Why the heck does Dental Novacaine last so long

Alright, alright, alright, I know I don't want the stuff to wear off while the Dentist is in there drilling around and such, but I swear that the Dentists I've been to use far too much Novacaine and that the stuff takes forever to wear off.  Nearly 4 hours later and I'm just now finally getting the feeling back in my mouth.  Ugh.  Enough to do the job and a little more to cover possible distractions is fine, but enough to leave my face number for the rest of the day just sucks.

Novocaine does almost nothing for me.  Sure it deadens the nerve (I had my first teeth filled without it thinking I was alergic to it), but the part that drives me up a wall is the vibration! And novocaine does nothing for that. Unless I am getting a root canal, I just tell them to bag the stuff. I dont need to be biting my tongue for the next 2-4 hours.
