Ok I'm Slider Challenged

I'm totally digging this game and last night I discovered the other 9 pages of this forum, (doh, I wasn't paying to close attention I guess) and uncovered some answers to questions I had but the greatest thing I'm not getting right now seems to be the sliders.
I've installed the patch so I now don't have the thumbs up and down thing but the sliders, however they aren't really explained in the manual and the little blurb is kind of ambiguous...........
How do you read this thing? I see the centerpoints are different and then I assume the top is the challenger and I'm the bottom but what impact is it having and what do the positions really mean? Am I missing something or can someone please point me to a thread that might shed some light. Any help is appreciated!

You aren't fixed into a static position, you can change either position, challenger and party, by clicking the edit buttons displayed next to the candidate names. I'm not really sure what else to tell you, but hope that helps you.

On the candidate info screen, the top line of an issue slider is the national value and the bottom line is the state value. The arrow points approximately where the two values resolve. It could use a bit of tweaking for the display to look a bit better, but it gives you an approximate idea of how things are going.
