Game Question FAQ

Non-mulitplayer issues

1) The retail box at the stores in August is the 1.0 version.  We are working on a 1.01 version which has enhanced multiplayer features and a saved game manager.  So if you see people talking about 1.01, they're using a version that is only available via Stardock Central to TotalGaming.net players and those who pre-ordered it. Don't sweat it, it'll be available to everyone shortly and there aren't any significant differences between them.

2) If you get a "Display Cannot be found" type error there are only two possible reasons we know for this.  1) Your video card isn't able to handle 32bit mode (some older video cards for instance).  Or 2) You're running a different version of DirectX than the game is expecting and in that event, take the safe route and download the latest DirectX from http://www.microsoft.com/directx (9.0c right now).

3) We have had reports that Service Pack 2 is causing some people graphical pain.  We are looking into this.  Our advice would be to wait a bit on SP2 as we're seeing a LOT of problems with a lot of products across the board with SP2. We'll be making adjustments to the game to ensure SP2 compatibility but it won't happen instantly.

4) IF you happen to get a crash to desktop for some reason check the debug.err file in your game directory to see if something is messed up. Installations, particularly on-line installations, sometimes have a corrupted file (sometimes as in very rarely).  If you still get a crash to desktop problem, you'll want to get Stardock Smart Exception. If you have Stardock Central, just click on the "free stuff" icon and install Smart Exception.  Otherwise you can get it at: http://storage.stardock.com/files/smartexception.exe

5) A demo version of the game should be out in the next couple of weeks. We want to button up the final 1.01 release and make that generally available to all players and then the demo should be out shortly afterwards.

6) The game should be at most retail outlets within the next week.

7) The version that we sell at PoliticalMachine.com ($29.99) is $10 more than the retail version but includes the Operatives Kit which is a way to add your own issues and TV interviewer questions.  There will be a $10 upgrade path for those users who want to get it as soon as things calm down a bit from the initial launch.

8) Yes, you can put your own pictures in for candidate pictures. They're just small PNG files (128x128 I think) thrown into the candidate images directory.

9) Make sure you have the LATEST video drivers.  Yea, everyone always says they have the latest video drivers and then after back and forth in email it's often found that no, they didn't. Thankfully DOOM 3 just came out and lots of people got the newest ATI and nVidia drivers. Trust us, they can make all kinds of weird things go away. Not just in this game but for all kinds of games.

10) You need a video card with at least 16 megs of RAM to play the game. While the map is 2D, the game is using a 3D engine. You can play the game on a very low end setup as long as your video card has 16 megs of RAM and can do 32bit color in Direct3D.

I Just bought the political machine and I am having problems with it. In the Introduction, right after the intro movie, the icons where you start a game are completely blank. Also, when i go into one of the options (not knowing what it is) all the words are super Large that they are literally across the screen. Can someone please tell me whats going on here. Thanks

When you report a problem, we really have to know more about your setup.

1) What OS are you running?

2) What video card do you have?

3) What service pack (if running XP) do you have?

4) What version of DirectX do you have.

If I were to guess, I would say that there is a video card/driver issue.  Did you follow item #9 from above?

In line with #9 and #10 above, the two reports we've seen of people reporting that the map was not displaying properly on Windows XP (i.e. it was showing up as all gray, without its textures) were resolved by updating to SP1. Think that was partially from its DirectX getting updated, but I'm just putting this out here in case its reported again.

FireLord:
It sounds like a font is not being loaded/released properly. A single reboot should get you sorted out.

Love the game. Bought it at Wal-Mart. How do I deploy the Fixer? I bought him and tried to eliminate the old lady storyteller (she was the ONLY operative in that state for Bush). Never got him deployed.

He will show up on a clipboard in the upper left corner of the screen. Click on the clipboard, the background on it should turn bluish, then click on the person to be "fixed".

Which driver do I need to download from ATI.com? I have Windows XP, but don't know what to select from there on the website.

Thanks.

Just a quick question -

I just got the game (version 1.00) and have downloaded the 1.01 update. I notice from the readme file that the TV interview feature has been removed, but that I can still appear on national TV "when the option appears on the map".

Can you tell me

(1) if the option becomes available after a particular event/date?
(2) how I'll be able to tell that the option has become available (does an icon appear in a particular state or does an interview screen pop up?)
(3) why the interview function as featured in the game manual has been removed at all? I honestly think that it would have made an excellent feature of the game!
(4) does the national media interview follow the same format as the local media interview would have done (i.e. as it is explained in the game manual)?

Thanks.

1) It randomly selects the turns that an interview will be available
2) A little icon of a camera shows up in a state. Fly your candidate to that state to go on the show.
3) it was for game balance reasons
4) yes

I have a question...

I've beaten my first opponent in campaign mode, but I can't move on to the next one. It keeps showing the same opponent and the same game progress (1/10).

Am I missing something obvious? Do I need a higher score?

Download the patch. I had that problem, until I got 1.01. Then it was fixed.

I was wondering how to meet with the local media in a state. The manual says that you can push the "Interview" button to meet with local media but I haven't been able to find that "button." I have no problems meeting with the national media but I can never figure out the local media. Any responses are appreciated. Thank you.

There is no State Media interview. They took that out of the finished version of the game without updating the manual before they shipped it out. Hope you still have fun with the game regardless.
