Thanks Kzinti-here's the next one for you

CONSTRUCTOR CREWS WANTED!!

*Got a degree in Astro Physics?

*Are you a member of the Space Builders Guild?

*Do you have skills in setting up remote Trading Outposts?

Or:

*Are you learned in cultural studies?

If any of the above applies then the Republic needs you!

We are in a period of unprecedented growth and with our enemies, the Terran Alliance, firmly on the back foot, never has there been more need for Altaria to spread its trade and culture throughout the farthest reached of our galaxy.

To that end the Federal Government is embarking on an ambitious programme of Starbase construction and for that we need your skills!

The requirements are for crews to man Constructors which are being sent to augment and build Trade and Cultural starbases in friendly near-space and potentially hostile Krynn-held territory in far-space.

The pay is excellent and the following should act as a guide:

*Pilot: AC3000/week
*Builder: AC800/week
*Trader: AC900/week + Commission
*Cultural Expert: AC1000/week

There are many other jobs available and all above payscales can be doubled for Starbases and Constructors operating near Terran held space.

Hurry-these posts are going fast: you must be independent, be able to operate autonomously and have experience of working in extreme conditions. If that's you and you are looking to expand your horizons then give us a call.

CONTACT YOUR PLANETARY STARBASE ATTACHE AND QUOTE REF: 666900MAD For further details and a brochure

Arrh what a lovely thing to say  :)  :) thanks a bunch Drengin...and not just Altarians required for the great constructor fleet. Oh one thing: Drengi not allowed though....

The following was a transcript taken from the Lilac House Triangular Office 2nd Jan 2237. Attendees: President Benis Mue III, Lilac House Chief of Staff: Heath Bartmanis, Chief of the Star Navy: Admiral Deg'ho Sinsa and Marine Commander: Lt. General Dul Tarot.

NB: This transcript was only made available after the ruling Populist Party passed a new law; the Freedom of Information Act 2300, to celebrate Republican rights and freedoms for Altaria's 24th Milennium.

(BM): Goddamit I'll have his frakking balls ripped off for this! How dare he portray this Administration as dithering and weak just because the Torians got to Antares first! Heath you read the little rat the riot act goddamit!

(HB): Yes Mr President, though the press are bound to cry foul if they see us leaning on one of their own. I would advise caution Mr President-we can handout payback at a time of our choosing: The Editor of the Decius Declarer will leave himself exposed soon enough..

(BM): It's frakking intolerable! First we lose Antares V to the Torians then this diatribe in the Capitol planet's most popular e-rag: I have an election to fight next month godammit!

(HB): Yes Mr President.

(BM): Well? I take it there's a reason that you've marched the Chiefs of the Navy and the Marines into my office? Tell me the good news!

(HB): There is a reason Mr President. Admiral please outline your plans.

(DS): Mr President first may I offer my sincerest apologies for our failure to take Antares V. It will not happen again-

(BM): Frakking right it won't Admiral-not if you value those bars on your shoulder and that 6 figure salary we pay you! Go on.

(DS): Er. We may have lost Antares V Mr President but I believe that the greater prize lies many parsecs to the East in the heart of Terran space. There we have Iconia V: a class 12 Planet with a population of 6 billion: most of whom we believe would be militarised by the Terran Alliance Defence Force. We have ordered 2 Fleets to make best speed to Iconia V: the first is the famous Task Force 1424-

(BM): Enough of the military acronyms Admiral-give it to me in plain Altarian!

(HB): That's the Rajak's Claw Battlegroup Mr President.

(BM): Rajak's Claw...hmmm. Commander Thom I believe. The legendary Ship's Captain. Didn't he once take on 3 Drengin Frigates with just one Cruiser and win?

(DS): That's him Mr President. He has 8 new Mark 8's in his fleet and he will be joined by Task Force 758-er the Spiro's Beak Battlegroup led by Vice Commander Sirita Muun and her fleet of 6 Mark 6 Cruisers.

(HB): Mr President she recently attacked a Terran fleet off Antares; a Battleship and its' escorts and resoundingly won. She was then ordered to stand aside and let pass a second fleet similarly configured but she attacked that fleet and destroyed it too. She's a bit of a loose cannon if you ask me and she hates Thom.

(DS): I would suggest she used her initiative Heath but I won't deny that there is no love lost between her and Thom. We-ah-feel that their rivalry will keep them both fresh and on the edge.

(BM): Do you indeed Admiral? And what were the losses in her 2 attacks? Would she not have been better waiting for the more heavily armed ships of Thom's Battlegroup before pressing home her attack?

(DS): She lost 2 Cruisers in both attacks but the Terran Fleets outgunned hers: it was a brilliant Fleet action in my opinion.

(BM): Goddammit Admiral can you not even control the Senior Officers in your Fleet? What you mean is that she wouldn't wait because waiting would have placed her under the command of the more senior Thom-is that it? What were her losses man!

(DS): There were 226 souls lost on both ships but more than 300 managed to escape in the lifepods and were rescued....

(Long Silence)

(DT): Mr President if I may?

(BM): Yes please go on General-I was just wondering whether the Admiral is going to personally respond to the families of all those who perished or whether we should get Vice Commander Muun to do it if she ever returns. Go on.

(DT): Mr President we have a following Fleet of 5 Advance Troop Transports each carrying 1 billion Altarian Marines, many of whom have been trained in Tir Qu'an offensive techniques. We are confident that we will be able to take Iconia V, then Slepur II and finally Heinlein V with these Troops. We can then pause or augment that force with Rapid-trained reinforcements from the worlds we take and press home our attacks on the remaining Terran worlds. We know the Torians have already started to appropriate the Terran planets well to the North so time is of the essence-we must not delay!

(BM): You know the Terrans are our genetic cousins?

(DT): Mr President sir?

(BM): The Terrans. We are related to them-a link whose origins stretch back to before records and only remain as legend. President Allan Bradley reminded me of this as he tried to sue for peace for a second time yesterday you know? It will be a tragedy of epic proportions this conquest.

(DS): I would remind you Mr President that it was the Terran Alliance who declared war on us-a completely unprovoked act and one steeped in greed. We must prosecute this war to it's natural conclusion-now is not the time for weakness.

(HB): Watch your tongue Admiral: it is the President you address not some witless naval rating!

(BM): It's ok Heath, old friend. The Admiral is right-now is not the time for doubt but hear this gentlemen: our lives are fleeting when compared to the span of the stars, whose galaxies we inhabit. It may be the right thing to do now but history will judge us more harshly, I fear.

(DS): But Mr Presid-

(BM): Enough! I approve your plan-do your best Admiral. Gentlemen you may leave.

(DS): Mr President.

(DT): Mr President we will not fail you.

(door shuts)

(BM): Goddammed military men Heath! They are such boors! Mindless killing machines that's all they are. Listen: Dr Hansa is outside: show him in. He says he has found a way of constructing true capital ships using what he calls a Q Field-says he has started work on constructing a Battle Cruiser that will make our Mark 8s look like a Tinsser kitten-this I have to see!

THE DOVE

The E-Journal that brings peace to your heart. Stardate 2nd August 2237

By Sander Tan, Chair of the Pacifist Party

TERRAN ANNIHILATION?

It is the question on all peace-loving Altarian's minds. What exactly did happen on 15th May 2237 when our Fleet and 6 Billion soldiers of the AMC attacked the sovereign Terran planet of Iconia V?

All we know for sure is that this lush world had a population of roughly 5 billion spread over 3 continents with numerous planetary improvements such as it's famed twin Quantum Power plants located in Terrihana and the much vaunted galactic wonder, the Restaurant of Eternity-very similar to our own on Caprica IV. many are now smoking ruins according to our monitor on the ground there and the stories that she is posting back are very different to that of the so-called 'Embeds' that went in with the Marines.

It was my pleasure to work alongside Tanya Thuisi as an independent monitor during the brief war against the Krynn Consulate and let me tell you she is fearless. There was fear in her voice when she radio'd me after the Iconia invasion, though: she also has the dubious honour of being related to one of the First Officers on board the Rajak's Claw, the Cruiser spearheading the assault into Terran space, but this has never dimmed her unbridled enthusiasm to bring peace where there is war.

There were two things above all that frightened Tan and made her question her very Altarianity: the first, the brutal Mass Driver cannonade that preceded the Marine invasion. Watching from the Troop Transport, that she had cajoled her way onto, she said that the ghastly sight of the Terran cities burning from the cold fastness of orbital space were now seared in her memory. Is there any glory in standing off and pulverising the planet from afar I wonder? The second thing was the ferocity of the fighting on the planet itself: this is the thing that has shaken her the most. It seems that the similarity between Terran and Altarian and the legend of our common ancestry has lent this conflict the wicked edge of the most brutal of civil wars.

In May Tanya was closely shadowing the Simonssah Armoured Assault Regiment's thrust into the New Canada peninsular and what she has witnessed there she says turned her blood cold. At the heart of the matter is the fact that the Iconian V authorities had militarised the civilian population and attacks were coming in from all sides. After a particularly bloody episode when Terran children were used as bait to lure in some soldiers of Sada Company and then detonated themselves and the soldiers sent to aid them, the Marines retaliated with unrestrained fury and annihilated the population of that benighted town, then the area and finally the whole peninsula. Not a soul survived, neither man, woman nor child.

It seems that atrocity and genocide is catching amongst our raw troops and this pattern was then repeated all over the planet-it spawned the expression 'to Sada' something or someone: I have even heard kids saying it as a joke here on Caprica IV-it is a shame they don't realise that many billions of Terrans have died for that piece of levity.

Tanya has followed the Marines from Iconia V to Slepur II and is now with them as they embark for Heinlein V: the count so far, 12 billion Terrans dead and counting. By contrast we have lost a mere 1.7 billion Altarian Marines. A lot of soldiers you might think but the difference is our troops are trained and bred for combat and to lay down their lives: the only thing that the Terran Civilian planetary Militias are guilty of is being led by a Government that has allowed itself to become embroiled in a vicious War with their erstwhile galactic cousins.

Some in the Federal Senate talk of proportional or symmetric warfare-they wring their hands and bleat about Altarian values and the need for accountability. The Priests of Saraha, meanwhile, don their white robes and continue to pontificate in time-honoured tradition. Maybe we should all stop and remember that there is nothing symmetrical or proportionate about genocide nor extermination and what we have here is none other than a Terran annihilation....

Sander Tan lost his seat at the General Election 3 weeks later on 22nd August 2237. The Mercantile party was returned to power with a slightly reduced overall majority....

My dearest son

This is my 2nd attempt. You have always teased me for being so poor with technology and sure enough I had just taken some time to write you this e-letter but I hit the 'delete all' button instead of the 'send' button. Oh Bensa you must be splitting your sides with laughter to think of it but I can tell you I have been so mad these last few minutes. I had to go take a dose of my favourite Arcean amber Tea-it had the desired effect.

So how are you my son? I miss you so. Janna misses you, we all miss you, your father too, though I can almost see you scowling when you read that last. It is the truth nonetheless. And we are all so proud too of our hero Bensa. You are in furlough, you say, prior to the invasion of Heinlein IV was it? Or Heinlein V? I lose track of all these planets with the strange numbers: your mother is only a simple soul as you know.

The previous 2 planetary assaults have been hard my son, from what you say in your e-letters and also what is all over GNN. There have been things said about what went on there….terrible things. But I don’t care what people say-you will always be my hero, our hero. The emotion in the words you wrote as you recuperated after the Slepur II (I think I got that one right) invasion moved us all deeply son. To lose 60% of your Regiment in the 1st day of that hellish assault on New Canada is indescribable-we really can’t begin to imagine what it was like my darling-even your father wept when he read about it-yes your father of all people-he does have a heart after all!

But enough of such things my darling boy. What is happening here you will want to know? Life goes on as normal such that you would hardly even know there was a war on. The only signs are the endless recruitment posters all over the city and of course all those televised funerals. Oh my son-wont you come back to me before you too end up as just a brief moment on the News Channels! You can demobilise after the 3rd planetary invasion: that makes you eligible after Heinlein-will you not come back to me? Janna needs you, I need you-we all do!

Ah but I am getting emotional again my son-forgive me. It is so hard sometimes. I read about how you witnessed the Fleet Cruiser battle off Slepur’s Crystal Nebulae and marvelled at the dancing lights off the Orion gates-such sights you have seen Bensa-such sights. And you a Sergeant now and in charge of your own Troop of Assault Tanks-it seems that you are born to it-this war thing-I don’t think that you will ever return to us and I despair for knowing it.

But I digress again baby boy-please excuse me. Back to boring old here: the Interior Secforce caught a Krynn spy last week would you believe? Right here on Xasica! He was snooping about the Senate House and it's fed all sorts of paranoia with certain hawks in the ruling party saying we should open up a new front against the Krynn. Can you believe that son? As if one war wasn't enough! There are many who say that the Mercantile has been heavily infiltrated by certain members of the War Party and the way things are carrying on I am inclined to believe them.

Here at home Janna is as boisterous as ever-he doesn’t appreciate the seriousness of the times that he lives in-he is only interested in when we will buy him a new Thalan Hover Board. It is as much as I can do to keep your father from visiting the same wickedness upon him as he did you that wretched time my son but I have prevailed so far. I do often blame myself for not doing more for you baby-is that why you left I wonder?

Anyway you are my son, my baby and my hero-‘the heroes of New Canada’ they are calling your Regiment for what you did on Iconia V and it makes my heart swell with pride. I pray every day that the mighty Saraha will watch over you and bring you back safe and well to me one day.

All my love

Your mother

The following is a transcript from Rajak’s Claw Battlegroup Bridge Traffic taken during the Battle of the Crystal Nebulae in the Slepur II System Stardate 8 June 2237

(Unknown Bridge Officer): Commander on deck!

(Cmd Thom): ok what have we got Lieutenant Commander Thuisi?

(Lt Cmd Thuisi): Sir, Navigation have plotted a superb interdict course as instructed-the Terran Battle Fleet will shortly be in weapons range.

(Thom): Well then we must congratulate your opposite number since it was his plot. Well done Lieutenant Commander Rejinken-good job Sanda: you’ll make Thuisi’s position yet.

(Lt Cmd Rejinken): I’ll take that as a compliment sir. Sir as ordered we will be in weapons range in 2 minutes. Shall I order Battle Stations?

(Thom): You shall indeed Mister.

(Rejinken): All hands Battle Stations! All hands Battle Stations! This is the Bridge. Immediate statrep required from Weapons, Engineering, Life Support and Medical.

(Thom): Ok time to hail the Fleet. Sparks do the honours.

(Radio Officer): Aye Sir. All ships this is the Rajak’s Claw-report status.

(Rejinken): Sir all departments have reported ready.

(Thom): Very good. Commander Thuisi supervise the approach. Helm: Saraha formation please

(Radio Operator): All ships have reported ready sir:

(Thom): Very good sailor-very good. Ok radio put me on speaker.

(Radio): Aye sir-on speaker now sir.

(Thom): All hands this is the Commander. We will shortly engage in our first fleet action. You have trained for many months for this day. During the battle we will all be tested to our limits: you will not fail me-I am quite sure of that. All I ask is that when the chips are down you trust in yourselves and you trust in each other. Out there we are facing 2 Terran Battleships and their escorts of 4 Frigates. It is an even match more or less but our skill, our weaponry and our defences are superior. I know that you will all do your duty-Thom out.

(Transcript is interrupted and is believed to have resumed some 15 minutes later. Systems critical alarms can be heard sounding loudly all over the Bridge.)

(Thuisi): Damage report!

(Thom): Helm: back up! Back up! Put some distance between us and that lead Battleship! Commander Thuisi what’s our status?

(Thuisi): Sir that last missile salvo has taken out half of our PD Combo banks and hull integrity down to 40%! Wh-what is it? No way could photonic torpedoes do that sort of damage and find a way past all of our defences.

(Thom): Agreed Commander. Intel suggests that the Terran Alliance was close to perfecting Photon Torps-I think that’s what has hit us-it's the real McCoy gentlemen-The Terran Alliance aint just gonna sit back and roll over for us. Helm steady, down 4 degrees and 2 degrees starboard-Rejinken get me the Fleet’s status! Saraha’s blood: I was not expecting this!

(Radio): Sir all ships have reported in: Sir the Tansa’s Crag has reported systems critical!

(Thom): Rejinken get the Fleet into arrowhead-put the Crag at the rear-hurry man! The battleships are making ready to fire another salvo-Goddamit where are our guns? Thuisi get down to Weapons and get a grip of Lieutenant Binjop-he has given us just one salvo for Frak’s sake-how long does he need to re-plot a firing solution? Radio get me Weapons!

(Radio): On air now sir.

(Thom): Lieutenant Binjop-listen to me son. Yes I know men are hurt and dying in there. Listen: this ship needs you to have a clear head-do you understand? There are 2 Terran Battleships out there preparing to take us out-we will not survive another full missile strike like the last. You need to focus Lieutenant. Yes that’s right. Yes focus son-Commander Thuisi is on his way to help-yes the Medics are on the way too Lieutenant. Remember what I said about doing your duty-you can do this son! Thom out.

(Unknown Operator): Sir 3 of our ships, the Talaha’s Dorg, Menop’s Tar and the Dutak’s Paw all returning fire!

(Thom): Thank Frak! Rejinken how we doing with the new formation?

(Rejinken): We’re there sir. Genius sir-the undamaged ships PD Combos should shield us and the Crag from their second salvo.

(Thom): Pray they do Commander-pray. Radio: order the fleet to go to weapons free and to coordinate fire on the 2 battleships and their Torpedo launchers. Rejinken: send to weapons to prepare to fire after the rest of the fleet and to target the lead battleship’s bridge hull. I am banking on the Terran ships being true to type and not having a whole lot of armour.

(Radio): Aye sir!

(Rejinken): Aye Commander-after the fleet fires?

(Thom): Correct. After the Fleet fires: we want the rest of our ships to draw their sting whilst we slip a salvo in unnoticed. Good I see Binjop’s got his act together finally and weapons are online again. Remember after the fleet Rejinken-we may only get one chance to get this right-you got me?

(Rejinken): Yes sir-after the first broadside from the rest of the Fleet.

(Radio): Fleet firing now sir!

(Rejinken): Hit! Hit! That salvo has done their ships some serious damage. We are taking more fire from the Frigates sir!

(Thom): Don’t you worry about them-our remaining PD Combos will make short work of their Photonics. Oh good shot Binjop! That’s it! Weapons: maintain that focus and angle of shot and repeat fire! I say again maintain focus and repeat!

(Unknown Operator): Commander another missile salvo coming in-forward ships have intercepted all but two-a single torp heading this way!

(Rejinken): PD banks firing now! All hands brace! Brace! Brace!

(Operator): Missile intercepted sir!

(Thom): That lead battleship is going down! Radio: order ships to concentrate fire on the following battleship! Do it now!

(Radio): Lead Terran Battleship destroyed! Brilliant sir!

(Cheering is heard above the sound of the ship alarm)

(Thom): Quiet everyone! QUIET! There is another one out there we must defeat and the Frigates. Rejinken order the Sinsa split formation and tell Dutak’s Paw and his ships to go after the Frigates. Oh good man! A superb strike Binjop! He’s taken out the 2nd Battleship!

(Rejinken): Split achieved sir! The Frigates are running for planetary orbit. I think we’ve done it!

(Thom): By Saraha I think we have indeed Commander Rejinken-well done! Well done to you all-it was a close run thing-never thought they’d have Photon Torps already. Commander I want a full status and damage report from all departments and I want to know how Tansa’s Crag is faring. Radio prepare a secure Transmission to Star Navy Command: I will send it from my Ready Room. Commander Rejinken you have the Bridge-it’s been a hell of a day….

ENCYCLOPAEDIA ALTARICUS

BI-MILENNIUM CLASSICAL EDITION

THE KRYNN DILEMMA 2231-2241

Ever since the Religious order of the Krynn declaration of war on the Altarians in 2231, in concert with their allies the Drengin and their subsequent peace overtures after the loss of the planet Drengi itself in 2233; the Altarian political leadership was at a loss as to how to treat with the Krynn Consulate. This religious messianic insectoid sect that expanded by converting the Suffours (sic: unbelievers) by violent force or cultural subjugation was not a 'race' that the Altarian traits of peace and harmony were ever likely to convert to their cause.

Thus by the time of the 2nd Altarian Compact, that added the Thalans to the Alliance forged, at first, to counter naked Drengin aggression (The 1st Altarian Compact consisted of the Iconians, the Arceans and the Torians) and then triggered by the Terran declaration of War on a seemingly weak Altaria, the Krynn were content to be sidelined by their neutrality.

As the tide of this 2nd Galactic War war turned against the Terrans the Thalans and the Torians who had many star systems that abutted onto Krynn space took their chance and declared war in late 2236. The Iconians followed suit in January 2237. This left the Altarians who steadfastly refused to declare war on their erstwhile aggressors. There is some evidence to suggest that the ruling political party, the Mercantiles, led by President Benis Mue, had been heavily and secretly infiltrated at this time by agents loyal to the War Party led by Senator Shimo'on Salak'ta of Caprica IV and that these were influencing the party to pursue policies inimical to the Altarian way of peace and harmony.

To that end the end-game that was playing out for the Terrans who were seeing both parts of their Galactic empire being swallowed up by the Arceans/Torians to the North and the Altarians in the South also roped in the Krynn whose worlds were evenly split between the Upper (North East) and Lower Quadrants (South West) of the Galaxy. Their lower Galaxy interests now found themselves menaced by no fewer than 4 Altarian Battlegroups, one of which, The Rajan's Claw, was led by none other than the famed Starship Commander, Serjuan Thom, the much decorated and admired hero of the 1st Drengin War.

Timeography:

*15 May 2237: Terran World Iconia V invaded by 5bn Troops of the Altarian Marine Corps (AMC): 6 bn Terrans slaughtered with minimal loss of life to AMC personnel.
*8 June 2237: Battle of the Crystal Nebulae off Slepur II: Masterly tactical fleet action by Cmdr Thom destroys 2 Terran Battleships, 4 Frigates and 6 Heavy Fighter Escorts
*10 June 2237: Terran World Slepur II invaded by 3.2bn Troops of the AMC. 6bn Terrans of all grades Civilian and Military slaughtered. AMC suffers 50% casualties.
*22 August 2237: Altarian Star Senate holds secondary vote on brutal war tactics. Motion to retain the status quo only narrowly carried after major rebellion within Mercantile Party forces Benis Mue to ally with the War Party.
*22 August 2237: Rala's Fist BG, led by Cmdr Sirla Sran, clears Heinlein V of it's orbital defences prior to invasion of 3.1bn AMC. The 6bn Terran Civilian, militia and Defence forces inflict 66% casualties this time in suicidal defence of their world.
Aug-Oct 2237: Rala's Fist BG initiates blockade of Heinlein I, the last Terran world in this region as there are not enough Troops to take the planet.
1 Sep 2237: Krynn Leader. Ynrhed Eidden delivers ultimatum to Altarian High Command to withdraw its BattleGroups from Krynn space or face the consequences. Benis Mue protests Altaria's peaceful intentions to the Krynn in 30 minute personal Satcall to Eidden
22 Oct 2237: Heinlein I taken by 2.4bn AMC Troops trained in Tir Qu'uan techniques. 6bn Terrans wiped out or captured.

Technolography:

Krynn Battleship: designer unknown. Unknown weaponry type but formidable missile and PD (Combo) technology as well as superior hull capable of absorbing punishing attacks of all weapon types.

Krynn Frigate: designer unknown. It is now known that these were armed at the time with the fearsome anti-matter torpedoes

Against these were ranged the Altarian Mark 8 Cruiser (Designer Dr Munop Hansa/Builder: Mitrosoft Corporation) and the newly built Battle Cruiser (Hansa/Mitrosoft) which could bring to bear 8 Nano-rippers and 6 Banks of PD Combo (that used a combination of ECM to guide the missiles into the path of mini lasers that then destroyed them)

---------------------------------------------------------

Thus ended what many historians since have called the '2 wars in one scenario' in that the Altarian military were using the front against the Terrans to build up enough forces to take on the formidable Krynn Star Navy. They would be much helped in this endeavour by the 2 large Iconian Battleship Fleets that had now arrived at the Krynn held Epsilon IV.

The mood amongs the Altarians could be summed up by the leader in one best-selling E-Journal (The Moon) that said on 8 Nov 2237:

MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT CITIZENS: WAR WITH THE RELIGIOUS ZEALOTS THAT ARE THE KRYNN IS COMING-WE SAY: BRING IT ON!

From the Office of Star Senator Fralla Mento’op

My dearest Sanda

I can only apologise for the length of time that this letter has taken to reach you and use the sorry excuse that these are testing times for all of us. In the 17 months since I have seen you much has happened and I am truly thankful that you are still whole and well and in good hands on that ship. It is now one of the most famous in our Star Navy’s history you will be surprised to note-your battle at the Crystal Nebulae has gone down in lore and is recounted in every social gathering all across our planets.

I wonder what it can be like serving under Commander Thom? But more to the point what of his 1st Officers? You and your opposite number, Per Thuisi, have been cited for commendations but I am sure that you are already aware of this. For now I hear you say, back to the matters at hand, in that bossy way you always used to when we were kids-ah I miss those simple times Sanda-everything is so complicated now.

Storm clouds are gathering my old friend and you are heading straight into them I fear: you and I both know that the Terran Alliance is finished and that the coming war with the Jihadi Fleets of the Krynn will offer you a far sterner test. I am sure you know of the fearsome Battleships that they possess: apparently they have no fewer than 10 of them scattered amongst their systems down there. I know that Thom has already been appraised by Fleet Command Intel of the frightening Anti-Matter Torpedoes that they use as well as the massive armour and multiple PD Combo banks. I worry Sanda-I really do.

Still all is not doom and gloom: we have despatched, with all haste, 3 of our brand new Battle Cruisers: one has been built in our very own Stardock at Caesar III-they are things of wonder, awe and majesty, Sanda: 4 times the crew compliment and over twice the size of the Mark 8; we hope that they will be more than a match for the Krynn. I am sure that you have been told by your Commander of his impending promotion: A Sub-Admiral no less! He will take command of the small fleet of Battle Cruisers and merge it with your own Cruisers. Who knows Sanda there will be a requirement for a Commander for that famous ship of yours eh? I can say no more but both you and your friend and rival Thuisi will, I think, be best pleased at the forthcoming arrangements…..

Talking of rivals I can also tell you in confidence of the Fleet’s plans for Vice Commander Sirita Muun and her depleted Cruiser Fleet (what was it 4 ships left at the last count?). Between you and I, Sanda (and I know that you will say nothing of this), she is being ordered to make for the last 2 Terran worlds in this sector in the Banfield system: a Terran Battleship Fleet has been sighted thereabouts and must be destroyed. There will be no promotion for that one my old friend: it is possibly a suicide mission-she has few friends in the Navy and has made many enemies with her implacable hatred of your own heroic leader.

Listen to me Sanda-anyone would think that I, too, have fallen for the cult of Thom-haha! Just like some Decian Novice eh? No but his flame shines strong and yours too as you stand in his aura and light-reflected glory Benis Mue would say.

You ask me of our leader? What can I say Sanda? He is the most amazing man I know: even more so than our own inspiring Planetary Senior Senator. You know that he asked me to a private council after our recent Star Federation Senate meeting on Decius III. The President told me that he thought that I was one of the most promising young Senators of the party and do you know what he did? He only asked me to accompany him to the United Planets meeting convening just before the New Year! I couldn’t believe it-at first my legs went weak-yes really Sanda! Me? I am Caesar III’s Junior Senator for Saraha’s sake! Anyway once I had recovered myself I accepted of course and found out later that it was my esteemed colleague, the Senior Senator himself, who had put me forward for the post-amazing!

And what an event it was Sanda: held on the neutral world of Mylos I, deep in Torian space it was amazing to mingle with the diplomats and leaders of all those Star Races and even more amazing to watch the cut and thrust in the UP Main Building’s debating chamber. A truly awesome spectacle fitting for the occasion. Gods I am going on-a bit like you Sanda-forgive me. Suffice to say that the Altarian Republic is now 2nd only to the Thalans for the number of votes it can bring to bear at the UP and guess what the motion that was being debated concerned? It was whether to raise the amount of money brought in by tourism by a whole 10%!! Can you believe that Sanda? Well as you can imagine us and the Thalans whose combined votes outnumber the other 5 Star races together promptly voted with the motion and it was duly passed. Brilliant Sanda-you should have seen the grin on The President's face. The smile became rather more fixed, I have to say, when we found ourselves sharing a Shuttle to the Spacedock with the Terran delegation…it was a very uncomfortable few minutes I can tell you-the only saving grace being that the embattled Terran Leader himself was not there. A most unsettling moment Sanda: it gives none of us any pleasure to be destroying a race with whom we share so much. I am almost certain that some poor UP official’s head has rolled for that balls up!

Anyway that is my news my darling friend. There is not a day that passes that I do not pray to the Gods for your safe return to us: oh I know you are too busy covering yourself with glory to think about a swift return but I hope, at least, that it will not be another 17 months before we converse again.

You are in my heart always Sanda-may Saraha keep you

Your best friend
