GalCiv Writer

GalCiv Writer

A beta version of my Event Writer program is now available for any hardy souls who'd like to give it a try.

You can find a screenshot here:
http://www.ctuit.com/bill/galciveventwriter.jpg

You can find the instructions file here:
http://www.ctuit.com/bill/EventsInstructions.txt

This program has *not* been put through vigorous stress testing, so I do not recommend you install it without knowing what you are getting into. It will make several backups of the .event files in case something goes awry, but if you are not comfortable finding/renaming files on your hard drive, I highly recommend you stay away for the time being. In addition, as mentioned, this program is in a fairly untested state, so if this makes you nervous, stay away as well. I can confirm that GalCiv will load my modified event files, and fire off the events, so all seems well, but I only tested it on 4 machines that might not be representative of the general population (Win98, Win98SE, Win2000, WinXP, that's the extend of my testing facilities at work ;p ) Proceed at your own risk.

If you are interested in beta'ing this program, please contact me at:
[email protected]
and I will e-mail you a self extracting zip program with the install package. It is 1.7 megs, so if you are on dialup you'll have to be patient.

Future updates will be available via http download.

I moved the Events onto a separate form at the last minute, in anticipation of *maybe* adding more editing screens for techs, UP issues, SB modules and the like (no promises!), so in order to get to the events you have to select Edit>>Events.

The install package will add a program group, the default installation location is C:\GalCivWriter.

Please post here with any questions, comments, and feature requests.

Thanks!

Hey, Arturus, I read where Cari mentioned the 40% PQ ceiling. My theory is she was talking about your Civ-Wide PQ ability, not a specific planet's PQ bonus. What do you think?

Possibly. I haven't poked at it too closely.

I'd imagine that it's a pretty close mark for the limitation on a planet's PQ bonus from a single source, though. It wouldn't make much sense to close one entry point and leave a loophole the size of a semi-trailer open.

Hey Hawaii, does your program renumber the IDs used in mods when you load them? Seems to me, that that would be ideal, just in case you downloaded different mods that use the same ID numbers. Just wonderin' about it. :)

It will, but only when it matters.
a) When there are duplicate IDs.
b) When there are gaps in the SB Module IDs (because SB Module IDs have to be contiguous).

'Course, you do have to save the file after the renumbering, else it will have no effect.

HawaiiFive-O,

>>

I've been leaving Galciv alone with the expectation that the expansion would be available much sooner than it has been. I don't foresee doing anything until I can download it.

HF-0, They mentioned on the main page that Beta 4 has shifted some hardcoded text across to the english.str file. Do you know what that 'text' is? Is it all the remaining game text that was previously inaccesible? or is it only some select portions? Does this enable you to do some more things with the writer? customize more options?

All the remaining hard-coded text. Stuff like 'Sol', 'Earth', 'Mars', 'USS Hero', the names of the minor races, stuff like that.

it all the remaining game text that was previously inaccesible?

I believe so, CariElf went through everything.

Does this enable you to do some more things with the writer? customize more options?

The English.str function allows you to edit the entire file, these new tables included. There was no need to add code to support this, the old code already supported it.

So new stuff to play with, but nothing ground-breaking.

Hi HawaiiFive-O,

I've been trying your GalCiv Writer and I must say, it looks really good! You did a great job. :D

I've got two questions for ya. When making a new event is it ok to use 24/16M PCX images instead of 8/256 ones? Stardock seems to use those. If I have to reduce to number of colours it really ruins my event image.

And the second question... I created an anomaly which should increase my survey ship's defenses by +2 points (Power=2,0), but when came across this anomaly in the game my defenses went from 44 to 946 (or something like that)!?! Ehhh, that's 902, not 2. What did I do wrong?

Thank again for the Writer! LOL

Try 2.0 instead of 2,0.

I gave it a shot, but the Writer turns it into 20,0 automatically.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
