Research Buildings

Do they have to stick around?

I am in the middle of my first game of SoaSE and have a question? Once you have researched a tech tree to max, Military Tech say, do you need to keep the labs around? Are the upgrades still dependent on them, or is it a case of 'Once researched always there". Anyone know for sure or tried scuttling labs after they finished researching?

LOL im actually in the middle of a game right now and boxed in a corner against (hard) vasari. and was wondering the same thing. in previous games i have unlocked the super weapon then i thought coo. (delete building make something else) after i was salvaged i was unable to build or use the super weapon. but i have yet to experiment with it. so i have no clue about civilian tech tree. all i do know is that if you have a building researched then get rid of the tech building you are  unable to use it.

It depends on the tech. For some things, mainly abilities and ship research access, you need to keep the labs around. If you lose them, you'll no longer be able to say build heavy cruisers or fire super weapons. For other things, mainly say armor and weapon upgrades (most things that give +% bonuses), stay around even after you loose the labs.

Thus you can scuttle a few labs after your research everything. That is a handful of civic labs (unless you're advent, then its the opposite), as your superweapon will require 8 military labs. Note you won't be able to build things like trade ports if you scrap them all though.
