Strategies for DA, Playing the Yor

I have never really played much besides the humans, and I really wanted to try somthing diffrent, can someoen make some recomentations to me to help play the Yor? Two things usally happen to me, I overexpand to too many planets and my economy collapses, or I don't expant to enough planets, and I get crushed by the good races who love to declare war on me.

I typically play on a huge map with 7 races plus myself and 2 small races. Any pointers at all would really be apreciated.

The Yor are actually one of the so-called "better" races to begin with as they get a nice balance of abilities and are aided by a miniaturization bonus. Usually, its a good idea to go with some morale bonuses during the set-up screen as this is the main drawback of the Yor. As an added "bonus", when playing with Super Abilites, the Yor SA limits enemy ships to a speed of 3 no matter what and the ability to colonize Barren worlds automatically.

Another nice thing about the Yor are all the starting techs they have. You get Ion Drive (+1 speed), Xeno Economics, and Xeno Industrial Theory; three very good techs to start the game with.

With the colony rush, with any race, try to make some of your worlds solely economic based. I generally make all my Class 10 and under worlds to be econ as they, even if upgraded, won't produce enough manufacturing or research points to be cost effective.

This will just really get you out of the gate. There are guides, AARs, and other threads (specifically, search for threads written by Purge, Mumblefratz, Iztok Bitenc, and Wyndstar) that can help with your overall game technique and strategy.

Best of luck mate!

If the other AIs are declaring war on you, try to start up your military a little earlier. It doesnt take much, just a few ships with some weapons will make a big difference. If you can, try to get the AI's to fight with each other instead of you. Pay someone to go to war. While they squabble amongst themselves, build your economy and some warships.

If you are used to playing Humans then it is possible that you have gone for diplo victories in the past.
I'm playing Yor at the moment (medium galaxy, sparse inhabited planets) and at first I suffered as everyone attacked me due to evil status. So now I tend to follow a very aggressive strategy and it works better.

One approach:
Re your econ, you need to expand no quicker than you can afford.
Re being crushed, make sure you research weapons, soldiering and invasion techs early and build enough shiops to keep AI at bay.
Then look for nice soft targets (eg minor race homeworld, that's ideal)and invade asap.
Focus on invasion, not enemy ship destruction. Build up population of invaded world (use troop transports from your other worlds to build quickly). Move on to next soft target.
If you can research up to getting eg mini-soldiers then great but don't worry even if you have to use v damaging invasion strategy. You will wipe billions of enemy pop out.

To summarise: be aggressive, and invade as soon as you can. It works for me (when playing Yor).
