George Washington, Republican?

When I got to the penultimate opponent in the Republican campaign, I was surprised to see it was Lincoln -- I'd expected him to be the last. This gave rise to a lurking suspicion about who the last "Republican" might be, and soon found out that I was right... it's Washington.

What's the rationale for this? I understand the desire to include Washington in the game, but not why he should be included as a member of a party he didn't belong to. It seems to me as if it would've been better to have him as a final, hidden character available after both campaigns were completed.

Washington was ostensibly part of the Federalist party.  If you were to document his views on the issues of the day, which party would you say he is more inclined to be part of?

He had to be part of one or the other.  Thomas Jefferson, who by today's standards, would be a libertarian almost, was put into the Deocratic party.

If you look at the candidate profile, well, not in the beta but in the final version, their positions on issues are more aligned to their own views. So while technically belonging to one party or another, their views are independent.

Republicans have changed since now and then. They're more conservative now.

Washington -must- be a Republican.

The modern-day Democratic party can trace its roots through a long and twisted path all the way back to the Anti-Federalists/Democratic-Republicans. Since Washington was a Federalist, which opposed the Anti-Federalists, he'd have to be a Republican today to oppose Democrats, their descendants.

. Anyone who thinks that either party is MORE conservative today than in 1861 needs a history lesson.

Both Jefferson and Washington and Lincoln would be astounded at how far to the left the country has gone in the past cenutry and a half.

As for why we made Washington a Republican, see Mr. Subich's explanation.  Washington and his VP, Adams were nomainlly federalists.  Jefferson was part of the Democratic-Republican party which eventually became called the Republican Party.

Abraham Lincoln was a Republican and if he were alive today would have a lot more in common with Republicans than Democrats but no doubt be shocked at the changes in both.

hmm, Well Washington was a proponent of small government, even for his time would not have been considered an environment minded individual, was a proponent of a strong National defense(for his day and age). Definitely would be a Republican.

As for Lincoln being a Democrat?? Hmm he was a proponent of a strong centralized government, which I believe is democrate leaning but not sure exactly.

However, the Emancipation of slaves does not make him a Dem, as he only did it in order to get more support for the war. The war in and of itself was about the battle between the views of states as to wether or not the USA was a group of largely self governing states under a weak central government (confederacy) or if it was an indivisible union (North).

Also, Lincoln and Bush today have taken many measures that are the same in regard to security. Lincoln even suspended Habias Corpus to prevent discension and those who supported making peace with the Confederacy from gaining a following.

Washington and Lincoln are good people who have done something good for the growth of America...That must mean they are Republican!!
