Boot Problems

I have used both bootskin and logonxp for over a year. Recently, I had some minor problems when rebooting but nothing major. Then, yesterday, when starting my computer, it wouldn't even get past the point of Vaio screen to the actual boot screen. I would manually shut off the computer and get to the choices of safe or normal modes. If I tried normal, same result, "Vaio" and stops. So, I finally went into Safe mode and opened the program, and returned to the default, boring boot. Then, it would get to my desktop. BUT, nothing functioned. For example, if I double clicked on Firefox (or any other program, for that matter) I got no response whatsoever. Went back to safe mode and opened logonstudio. Reverted back to the same old boring welcome screen. After the return to both these boring defaults, the computer works as normal.

First, why would this happen after such a long period of time? Second, is there any "fix" for this? I would really love to return to using the terrific bootskins/logons a lot of you create, but have no idea how to fix this situation. I'd hate to have to "bite the bullet" and return to those boring bootscreens/logons. Any help would be appreciated.

Since your computer worked before using both bootskin and logonskins one question comes to mind, did you change anything in your computer settings or such or have you recently downloaded any new programs that might be the problem?

What OS are you running?

When is the last time you ran your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs?

If we are talking about just recently that your computer has been acting up you could try and do a restore to a date that it was working fine.

Philly: No changes and no new programs. I'm using XP. My anti-virus and spyware are through Windows OneCare and are always working in the background. I will try to use a different bootskin to see if the particular one I chose was the cause.

Darn, should of thought about that, but it would be odd, unless the file for the bootskin or logonskin is corroupted to do this to your computer. Stranger things do happen.

Granted that the anti-virus is working in the back ground but when is the last time you did a scan?

One Care does scans all the time. I'll check when the last one was though. Thanks for your help.

That bootskin was a bad one. I've deleted it and used others and no problems. In fact, the logons work now too and I don't have that "non-functional desktop" problem i mentioned above. I'm knocking on wood as I type this.
