Failure to initialize display???

My computer has an interesting quirk. If I try to run the game from the CD AutoPlay prompt, it gives me the "Failure to initialize display" error. However, if I run it from the desktop shortcut, then it gives me the game with no words at all.

I have the Integrated display driver, if that helps any.
