d'oh, why did I have to one to be overrun like this? well, still nicely pulled off, I ll remember to keep a permanent scout in the astroid field the next time I play this map.

I do this sometimes too, it's absolutely devastating to the enemy economy to have an embargo equipped carrier in a home planet's orbit. In the beginning of the game, you're effectively doubling your credit income; it even makes killing the enemy's home planet counter productive.
Does embargo steal metal/crystal income too? It doesn't seem like it does, but I can't tell.

meh, try 2x sovan rush 
in FFA i rushed 2 players at once with sovans, got stupid credit income
And no it dont effect the metal/crystal.
The trik is to guess what kind of start the player takes. if he rushes to LRM's, you need fighters. If he got mass mediums, bombers are your wepons of choise.
Also upgrading armor and hull will healp you out allot.
