I'd start with Xion. It's a great place to start (I just started skinning myself). It's easy- no scripting necessary. You'll need a program that can do .psd (Photoshop files). If you don't have the $$ to spend on Photoshop CS3, I'd recommend GIMP. It's set up like PS, except you can't do layer sets (which means no anims for the Xion). Best of all, GIMP is free to dl and use. Read the forums here, on the GIMP site, and on Xion's site. And don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck......

It's amazing how much you can learn over the course of 5 days (which is how long I've been skinning). Since I have PS CS3 and can do anims for Xion I made myself a cool little set of speakers to thump to the music. They go nuts over Faith No More's Midlife Crisis.....
