Newbie GalCiv question

I have just started to play GalCiv, and was wondering if I should use the original game or the Altarian version while I am learning. Is the expansion the current version of the game, or does it have features that are too advanced to use while learning? I have the two options on my start menu: GalCiv or GalCiv - Altarian Prophecy.

I asked the same question on the galciv boards (www.galciv.com)..
Everyone pretty much said to play Alt prophecy because all it does it add stuff..
You can still play regular random maps just the same as the original, but it does have a campaign as well.
