Favorite Cartoons Of My "Childhood"

I was just thinking about some of the old cartoons I used to watch all the time. It came up in an article I just recently read.

Anyways. These would have to be my most favorite shows of my "child"hood, and beyond:

*Animaniacs... a hilariously stupid cartoon with puppy-dog things as the main characters

*Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... the most kick-butt heros ever, next to Spider-Man and The X-Men, and I used to have everything you could buy of theirs. I even had the weapons and sheets. I also had nearly every TMNT action figure.

*Power Rangers... well, they were kinda cool at first, but it just got old. Basically I didn't like how they kept getting new Rangers and all that junk.

*Mr. Roger's Neighborhood... I'm not sure if it would really be considered a cartoon but I watched it like it was. lol

*Barney... definitely something that got old FAST. The whole "big purple dynosaur hugging and holding a small group of childern that didn't realize how badly they were dressed" thing just didn't work for long. About from age 2 to 3 or 4.

*Digimon... a little bit later in my "child"hood, but it was in the time frame anyways. It was so cool at first, like Power Rangers. Then they just kept changeing the story on me.

*Transformers... vehicles turning into huge robots... what more is there to say?

*Beast Wars... same thing but with "animals"

*Attack of The Killer Tomatoes... that was a horrible cartoon but a very entertaining one none the less.

*I can't think of the name, but it was about these people that fought some bad guy on the internet. It's when computer animation first hit cartoons hard.

*He-Man... if you don't know about He-Man you should be shot!

Well, I think that's enough for now. If you have any you want to add, go for it. But I don't think you'll beat any of my list.

I would like to see some replays of the "Superfriends."  I used to watch that every day.

Capt., how could you forget the best past time cartoon??.............the one and only.........CAREBEARS!!! I can't believe you forgot them! And I know you used to watch them too. lol. Yeah, I miss all of those old cartoons. I think they should still play them on tv. But i guess they like torturing us with all of these new stupid cartoons. And I see you got the idea for your article from mine. hehe. I used to love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. What ever happened to them? *sigh* Yeah and I think Digimon was like maybe when you were probably like 14 or 15. So that wasn't that long ago. lol. I know the show that you're talking about with the people that fought the bad guy on the computer. I just can't think of it. If i remember correctly it was on Nickelodeon. And BakerStreet, I know for a fact that it's not Reboot. Humm.........If I think of the name of it I'll get back to you Capt. Sound good? Yea, thought so. lol.

Really? Reboot was a CG cartoon about Bob and his friends that live in a computer and fight Megabyte in the city of Mainframe. The only other such works that I am aware of are Tron and Cyberchase. Would love to hear about another totally computer animated cartoon about people that live in a computer and fight bad guys. Might be something I would like to watch.

As an aside, I think you don't know much about modern cartoons. If you can call cartoons like Samurai Jack, Teen Titans, etc. stupid, then I don't think you have ever watched them. Cartoons are being taken seriously by the entertainment industry now, for the first time in decades. A great deal of money, time, and talent is being devoted to the industry now.

I would like to hear what you think is so stupid. Perhaps you'd like to elaborate?

I'd have to agree on the Animaniacs...that was an awesome cartoon...although I haven't seen if for a long time. I didn't like the Power Rangers at all, nor Barney...although if you watch it now it is HILARIOUS if you add a discreet sexual innuendo...just pretend he's using double-meanings and it's great. I also used to watch Digimon for a bit, but they changed the main characters and plot ever few days and I gave up... Beast Wars was good too...I don't know what happened to it....eh...

Well, nice article....a lot of nostalgia in there...lol,

Carebear~ I'm sorry I forgot carebears. I knew there was one I was missing but I just couldn't put my finger on it. 14 or 15 you say? I don't know what you're talking about. That shows been out for at least 6 years now. the original season, the three seasons that went with it. The 2nd group of dgimon and the 2 seasons that were a part of it. Then there's like 3 other groups of little kids after that. I don't think this all took place in 3 years. Sorry.

Bakerstreet~ Thank you, that's it. Sorry to disapoint carebear, but you were right on. So, you're still watching cartoons too? That's awesome! My mom switched from satelite to cable and now we don't have Cartoon Network. That sucks man. Samurai Jack is a great one. It started all of the awesome animation we have now. I mean, we wouldn't have half the awesome looking stuff if it wasn't for this "new" form of illustration.

Zoologist03~ I'm glad to see you share some of my interests in cartoons. The thing is that Barney was one of those shows I started to like because my mom put me in front of it and made me watch it when I was a little fella. Yeah, Beast Wars was cool, especailly the guys like Ratrap and umm... the crocodile guy... I can't remember his name. I'm so ashamed I can't remember the characters or cartoons that I used to love watching.

Well guys, thanks for sharing your opinion.

Oh, and baker. What other shows can you name off, from the time frame I'm talking about, that you think were pretty good? I'm sure there's some I'm missing and you sound like you would know which one's I'm missing.

Capt.~yeah it's ok you forgot Carebears. I'll let that one slide this time. . Ok so I was wrong about Digimon. But I've only seen it ever since my brothers got into it. I thought for sure that it wasn't Reboot. sorry BakerStreet. I think I'm thinking of another show, my bad. And if it happened to be a show on Cartoon Network or something like that, I wouldn't know what it was because i don't get that channle. So yeah sorry about that.

Uh, if it was on Cartoon Network I missed it. Reboot was on Fox, if I'm not mistaken.

I always loved "The Archies" The older cartoons used to be lots of fun to watch but then they started bringing in all the power struggle stuff and fighting and violence so I lost interest in the newer junk. I always liked Flintstones and Jetsons oh yeah can't forget Scoobydoo. Always like Casper too. Tom & Jerry were always fun to watch and Roadrunner. Mighty Mouse was pretty popular. One of the funniest characters though was Precious Pup. GCJ

How about them Wacky Racers or Speed Racer? Those are some quality "back in the day" cartoons. I used to watch them all the time. Well, when I had Cartoon Network and now you can watch those old shows on Boomerang. That's an awesome channel to watch for Cartoons. Oh, and two of my all time favorites... Centuriens and Captain Planet.

What about Yogi Bear? Have we all forgoten about him? You also have Felix the Cat and Woody Woodpecker. Now those are some good old cartoons. And there's also Popeye, and Looney Tunes. Those were always the best.

Looney Tunes are still the best cartoons ever.
I never could stand Popeye, though. Talk about a one-dimensional plot... EVERY cartoon was the same--Popeye woos Olive Oyl, Brutus appears, beats up Popeye, Popeye gets spinach, beats up Brutus, sings his little song, roll credits.
Grape Ape, Augie Doggy, Quickdraw McGraw, Danger Mouse, Earthworm Jim, Speed Buggy...
Out of the modern line-up, I like PowerPuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Justice League, and The Fairly OddParents.

Transformers rocked! They're more than meets the eye after all

Oh... I can't remember the name of the show I loved as a kid in England. It was called Wursel Gumage or something like that. It was about a scarecrow that was alive of course. He had multiple heads that he could take off and use depending upon his mood. He had some friends call Sgt. Beetroot ,and some others. It was a cool show.

Oh!!! and Monkey! I think that's what it was called. It was about a man who was like part monkey or something, and he knew like kung-fu and such. He would take a little stick from behind his ear and it would become a big staff. He fought the bad guys of course

It was called Wursel Gumage

Yes!! I remember that!  Wurzel Gummage, and he was played by John Pertwee, who also played Doctor Who at one point.... and Una Stubbs was in it as well.

Monkey.....yeah, that was a weird show.  I never really watched that much.

I liked Top Cat, Deputy Dawg, Penelpoe Pitstop, The Banana Splitz, and Tom and Jerry.

Dang, has anyone else realized how difficult it is to name all the good oldies? The newer one's are a bit easier to define, but not much. Of course there's Samurai Jack, Justice League, Teen Titans, and some other good one's but not a whole lot now. I must admit that I like how they are trying to bring some of the oldies back to life. There's Transformers Armada, Transformers Energon, Transformers (a whole lot of stuff), Justice League, Teen Titans, Speed Racer, Scooby-Doo, Ninja Turtles (my personal favorite old one), and well, you get the idea...

I just wish the Star Wars cartoon was a permanent adition to Cartoon Network, because the micro-series was awesome!

I haven't even heard of any of these... what ever happen to just plain 'Transformers'. They were ALREADY more than meets the eye!

I don't really care for all the new cartoons today. But there are a few; Fairly Odd Parents, Mickey's House of Mouse. Those are really the only two I watch. But then you have some of the not new but not that old ones like; Hey Arnold, Cat Dog, Ren and Stempy, Kablam. Those were great.

gah, been trying to think.

Offhand the ones I remember from childhood ( sorry if any are repeats, some aren't cartoons, but all are Sat. Morning fare ):

Schmoo, Speed Buggy, Space Ghost, Blue Falcon, Captain Caveman, Scooby Doo, Land of the Lost, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Flintstones, Speed Racer, Johnny Quest, Mighty Mouse, Danger Mouse,... argh, mental block.

There are like 5 that are on the tip of my tongue.

Every afternoon when I was in like 4th grade there was a show called the "Hobo and Froggy Show". It was a hobo clown and a puppet frog and they were the MCs for the afternoon. On that show we got He-Man, the Three Stooges, The Adams Family, Gilligan's Island, and Scooby Doo, rotatted throughout the week. The really cool part was they would show old 1930's serials in between, and kept them in order. They showed Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers all the time. There was also an ancient Indiana Jones type serial that I can't remember. The serials were always better than the cartoons.

If I think of more, I'll chime back in. Maybe you oughtta do a blog on new cartoons?

Ooo, oo. Right when I hit submit I remembered Grape Ape. Also the old Justice League, with the Wonder Twins.

Alvin and the Chipmunks!!

Teenage mutant ninja turtles was the best cartoon series EVER and have you seen the rip job they're doing to it now
same with astroboy - i loved Astroboy as a kid but the new ones suck

Monkey rocked - I watched it with my dad - but I watched the Young Ones with my dad too.

Cartoons I loved growing up - the Smurfs, the Snorks, the Jetsons, The Flintstones, Flintstone Kids, Penolope Pitstop, Raggey Dolls, Superted, Banana Man, He-man and more importantly Shera Princess of Power.
Lady Lovelylocks, Strawberry Shortcake, Carebears, the Wuzzles, Gummi bears, muppet babies, tiny toons, original transformers, huckelbury hound, captain planet, ducktales, tailspin (but only sometimes), the little mermaid, garfield and peanuts
I loved all the Archie comics (especially betty/veronica and betty/me) - as books - but we never got the tv series - jealous much!!

In highschool I was TOTALLY addicted to Sailor Moon - it was so bad it was good.

I never liked ren & stimpy or animaniacs or the really boy! cartoons like beastwars etc and I don't like any of the animae digimon, pokamon, dragon ball z etc

Related kids shows i loved - Punky brewster, SOOTY and Full House -- and anything with Agro on it (Australian talking bathmat)

Most importantly - the Simpsons - as much as my mother hated it - I've seen every simpsons episode at least once if not more being that the simpsons is channel 10's filler - oh we don't have anything good to put in this slot no problem just stick in an hour of the simpsons.

OMG!! I used to watch Sailor Moon all the time. I remeber collecting all the little doll figures. lol. I still like to watch Full House when it's on. Even though it's not a cartoon.
