So How Did Your Anti-Virus Perform...............

I use AVG. Looks like it did pretty good and it's free! Can't complain about that. I haven't had a single problem with it but having said that if you don't practice safe surf it doesn't matter what you use!

Same here. AVG works flawlessly, is free and has a small footprint.

I'll toss in I use Norton, is $$$, has a large footprint and it works a little better than AVG. ;p 

I use AVG Internet Security -- costs money (but not too much -- it's definitely cheaper than Norton, and without any of Norton's irritating quirks or it's performance hit), and it's an integrated solution that works much bettr than even the free version of AVG -- or, IMHO, Norton.

0.2% according to the test  ;)

Don't know if I can agree with that. It performs at the top, lowest ranking in any category is good and does excellent in a number of categories including fending off root kits. It's big drawbacks in my opinion from 3.5 years of experience with 2005, 2006, 2007, and now 2008 are: big footprint, active antivirus has to be shutdown to play some games (performance hit) and it's a b*$&!ch to deinstall and get working again. I would not recommend this product for dialup users. It had a habit of wanting to update itself during MS monthly update cycle. My dialup and system became unusable for hours getting "critical" security updates from both Symantec and MS.

It's big postives, again in my opinion from actual use, is it has performed well in dealing with viruses, trojans, spyware and you name it. One infection from a new outbreak virus and backdoor trojan combo (I forget the name now) which it found and quarantined for me during this entire time. Everything else has not landed on my system. And, of course, I don't install plugins and addons, unless I really want them and I know where they are from.

Yeah it works great if you like a program that will screw up your computer.

BigDogBigFeet ...that's enough to permanently wipe it from any 'to use' list.

Then add the clever way it disabled my BIT Service requiring a re-install of SP2 to get it [MS Updates, etc] going again and I say it's asking for a cattle bolt to the head....;)

Norton is the worst. The last halfway decent version was NIS 2006. When I tested the latest version i was literally shocked by its bootstomp and its flaws... I literally laughed out loud when I saw the ccapp shutdown error still hasn't been resolved.

The real kicker for NIS 08? it will leave behind running processes after you uninstall it and you need to download a tool to remove it.

Eset NOD32 is amazing. It wont win any beauty pageants, but its tiny footprint and efficiency make it amazing.

I was using AVG but switched to Avast. Fantastic program and it's free.

Seems to catch more than AVG did.

My new PC came with Norton. It was the first thing I uninstalled. Do I need to run that tool and if so where do I get it?

When I ran the tool and rebooted, my troubles were far from over. I immediately received an ominous dialog from MS office telling me that it needed to reconfigure. After waiting about 10 minutes to see the results of this 'reconfiguration,' I rebooted to find everything normal again.

However, the registry key O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe - was still there, so I deleted it with HJT.

Its hard to believe a day would come when a once trusted product like Norton would take on the characteristics of malware and become something that I need to remove with 'a tool.'

I use Kaspersky internet Security 6.0 :HOT:

Kaspersky Internet Security 7 was one of the first packages to run on Vista64, so I bought it, but I planned to switch to NOD32 when that was running on 64bit.

I am glad I didn't make the switch, as NOD's firewall performed really badly in the last test, and now it seems that it has lost its edge in the Antivirus-sector as well.

Yep, aufisch. I agree. I was really shocked when I saw ESET's firewall results. I was going to change to the ESET Security Suite when my current software expires in a few weeks but now I've got to think again. Kaspersky is good at what it does but it tends to be quite 'heavy'. I am not thrilled by Bitdefender, AVG or some of the free offerings so I am hoping ESET get their act together soon   

Just my opinion, and I have said it on other posts. Tests are nice, but how does it perform on your computer? Really, that is the only test that is worth anything. If the software or program you want to try has a trial run it. If it doesn't work as you like, you try another.

The tests that people talk about here are good for helping you find a program. You may wind up running the one the finnished third because it worked on your machine and first and second place didn't.

Just a thought.  

Oh here we go again. It has yet to screw up my computer... it works great...I have yet to get a virus...and it doesn't slow me down one bit.

If it screwed up your pc....bummer...then don't use it....but there are tons of people that use it just fine.

Yep I have had Norton for two years never had a problem with it and it does not slow down my computer

I used Norton long time ago and didn't liked it, i'd even should say i hated it. Yes it did a good job on my pc but performances argh, i couldn't even open a word files with it running without have a CPU at 100%
(with a P4 2.53ghz and 768mb of ram)
AVG does the job and let me work on my pc at least lol
