Influence and minor civs....

I am playing my first game of Gal Civ, and I like it. I am a bit confused about proper play though, and would like to know if there is some kind of guide to help me learn the game better.

Also, my question regards influence. I have a minor civ of three stars within 1-2 sectors of my home system. I have several systems around it. I also have 3 starbases. My influence is pretty high. Two of the stars have the skull and crossbones symbol, so I know they are teetering. However, it has been like that forever. Will they ever be turned over into my hands? Is there something special I have to do?

The nearest major civ is several sectors away.

Thanks for the help!

I've had some minor civs come over to me through influence, and some won't regardless of how much influence is in the area. The Alexians came over to me in my last game no problem, but the Scotts and the Carinoids both had systems in sectors that were over 3000 influence value in my favor and never budged for hundreds of turns. Not sure if this is a bug or a feature.

Minor civs have a lot more resistance.

im guessing its a roll of the dice so to speak.usaly what i do is build star bases around my planets and fill them with economic and cultural upgrades early.not only does this help if you run onto civs early in game for the U.P but if they place a colony in your sector they might transfer to your side thugh your cultural dominance.

It tends to make the AI stupid about declaring wars on the minor races (not even sure why it does so, except that the minor race has a weak military and can't/won't pay the blackmail) in my territory, since they usually defect to me fairly quickly.

Is your pet minor race being extorted and abused by the mean Drengins? Fear not, cheese to the rescue!

On the one hand, if you go to war and expend your a-m missiles, you lose a lot of strength fast (I've done this, but I had Excaliburs on the way), which makes the AI braver.

On the other hand, if you have enough, you won't go to war unless you want to go to war.

Speaking of which, I think you're right to some extent - in the aforementioned game, I did end up building about six Excaliburs and I think I leveled one of them up. So you're looking at ships with nearly 1200 hit points, 300 defense, and about 100 or more attack (I can't remember specifics), and my most powerful ship at the end of the game was listed as a particular anti-matter missile.

Weird.
