Thanks to an offer from DirecTV, I subscribed to the the Sunday Ticket NFL football package for this season. DirecTV's offer -- and a big part of the reason that I took advantage of it -- included their 'superfan' package for free. Superfan is required if you want to receive the Sunday Ticket games in hi-def, so I consider it a necessity for even considering subscribing to the Sunday Ticket package. Unfortunately, DirecTV considers it a value added service and they typically charge $99 to receive the Superfan option on top of the $249 - $279 price that they charge for a season of Sunday Ticket.
If you aren't lucky enough to get Superfan for free, then you could be looking at paying out over $350 to receive the Sunday Ticket games in hi-def. Ouch. Not cheap at all. Over $20 per week to have access to receive nearly every NFL game no matter what market you are in (*subject to local blackouts in markets with NFL teams that don't sell out their games). In some ways a bargain, in other ways expensive entertainment. All the more irritating because you pay so much for the main product and then have to pay more to get the games in hi-def. Personally, that $99 charge is enough to keep me from subscribing to Superfan and without Superfan, well, I have virtually no reason to subscribe to Sunday Ticket (despite my continued participation in fantasy football leagues and my love of watching NFL games on any given weekend).
What comes close to making the Superfan fee worth the money is the Red Zone channel that DirecTV offers every Sunday during football season. The Red Zone channel is a channel that jumps from game to game through all of the active games, always jumping over to games where teams are ready to score. It sounds hectic and it is a little bit, but it's not as crazy as it sounds. The Red Zone 'team' tells you when they'll be moving between games and gives you plenty of information on what games are showing on what channels so if you start watching the channel, see a game that looks interesting, you can always jump over to the channel for that game and stay parked there if you wish.
Meanwhile, if camp on the Red Zone channel you're never bored. Commercials are virtually never encountered as the times when you might normally encounter commercials instead are filled with the scoring attempts and Red Zone (inside the 20 yard line of the opponent) action from the other games that are going on. So, if you like seeing the scoring attempts and hate the commercials, time out periods, instant reply review periods, and other distractions, camping on the Red Zone channel is just for you.
Personally, I'd be happy to pay for just the Red Zone channel. That $99 fee is just about right for my tastes. I don't need all of the games as the games that my favorite team(s) are playing in are broadcast locally every week. I do, however, love the Red Zone channel and the fact that I can see most of the most important plays from every game just by watching that channel. Unfortunately for me, the $99 fee only applies if you pay the larger fee. Uh oh. That probably won't happen for me next season, so I should probably get my enjoyment of the Red Zone channel in while I can.
