Map Downloading

I noticed I cant host maps I make with Galaxy Forge, other players get an error telling them they don't have the map. The map file is all of 5 kilobytes, so it would take less then a second to transfer, and I heard this is going to be implemented in a patch, my question is: Will it be in the first patch?

Reason I ask is because the game has no truly small, quick maps. The smallest two player maps is like 7 planets! The map I made is one planet, one buffer asteroid per player, asteroids all connect to the sun. Even the smallest default map in this game takes over an hour to play as is, so I would really love to be able to upload my custom maps to others with maybe pre-built structures or forces, so we can play faster.

I'd like to see maps stream over ICO too... it also encourages people to make maps and helps the community...

You need to have the other players download your Galaxy Forge creation for it to work. Only maps created with the in-game Map Designer will automatically transfer.

We are planning to do the same for GF maps, but that's not going to happen for awhile yet.

that's not going to happen for awhile yet.

Whys that? Getting random people in ICO to download my custom galaxies is not going to happen, so we are stuck with whats already in the game until this is implemented.

I know I can upload them to the database, I already did that with a few, but telling people in the lobby to go download them and stick them in certain directories before joining...seriously it wont happen.

Because it's not like we can just flip a switch and make it happen. :P

I understand that, but I thought besides bug fixes and balance changes, its something that would be very high on the "to do" list.

Well, GalaxyForge and the in-game map maker have different features. One of the features of GalaxyForge is the ability to make an extremely unbalanced map and dictate where everyone starts, so allowing those maps against random people is maybe not so essential. Just make a map in the in game tool with two planet groups with a planet an asteroid each. Fiddle with the settings until it is how you want it each time and game on.

Yeah you are right about the unbalanced part but I hope thats not the reason its being delayed. A separate game tab for custom maps could be a good solution, so people know what they are getting themselves into before they join, or a way to see maps before you play, but that would require more because it currently does not work like that.

My problem with it is like this, map designer for 6 players, 20-22 planets minimum, map I want to play with 6 players, about 12 planets. I designed a map this small and I think it works good. It limits you on research but focuses on battles. It is called "Second Engagement" ("Engagement" as well, 4 players) and I uploaded it to the map database, but I dont know anyone who plays sins, and I cannot convince random people to go download stuff.

The Map Generator wont let me makes maps like this. It generates fairly large maps. Most of the time I cant play these big maps because they are going to take 2-4 hours to complete. I just played a match of Razors Edge, 4 players, 20 planets...took 3 hours. Thats simply too long in a lot of scenarios where I just want to play a quick match with more then 1 or 2 other people.

They are working on options for a quicker game, but right now they take time. Talk to people in IRC and see if they are willing to play with you and DL your map. Be patient because really you have no other choice.

I can understand that this has to wait! I'm glad they will work on it eventually. There are other things feel are more important, like ability to join game in progress, and have AI take over after a person leaves :)

I can't wait for this... I made a couple of maps today, and sadly I found out that I can't really use them online yet. :(

Hopefully more people visit the map site, and downloads some of the creations out there. :)

I agree with the poster. We need transfer of Maps via ICO. Great game and great Devs!
