Democracy or Not

For decades we have had to put up with Politicians in Australia who take one proposal to the electorate during an election campaign, yet do an about turn and put in place legislation which contradicts it's policy platform after winning government.

Distrust is the by-word of democracy. The old "trust but verify" mantra that used to apply to nukes but really applies to anyone in a political sense. Every poliitician overstates the case for why they should be elected and why they are better than the other guy. But, in a practical sense, how does a freshman _________ in Congress or Parliament get anything accomplished. So, if they do achieve something, even that is suspicious.
The thing is, when someone comes up for reelection, the voter should measure the politician against both their actions and inactions. What they didn't do is sometimes the key.
