Reading entity file question

Ok, so I downloaded Silents gamplay mod and was looking to mod a bit myself. But whenever i go to open up any files related to this game, i get a bunch of those weird rectangles and all the text is jumbled (both wordpad and notepad altho notepad isnt as bad). I was wonder if maybe I messed something up or is my system just not readin these right?

The files are in binary. Ironclad will release a mod suite soon along with tutorials on using it ;)
