum saw a post and the last would blip when a post had replies, with full text. My centralization into using Google Reader for everything knows no bounds …)

kryo if you see this plz look into PM-Private Messages. I think something is wrong, send you a PM and got a reply but can't see it?!? Can only see what I wrote too you. Also plz look into the issue regarding the tred-reply box, it's very small :)

There's already an RSS feed for every forum and sub-forum. Click on the rss button that is displayed next to each forum.

Forgot, I use IE7.

I experience the same problem. Either it is a very small reply box, or if I click "enlarge editor", it becomes a narrow vertical one. Clicking on "expand editor" does nothing. I can't resize the reply box to the full horizontal layout it used to have. As it is now, editing replies is visually a chore.

The RSS feeds are a known issue and should be fixed later today.

Yes the PMs are bugged. Basically though I just said that I'll look at the mod queue after we get some forum testing out of the way.

Well, the forum seems to be working for the most part for me now. My problem last night of carriage returns not being accepted seems to be fixed, I believe. However, as has already been mentioned, the text box for replying is very tiny under IE7. I have suspended using IE7 here until this is solved, since it's almost impossible to format a reply.

Also, I just made a quoted reply (using IE7 at the time) to the thread "Fleet Cap & Tax Rate On Huge Maps Needs Fix" in the strategy forum. My portion of the text is fine, but the quoted section combined an earlier quote from before with the text I was quoting. Jambed it together to make it very hard to read. Basically, it took the quoted text that was in the original post, deleted the quote tags, and jambed the poster's text into it, then encapsulated all of it in quote tags.

I tried to edit the post using Firefox 2.0.0.2 and the edit did not take effect immediately. When I refreshed the thread under FF, it still showed my original post. However, if I refresh under IE7, the post is now corrected in both. Sounds like the edit system is just taking a little more time to process now.

Using Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11 and Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.2

Two things I was hoping in the forum update: - An indicator saying 'a dev has posted in this thread' / 'click to go to post'. - Merging the GalCiv2 / Stardock forum with this one. That they're both separate but tied together is weird. EDIT: Test

I can't seem to edit my posts either... it takes the submission but doesn't actually change the post, apparently. Also it still takes me like 45 seconds to post a reply - forum is as slow as ever :( EDIT: TEST

Another test - all the carriage returns out of my first post here disappeared, but the edits appeared, AFTER I replied to it... checking it one more time.

All the forums pull from the same database. However each product has its own site and it really wouldn't make much sense to merge them. Even less so since that would make the recent posts list a nightmare.

Appears I was correct - edits don't show until someone's replied, and all your carriage returns will explode out of it. You also get 404 errors when someone replies to your post in the meantime - though that's not much better than before where it would tell you you were banned or something. Going to add another edit to this one - reply first if you see it in the meantime. EDIT: TEST TEST CAN YOU SEE ME? :(

Well, I'm going to confirm Uranium's problem with the edit system. I'm now using the latest version of Firefox, and it's really weird, since the changes I make don't seem to take effect unless I go to the thread in IE7. Then, the changes seem to work in both browsers. @ Uranium - I can see your last post edit before any replies have been made to it. [EDIT] Actually, I think the edit system is just running pretty slow. I just went back to look at my edit I made earlier and it's now showing proper under Firefox, without having viewed it in IE7.

I can confirm I can see your edits too, and I'm using latest Firefox as well.

All the carriage returns have obviously evaporated out of your post.

HTML line breaks do still appear to work.

One empty line between these? None between these?

I second Squidlord. In fact, I was really hoping to see this feature with the forums being updated. It would be nice to see *all* posts made by a person, and not just threads they've started. I also hope the edit function gets fixed as well. It's rather annoying, to be honest. The forum definitely seems to be faster, though, which is nice.  :)

I take back my previous post. The forums still has numerous problems.  :(  Editing isn't working correctly, as everyone else has noticed. In addition, I noticed we *still* can't edit our posts after someone has responded to it. I also see that I can't break my posts into paragraphs -- it's as if the Enter key doesn't work. Please fix this as well! Otherwise we're going to have long rambling posts with no discernible breaks in them.  :p

Gah! Stupid edit function....

Yikes, a tiny, non-standard RSS icon that blends into the background of date-static and hides, cunningly, in the upper right corner … and for some reason not getting picked up by the RSS auto-discovery in Firefox. Huh, I wonder why I couldn’t find it! ;)

Yeah, all my line breaks are disappearing. :(

What browser you using? I'm not having that problem.

Okay, unless the small textbox issue has been solved already, then it appears to be an IE7 issue. I'm on my brother's computer right now, and he still has IE6 and the text box looks fine.

Now to see if the edit function still eliminates the carriage returns.

[EDIT] There should be a blank line between this and the last sentence.

Two HTML Line breaks before this sentence.

[EDIT 2] Woohoo. It seems to work fine on this browser. Maybe it got fixed while I was gone. I'll know when I get back home if it's good on IE7.

The small edit box should be fixed now.  Clear your cache, cookies, temp internet files and reload the forums.
