As thrilled as I am for the game....

Looking to create a team for a unique mod.

As thrilled as I am for the game, the story seems a bit unappealing to me. I don't mean to disrespect the dev and the creative writers for the effort they have done. It is just that some people will not find the story very appealing. Example, I for one do not like Star Trek: Enterprise, but some others probably do. It is just a matter of taste. But the game itself and how it plays is very good judging from the Beta alone.

I guess thats where modding will come into play. What I want to do is create a mod with a unique Space Opera story. Instead of the 3 various Races, I would like to see one Race. The Human race, but divided into different factions and nations. Something similar to Europe during the 1600s but in space.

Now, I have not created any mods and nor am I a coder. But I have, somewhat, a creative mind and imagination. I would like to put together a team, who at their spare time, can create an alternate story to SINS. Let me know if this sounds interesting to you.

i thought this game had no singleplayer campain mode so does it realy have much of a story?

i dont think this game is about following a story its kind of like making your own :)

do you intend to make your own campain mode?

I thought it had a single player campagin that sort of followed after the story in the lore section.

The answer is yes. You can customize all your races and new ones.

well technically the vasari are human, just that the TEC decided to exile them to outer space and now they want revenge

Thats the Advent.. the Vasari are aliens.. that are running away from something of their own creation apparently.

No need for a single player campaign. I just want to re-create the lore of the current one. Instead of Vasari, TEC, and Advent, I want to do something like a few Noble House, a rebel group, and say another group. All humans.

I want to put together a team that can create a new lore, maybe even new starship design if we can get a few talents in that department.

So anyone interested in joining a team with this goal in mind? The example I have above is just an example.

Achillus you may visit Dawn of Victory mod. They based they mod on a novel which deals with alternative history. It says that the WW2 has ended in 1943 not because one side defeated another but because aliens invaded Earth and humans (yes including Nazies) united to drive them off planet. In a process of doing it they captured alien technology and they were able to reach the stars. 100 years after alien defeat the known galaxy is colonized and shared between 4 human factions among whihc you can find USSR, Nazi Germany, USA+UK and a fourth faction.

Go check them.

I like the story (as read from the Lore page) simply for the fact that if they make a Sins 2, they can have a horror angle like in Homeworld: Cataclysm had. I don't know about the rest of you but i got some shivers down my spine from that game (not crap my pants like in AvP 1 as a marine).

The idea of being able to easily create your own story sounds great. A meta campaign scripting system would have been nice, but I know I always end up in scurmish and multiplayer.

Very few games have engaging stories that are worth playing through. Playability is all that matters, even more so in RTS's.

That sounds like an interesting story. I mean the Dawn of Victory lore. I'm gonna have to look into that. Thanks.
btw, what is the website for that mod?
The lore is there to give you a backstory of each faction leading up to the point to where you start to play. There is no story mode campaign. It is all sandbox. You make up events as you play.

There are several mod teams forming so please feel free to get involved. Any serious offers of help are always well received or if you are a good organizer then start your own. Good ideas always attract a following.

I'm not quite sure how practical it is, but if you're looking for inspiration then might I suggest Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica?

I think a problem I have with a lot of Sci-Fi series is the way they're franchised. You have story arcs, followed by fillers, followed by the season finalle which inevitably culminates in a cliff hangar ending to keep the viewer watching... and repeat!

What really grabbed me about the 'Stories' above is that they are just that: Stories.
All right! So they're presented in a series format, but the new version of Battlestar Galactica in particular caught my eye. If you don't know the general gist (and where have you been the last few decades?) the Human civilization was founded on the planet of Kobol under a pantheon of Gods which very much resemble those in our own Greek Mythology.

Though in time a great cataclysm befell the planet stemming from the Human's own destructive ignorance, and were forced to flee their home as it became awash in fire! From there they took to the stars, forming the 12 colonies, one named after each sign of the Zodiac to represent each God.

Years and years down the line the civilization flourished, technology leading the way and finally to the creation of true A.I. - The Cylons

Originally they were meant to make lives easier on the billions of humans in the colonies, and as research advanced newer and newer models were created, finally with true sentience! If very logical and calculating.

As the old chestnut goes, they revolted. Being computer experts in their own right, the Cylons developed methods for infiltrating any networked computer system and shutting it down, thus most current ships of the time were rendered defenceless nigh instantly. The Battlestars were developed as a means to counter the Cylon threat, huge Warships capable of carrying a full squadron of the highly maneuverable space fighter; the Viper MK.2. Not only that, (and this is from the new series, remember) laser technology is practically none existant. Instead, the Battlestars are capable of launching a huge flack and ballistic screen, along with nuclear tipped missiles.

And why weren't they shut down? Simply because they had a large crew and no networked computers to speak of, so most complex equations and data transfers had to be done manually.

In the 100 years of war that followed, a truce was finally brokered with the Cylons leaving the Star Systems to find a planet of their own. However, they never forgave the ones they regard as their 'parents'.

Fourty years down the line they stage a huge assault, and thanks to a new model of Cylon, one outwardly undetectable from humans and with the emotional difficulties that comes with (12 human models in total, along with countless copies of each type) they infiltrated the Human defence systems and shut them down totally. The colonies were left wide open to an apocalyptic nuclear assault!

On this very same day the Battlestar Galactica was undergoing its decommissioning ceremony into a relic museum of the 40 years war, complete with a full squadron of the old MK.2s. Initially, it alone is the only apparent survivor due to its immunity to the crippling computer virus, owing to its lack of upgrades unlike the modern Battlestars and Viper MK.7 figthers, all of which were left defenceless hulks of metal floating in space.

Or, the only survivor along with a fleet of civilian ships left floating in space when the attack started. Their only option is to run, their only shelter the fabled 13th colony of legend: Earth.

Phew! All right, with that back story out of the way... Yes, I know I've just really taken my time over that, but there's a reason!

This is a very grim universe, literally the possible extinction of the human race. They only have the supplies they started out with, limited ammunition reserves (but it will take quite a while to burn through, I should think...) water, food, medicine and everything else! The point being, they have to somehow elude their Cylon persuers, scavenge what little resources they can (Such as Asteroids for specific gaseous compounds that can be used as fuel, planets and meteorites for water, etc...)

Now is it just me, or can this be adapted to become the player's choice? Yes, I know it moves outside the lore of the series... but perhaps other Battlestars survived (As one did, but that's the only spoiler I'm going to type here) which constitute other players. Maybe they banded together, found habitable planets and decided to make a stand against the Cylons?

What I'm trying to say is, if you adapt this sort of story in to a game format, leaving the players free to decide what to do after the colonies are crippled (obviously waving aside breeding times and other such real life fluff). What would you do? Develop Anti-Rad research and wrestle control of your Colonies back? Move on and look for richer grounds?

I'm not saying its the definitive story, I'm just saying it could create a cracking campaign and there are definitely some elements that spring to mind which would work wonders in a deep Sci-Fi mod. And hell, what else would it be with an engine like Sins to work on? :P

We currently have mod teams forming for both of those franchises.

BTW: Nice post you should really consider getting involved in a project.

Heh. Many thanks mate.

In point of fact, I'm applying for a course in Games Design this coming September... A little experience couldn't hurt. I might just do that, so cheers for the heads up!

I'm sorry but that isn't exactly true about the new battlestar. All we know is that there was 13 colonies and the link with the 13th colony was severed long time ago. Some called it Earth among 12 other colonies comes call it a legend but none knows for sure. Should you have watched Razor episode you would have heared the first humanlike cyclon telling that Starbuck will lead survivors to the path of the destruction. For all we know Starbuck didn't even find Earth. But the mystery will be revealed in April 2008 for over atlantic funs.

Hello everyone, this is my first post on these boards yay!

I have to be honest, I had not heard of this game until I seen the preview on CVG and well, I shall be getting pre-ordered when I get home! I seem to have some sort of fascination for Space Battles, loved Homeworld!

Anyway, the stories above look ace! Espec the Battlestar one, but, if you were looking for inspiration then look at the Warhammer 40k Universe. They have a tabletop game called Battlefleet Gothic that would fit the bill for this!  :)

Welcome to the community. You should checkout out BFG & DoW project threads as well as the BSG one and if you are interested in getting into modding just let us know what you want to do and I'm sure you will find a home quickly.

Thanks! It's certainly something I would be interested in getting into! I work in IT so I should really be able to get into it quite quickly but never doing it before, kinda scares me  (:(

Can't wait to play this game!!!!

As great as a franchise Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, and Star Trek are, I would prefer something more original. Although Firefly would make a good mod as well. I'll be putting up a lore for my idea soon.

We'll, lets see where things lead from here.

IMHO you should make your own races without any connection to existing shows or you will have ppl compalaining how this unit isn't stronger that other.

However Farscape was really an original show regarding races.
