Easter Eggs and such in Gal Civ

Easter Eggs and such in Gal Civ

The name speaks for itself.

Here are the ones I have noticed:

Star Names:
Sauron - Supreme evil Lord of Darkness (Mark II) from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, appears as a large flaming eye, lost ability to take a pleasent form after downfall of Numenor which he brought about
Betelgeuse - Red Giant star in the Orion Constellation

Ships:
USS Hero and other Survey vessels: Hummm.... looks like a certain USS Enterprise to me... only some minor mods

Misc Stuff not in game
Arnor - Brad's Empire, sister country to Gondor. Destroyed by the Witch-King of Agmar, lord of the Nazgul. ;p
Brad's Evil Walkthroughs on www.galciv.com Check out the empire and leader names

Of course, this is a rather pathetic list. :notsure: I guess my excuse will be I am too busy playing and learning the game right now. Some more are found in this thread: http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=46404 started by Nicolas Bossy. Time for peeps to add to it.

Back to the Easter Egg subject... I'm curious where Stardock is located, because I think somebody there is a Philadelphia 76er/AI fan. Iversonia system, anyone?

Don't get it, sixtoes...

Vex, I don't remember nitpicking your spelling.

In fact, I didn't even notice your spelling until you brought it up. I responded to what appeared to be you saying that Tolkien's not meant to be read by the masses.

I will, however, blame my reading "Vex" as "Vexx" on your use of two "4s" after the X. ;)

Well, Vridian - lemme 'splain it real simply. ;)

I was thinking that perhaps Stardock might be located in/around Philadelphia. (Or, that one of the developers is from there.) You've heard of the Philadelphia 76ers, right? Pro basketball team? Well, there's a guy named Allen IVERSON (aka AI) who's one of the best players in the game. IVERSON = IVERSONIA. It was just a thought...

Sorry sixtoes, they're in Michigan. I thought the same thing, though. AI is killing the Hornets, so . . .

Naz,

A really clever one from Brad (took me some 5-6 times to get it):

The illustration for the tech discovery "Transporters" (which gives you teleporters) is a Tardis (Dr. Who), i.e., a hi-tech English phone booth!

Thanks for the explanation, sixtoes! :)

Actually a TARDIS is not a teleporter (in the classical sense). Its quite multifaceted idea. It moves in both time and space and has a 5th D (thats why its bigger inside) (indeed some have hypothiszed that a tardis is infinte / and realy more of plane/dimesnion in its own right (mathematical) than a vehicle). If you want to get picky in terms of language the term tele-porter is valid but its much more than that.

In nut sheel (IIR from Dr.Who i saw years ago.)
TARDIS: (time and relative (or related by some) dimesnions in space)
Police box : its stuck like that (but in reality it has and should blend into its envrironment.)
Power: Iffy : techically a singularity source (referred to on some eps but other sincl. boosk refer to the time lords as using a single singularity to power all tardises.
Control: Tardis has several control rooms iirc (see 5d above)
Techically a Tardis is indestructible - dont recall even seeing one destroyed

heh enough nostaligia for now (more informed DW fans feel free to correct). However it would be really nice if something came out on the PC for Dr Who.

'1) Betelgeuse. Its also a real star name for what its worth, on Orion's belt (no MiB rimshots please )'

So is Altair, for that matter (which someone else pointed to as a Hitchhikers reference).

'I found a system named "Yggdrasil" if I remember correctly this was they way it was spelled.'

In GalCiv its spelled 'Yggdradil,' but yes, Yggdrasil is how its mythological namesake is usually rendered. There's alot of these in stars.lst... Alderan is misspelled (should be Alderaan). There's archaically spelled references to Arthur and Gwenevere near the end of the list...

Hey... Alderaan? Isn't that one gone a long time now? "Terror" star, remember? :p

Oh yes... and the "Gladstone" system... Has Brad been to Australia?

Antares is from the sky. ;)

Check out this NASA picture of the day:

http://apod.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap970624.html

Check that out. 700 times the size of Sol. 15 times more massive. 10,000 times brighter.

Oh, Vridian: There's a Gladstone here in Oregon. And I used to live a few blocks away from a Gladstone Street. :)

Altair is real star yes but I know that one isnt in Orion. Its in Triangulum IIRC.

Must add following stars to mods (heh)
Hoth
Galifrey
Coruscant
Ceti Alpha
Tarn Vedra
Wolf 359
.. list goes on

Altair is, of course, real, along with Vega and Deneb (forming the Triangle Wrath of Dog mentions). Not to be confused with "Antares." :)

Wolf 359 is also a real star. http://www.solstation.com/stars/wolf359.htm

Only 7.8 light years from Sol.

Steven Erikson's series is very good fantasy.

Immediate immersion though, read through it though.

I read them once, read them again and love the series.

Wrath_of_Dog I didnt recongise where all those stars are from, could you tell me? You guys are old ;), when did they make a Dr. Who TV show?
Sorry, this post is in reply to Drooling Iguana (#48). If you look at the first post, there's a link to a thread I started that mentions that and a few other Stardock references.

weber . - yes he's doen the Honor Harrington series. Its not bad but pretty simplistic and getting repetitive. However his technical detail stands our among sci-fi for its good capital ship battles. Overall though the plots are pretty thin.

Mr. Pink
Just call me gramps. Seriosuly most of those names are from various sci-fi.
Hoth = Empire strikes back (film)
Galifrey (Dr. Who)
Coruscant (Just about every SW film/book/comic)
Ceti Alpha (star trek II - and "space seed (TOS)). seel also manual index ;)
Tarn Vedra (Andromeda - current sci-fi series) -- although you dont really see it (Sinti anyone?)
Wolf 359 - TNG (infamous site of the battle between the federation second line fleet and the Borg)

re Dr. who

The first series IIRc was 63-64 and the series continued until about 1989 (although usually delayed in NA due to distribution by several montsh..and usually only seen on PBS..damn those pledge breaks). It still continues erratically ON BBC radio. There was rather excratable film about 8 years back (US made).

The series' basically died off due to a combination of bad writing/plots and some bad budget decisions -- to the point that it went from well funded intelligent sci-fi to cheap-ass Lexx-style program. (Frankly i couldnt watch McCoy - just too goofy and the situations just became soo stupid (ie paradise towers). If you plan to watch it STOP after Peter Davidson series. The best set is likely (now some will argue this) is the Tom Baker series (although pertwee is also excellent; but soem of the plots are a bit cheesier)

PS a sonic screwdriver is not a vibrating drink.
yes , he has no sex drive
the time lords can build a tardis but cant make robot dog that doesnt look liek toaster with wheels.

"drat..its a cybermat."
