Defensive Stacks

Anyone who knows exactly which ships are choosen to do combat when defending? I was under the impression that the ship with the best defense in a stack also was the ship that would defend from an attack. But in a recent game, when defending from the Dregnin(who else:P), my battlecruisers was regurarly picked instead of the BattleAxes which was defending the same planet. Anyone have any clue?

I think it's the ship with the best attack rating.

So it's generally good to launch your battlecruisers and other non-battleaxe/hammer/defender ships so those will get their kewl defensive bonuses.

It'd probably be good if the game picked defender based on best defense, *and* factored in the defense ships' ability to combine attack and defense on defense.

I do note that if you have a stack of identical ships, the damage from multiple attackers seems to sprread out.

I had this stack of 3 Excals being attacked by a horde of Overlords ... after the twelfth had attacked, each Excal had about five hits or so (leaving them with 1300 left, about - heh, Excals are quite the monsters).
