Change

Another blurb...Thanks, Doc for the idea.

Life is in constant change, a constant flux.  People, other animals, even plants are moving, moving, moving and changing, growing, becoming.

Within our very body chemical reactions go forward and backward continuously.  If they cease, then we die…or rather when we die they cease.  Our very cells travel about our body, some throughout - others in limited space.  Even in these tiny cells pieces are moving all over the place, replicating, transcribing, dividing.

Restless, restless life is.  No staying still, just moving and moving and moving.  Observe the smaller creatures of this world:  so small and so fast, for they live for far less time.  No stopping to smell the roses if you’re a bee, just collect the goods.  Time to work, time to feed, time to contribute to raising the next generation.  Busy as a bee indeed.

For a great example of change, observe metamorphosis.  Egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly- egg, tadpole, polliwog, frog - life hears a call and moves to action.

However, as people most of us have other goals rather than feeding and mating.  Well, most of us do at any rate.  We have much the same capacity for change, though ours being more mental than physical.  Couple decades and you’re all grown up and at least a good 50-60 years ahead of you if you’re lucky.

So when we change, we’d better make damn sure it’s a good one, eh?  How do we do that?  Education, religion, advice, maybe even just experimentation.  Several things exist to help us figure out exactly who we are and who we want to become.

I think that’s the most important part of change: having a goal.  What do you want to be when you grow up?  What is your major going to be in college?  Do you even want to go to college?  What do you want out of life and would you like to share it with anyone?  All those questions and countless others are presented to us each and every day.

Some people hate change, but it happens whether or not you want it to for better or worse.  It’s quite unavoidable.

So, you go about life one way, learn something or see something and you change.  People are very much products of their environment especially as children.  So what shapes you?  Something that already exists, something you find out for yourself, or something you just thought up?

Admittedly it can seem chaotic, but as living things we deal with it most effectively.  For life is a constant state of spontaneous entropy, it’s why it exists in the first place and why it thrives so well in it.

So tell me:  What big changes have you gone through during your life?  Were you even conscious of it or were you just along for the ride?  Or is some big change coming up now?

Stream of consciousness ponderings...fun stuff.

Aside from the obvious (baby to infant to child to teen to adult), I think the biggest change for me was going from the comfort and relative safety of my family environment to having to look after every aspect of my life myself. It is during this period of time I believe we all make changes that define us for the rest of our lives.

Another big change for me was going from being a member of the defence forces to being a civilian. Again, aside from the obvious (uniformity, conformity, control), having to deal with the chaos of normal civilian life was a big change for me.

Ah yes...on the cusp of adulthood and independence...where your character truly develops and you become the person you're most likely to be the rest of your life...barring some unforseen tragic event.

Another big change for me was going from being a member of the defence forces to being a civilian.

Hmm, I can imagine that's pretty hard to do. Structured environment to the comparatively whimsical life that civilians lead...definitely different.

Interesting subject.  I was just thinking the other day of where I was 30 years ago, and where I am now.  A lot of missed opportunities, and paths not imagined then.  NOt a bad trip so far.  I hope I make it another 30, but then we never know.

30 years ago, I was 14. Wow, so much has changed since then. Like Doc said, not a bad trip so far, though.
