Gamespot: Editor's Choice Award!

Sins gets an astounding 9.0 at Gamespot

Gamespot has weighed in on Sins of a Solar Empire. Reviewed by Jason Ocampo, one of the strategy genre's top reviewers as well as an expert in other genres, his review thoroughly walked through both the strengths of the game as well as elements of the game that gamers should be aware of (i.e. this ain't no 25 minute action RTS). You can see his other reviews here.

Bah, he rated both Crysis and World in Conflict as 9.5's.

I say we egg his car :)

That was one of the best reviews of SoaSE. From his review I would have guessed a score of 9.2 - 9.5, but were just quibbling at that point. I agree with Frogboy, Ocampo is an excellent reviewer of strategy games.

it should be a 9.8 ... I mean the only problem he had with it was the game lasted too long? WTF kind of issue is that? I mean would you rather have a 12 hour game? This should have been a plus not a negative mark....and losing sleep I can understand ... I mean I was once up till 5 AM playing and I had a 9:30 quantum mechanics lecture .... and I played the game during lecture too .... this game will take over your life ...

A good gamespot rating? How much did that cost?

LOL
I doubt stardock paid for it

Seems to be that every reviewer has complained about the lack of a single player campaign. I'd agree to the point where a multiplayer game is not the only thing that makes a game an instant success... but I also think that a boring campaign could transform a great title to "only good ideas"

BTW, congratulations to the team.

i think the game deserves it, but I'd have liked to see a higher score though.

Did that help fill the void that is your life?

Congraduations IC for making such a wonderful game, and getting the attention you deserve.

if you think this games deserves a 9.8 you ahve your head up your ass...

A gamespot review shouldn't have been publicized, even a positive one. The company's crooked, and deserves to be shunned until it goes down in flames to serve as an object lesson to other game review companies.

A lot of uppity folks here...

Wonder why everyone is so easily ticked off.

Anyway, congrats. Gamespot is pretty notorious for its generosity, but seeing as you guys didn't pay for it, it just means it's all the more better.

yeah, gamespot took a lot of hits in the last weeks, so its by far not my first check for reviews anymore. that said, I think the review was informative, accurate and well written, so in spite of the source, I still give it some weight. but they should REALLY start to repair their tattered image. so far I have heard of little that would suggest a true commitment to independent, neutral reviews to calm the unrests.

I agree with the campaign thing though. I absolutely love games with a good campaign. or rather, games with missions that are fun enough to transpot a great story. a campaign has effectively two objectives: one, get the story across and set people up to get immersion while gaming. I dare say I would have enjoyed starcraft a lot less without campaign. two, introduce players to elements of the game, things more complex than tutorial stuff (although the first missions of campaigns are effectively tutorials).

Odd... they're notorious for precisely the opposite reason on most other game forums I've dealt with. Given that they rate, more often than not, in the same ballpark as nearly everyone else in the industry (I read them because they tend to be on the harsher side of things when I'm looking for reviews), I still have trouble seeing where all the hatred stems from.

In any case, an excellent score for an excellent game but since it's apparently cool to say these days... "Who cares. Game$pot is teh biased anyway."

I'm not a fan of Game$pot either, but a 9.0 means a higher average for metacritic, which is at 8.7/10 for SoaSE right now. Kudo's to Ironclad and Stardock, they might break 9.0 after a few more 9's get counted. I do think 9.0 is fair, I think with better 3d modeling on the ships, and more of a directed campaign mode it could've gone higher.

Good review. Good score. Not a surprise anyway. :)

I'll be looking forward for the single-player campaign in the expansion, which has everything to be awesome.

:CONGRAT:

Grats to Ironclad and Stardock! A well deserved Editor's Choice Award.

gratz for this and the almost certain 'strategy game of the year' award from PC Gamer's '08 list :D *makes wagers on the precise rating %, to be paid in credits of course*
i would guess pc gamer gives you at least a 93%

See, you don't HAVE to run hundred-thousand-dollar ad campaigns on Gamespot to get a great score! All you've gotta do is make a great game! Apparently Ironclad and Stardock know how to do that. Give some classes, guys.

Good review, I've always enjoyed Ocampo's work. Hopefully I'll be able to read him again on a different site someday.

fascinating to me. maybe they are trying to rebuild thier reputation.

Sakhari: The hatred comes from typical blind fanboyism not getting what they want. You know, PS3 owners complaining why Resistance didn't get a perfect score. Or Xbox owners complaining why Halo 3 didn't get a perfect score. Or Wii owners complaining why Twilight Princess didn't get a perfect score.

It just so happened that the scapegoat for their hate was Gamespot. Which just coincidently followed with that Gerstmanngate issue.

Well, that's my take on it.

To the person who said this game didn't deserve a 9.8 ..... the scores should reflect games in that category ... i can't seem to think of a better space rts game ... if you guys know one then i'd love to hear about it so I can go try it out.
