Why Should I (You) Join An Empire?

A Look At Metaverse Empires

You ever get one of those emails saying this empire has invited you to join? Or wonder why players announce their affiliation with a flashy signature line? Or maybe you just like being part of something bigger. No matter the reason that you have looked into, wondered about, or talked about joining an empire in the past, we will look at the misconceptions, the benefits, and the actions of being in a Metaverse Empire.

Well, to start we need to define what a Metaverse Empire is. An empire is a group of players, whether it be one or a thousand, that have chosen a particular affiliation, whose scores are added together to calculate a total score on the ranking board. Any player may create or join an empire. An empire with more players has a stronger ability of posting more scores to the Metaverse and thus, more quickly ascend the ranking board.

So the biggest empire is always the highest on the board then? No, that is a misconception. The Metaverse Ranking Board calculates the total scores of all the members of an empire to give them their position. While the largest empire has the ability to post more scores, a smaller empire with a few individuals that post very high scores frequently can actually be the leader on the ranking board. Note that key words here are Ability and Score. A thousand players in the same empire but only having one person submit a game to the Metaverse is not using its full potential of its Ability. Likewise, if everyone in the empire submitted one game, they will rise faster due to the additive effects of their score over a smaller empire.

Let’s take a look at a sample of selected empires. The largest empire by members, the Kzinti Empire, as of today has 239 members with a score 6,667,282. But even with the most members, they rank #4 on the MV Board. The smallest empire in the Top 10 is the Gerontocracy with 24 members but with a score of 1,560,739. My own empire only has three active players and has a ranking of #19.

Many empires are built around a particular fandom or issue. The Gerontocracy reaches out specifically to older players of Galactic Civilizations. The Tyranny of Evil celebrates the playing as Evil (or as evilly good) in one’s game. The Galactic Diplomats, arguably the most influential of all Metaverse Empires, have many members that have taken the time to really break down the game mechanics for players. The Kzinti Empire is based upon a race from a series of novels, comics, and television shows such as Star Trek: The Animated Series. The MV League Empire is made up of players that play games solely for the Metaverse League competition.

These differences in the core setup allows for a wide variety of empires for a player to look and choose from. Not all empires however are open to all players. An empire can be open (anyone can join), closed (no one can join), moderated (anyone can join but must be approved by the emperor or a senator), or by invite only.

Each empire is operated and handled differently depending on its core members, its emperor (the originator of the empire), and its goals. Some empires make every member that joins a Senator. A Senator is a position that can be given to a member of an empire that allows that player to accept players on the behalf of a moderated empire or send out invites to other players to join. The Senator position also receives a prominent spot on the empire profile page showing their character, games played, and score. Other empires, like mine, only give out Senatorial positions to those that have achieved certain criteria.

So why do people join an empire? The most common reason is the camaraderie gained by being able to talk to a group of individuals about the game, life, and even other various non-game related topics. Many empires have their own threads and a few even have their own private forums for discussion, game help, quizzes, and other miscellanea. Another prominent reason is the pleasure that is gotten from being on top of the ranking board.

The best reason to give to a player that wants to join an empire is that the player will get so much more out of his/her game when they have a fellow player to show it off to. We are social creatures and while Galactic Civilizations II is not a multiplayer game, empires give us a chance to compete, socialize, and learn in ways that we couldn’t do on our own in this game.

For those that may wish to check out some empires, I have included at the bottom of the page links to each of the Top 10 empires thread, if they have one. In all fairness I must state that some of the empires listed below are considered to be ‘inactive’ empires.

First Place Kzinti Empire

Second Place Tyranny of Evil

Third Place The Galactic Diplomats

Fourth Plac Galactic Stargate Command

Fifth Place High Command Hegemony

Sixth Place B.C. Space Orcas

Seventh Place The Gerontocracy

Eighth Place The Olympian Gods

Ninth Place The Overmind

Tenth Place The Browncaots

Haven't included the Hitchhikers, eh? I'll have you know that they were once on the #8 spot.

I only included those that are currently in the Top 10. I have tried to stop by active empire threads to let them post a "recruiting" poster here. The Qourth Empire, at #9, does not have a thread or website and thus why it doesn't have a link.

I am near the bottom but active. Only just got the game and i am currently awaiting TA's release to start playing Metaverse games. However as a one-man band i would love some assistance to see how far up the league we can get  :D

BTW i just released two mods (awaiting clearance) for the empire which include a Megatron race image along with its trade version and the Decepticons logo!

Excellent write up mate!!

The Tyranny of Evil is one of the empires mentioned that has clawed it's way up to 5th in the MV rankings by having a small active player base. In fact along with the diplos i'd say the ToE is 1 of the two most active empires in the community. When i say active i don't just mean submitting games, but also contributing to the forum discussion or community driven projects like the Metaverse League.

It is high time that the top of the MV rankings actually showed the top 3 empires. The HCH and the B.C Space Orcas are resting on the achievements of past members, where the ToE has come from obscurity to challenge these long dead monoliths....

Should anyone reading this feel the need to take on the challenge of helping to bring the Tyranny of Evil to the forefront of the MV please do not hesitate to join our ranks. You can join here. Join the Tyanny of Evil!! We would love to see you on our own forums,
Tyranny of Evil Forums and help you in your quest for complete domination!!!

It has been only been 19 octals of days (5 months) since the Kzinti arrived in this galaxy. Our rise to dominance has been swift and relentless, as is our destiny. While the warlords of the other empires grow fat and lazy on the spoils of their long-gone victories, the Kzinti hunger for conquest is insatiable! Every day more planetary systems fall to our Heroic t'kzintar, and warriors from the old and dying empires join us in our quest for the subjugation of the galaxy. Those who resist will find the jaws of the Kzinti at their throats!

kzin6

Those who possess the heart of a true Hero, are welcome to join with our t'kzintar warriors! It is our destiny to bring the natural order of Kzinti domination to the rest of the galaxy, as has been ordained by the Fanged God. We will feed upon the flesh of those enemies who fight with honor and bravery, and leave the bones of the cowardly grass-eaters to bleach in the sun. Will you join us, or become our prey?

The Kzinti Empire is the most active and fastest-growing empire on the Metaverse. Soon we will overtake the Orcas in the number three rank! We have more members than any other empire, because we welcome everyone, whether complete beginner or elite player. We also are one of the most stable empires, with no "splintering" effect of people leaving the Empire. If you love to play the game, and want to join an active empire that is clawing its way to #1 then the Kzinti will welcome you!  :D

Much appreciate the info about this thread. The Arrakis Imperium was once among the top 10 and I'm sure we will reclaim our place on the galactic map. We are a themed empire focusing upon Dune fiction. I myself have read all the Dune novels both the prequels and the final 2 chapters. All members are welcome but onlt Dune characters or spinoffs there of can be senators. Right now just a few of us are active but new members are certainly welcome.

Why should you be a Galactic Diplomat?

First, we are an open empire and all are welcome. We have a private forum over on The Galactic Core. We play for fun. In fact, if you are NOT having fun, we will encourage you to take a break and go do something else. If you come back to the game, that's great, if not, that is fine too. Either way, you will be welcome to come hang out with us any time you feel like it. Some of our most valued members don't really ever post games, but just hang out and provide good conversation mostly in the public forums. We don't believe scoring is the be all and end all of whether a player is valuable. Newbies are equally welcome! We believe camaraderie is the heart of our empire. We also believe that a healthy Metaverse is to the benefit of us all.

If you are looking for game or gaming scoring help, we have a large pool containing many of the most accomplished players that GC II has ever seen. However, we generally provide that help to anyone who asks, member or not.

Then there is the thing that made the difference for me when I joined. I used to be a member of the Overmind empire. It made it all the way to the top back in the early days when no one knew who I was. Then it died because there was no other reason for its existence. I wanted an empire that would really be around. The Galactic Diplomats were founded by a bunch of old GC I players in the early days of GC II. It had survived longer than any other empire, even at that point. It was already the empire that just never died. It seemed to have what it takes to be around for the long haul, and seemed to have people who where fun to hang out with.

Since that day, the GDs have reclaimed the top spot three times after losing it to the Overmind, the BC Space Orcas, and the HCH. Will we always be number one? Probably not. Will we always reclaim it? Maybe, maybe not. We there be GDs sitting around discussing the fine points of the entropic death of the GC II universe with a virtual beer in their hands and hot words, all in good jest, whenever it eventually happens? Of that I am sure.

I am a former member of the HCH and a current member of the Galactic Diplomats. Based on my personal experience, I can recommend the Galactic Diplomats, The Tyranny of Evil and the Kzinti Empire as a good place for any player to make new friends and expand his/her enjoyment of playing GalCivII. You can't go wrong with any of them, they are newbie and oldbie friendly

Nice speech Purge!!!

It is great to see that the Diplo's have been able to weather the storm of the various contendors for their crown.....speaks volumes of the members i think. It is also great to have the Tyranny of Evil and The Kzinti Empire rise up and take the place...ever so slowly mind you, of the Orcas and the HCH.

I hope the demise of two of the biggest empires does not give SD reason to think the MV has lost it's appeal. Some of the most active members of the community can be found in one of the three already mentioned empires.

Here's to seeing the Galactic Diplomat's, Kzinti Empire and Tyranny of Evil all make it through to being the founding Empires of the GalCiv3 Metaverse!!!!!

A healthy Metaverse absolutely needs healthy empires. And as I believe I have seen Mumblefratz write, we have far more in common as Metaverse players than we have differences! It is nice that things have moved down the road of friendly competition, something that is often not true of these kinds of things.

Now who can't cheer that!?! :)

BTW And a thanks to Silverbeacher for starting this thread up. It's a good way for some of the smaller empires to put in their two cents as well and get some exposure. It's tough to get an empire rolling and kudos go to all those trying to get one going.

Puppeteers again! We must find their homeworlds and lay waste to them. If only those cowardly herd-beasts would stop moving their planetary systems around, grrrrr....

Having a number of vigorous empires is definitely a boon for the Metaverse. It makes it much more interesting to have other empires to interact with. Also its good to have Vukasika of the AI return from the Scattering and activate that empire again.

And Purge is right, having just started one myself its harder than I thought, but I enjoy it nonetheless.

Join the ALLMIGHTY Zegarion Republic, and we will rule the universe!!!
Go to my empire page at this LinkMy empire may not be the best, or the biggest,
may not be in the top ten, or the top 100 for that matter. But I'm determined
to make it there some day. And with your help we can make that dream a reality.

I've been a galciv2 player since 06 and have played many games. The reason
you should join my empire is that in a small empire, you really matter. This
isn't true for the bigger ones. In them your're just one more score. They don't
care if they lose just one player, because they got another hundred. So join
the Zegarion Republic.

But the atlast the old empires of time and evil will pass like all the others have and then the light will shine on the United Confederation of Planets and show that you don't have to be evil to be on top...

For years the Geckodons were a simple minor race of reptilian warriors, but a few months ago we began to dominate the far reaches of space, now we are 12 on the Meta and  3 on the Altmeta.  We are evil and plan on destroy those who stand in are way, ever since we met them we have been arch enemies with the Kzinti,TOE and the Confederation. Do not join the Confederation, they want nothing more than to disband other small empires to add to thier "cotalation". Do no join the Kzinti for they are nothing more than mere cats and the ToE is nothing more than a bunch weird soul sucking things. Join us as we devour our enemies! http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=empire&id=3538, if you have any questions, go to our thread, https://forums.galciv2.com/311488/page/9  Join us or be devoured.
