Give the Gift of Learning for Christmas!

I'm not one for shameless promotions. Gimmicks just don't do it for me. But every once in awhile, there is a project that I can get behind.

My children do not know it yet, but they will be getting a brand new laptop for Christmas. Why such an extravagent gift? Because of what we are really giving.

Beginning on November 12, the One Laptop per Child program will be offering a "Give one, Get one" promotion through their website. Details can be found at: http://www.xogiving.org/ . When  you buy a laptop for $400, you will receive one and another will be sent to a child in a developing nation.

This is the kind of "do it yourself" liberalism that is needed. Instead of appealing to the government to raise taxes and send billions for this project, you can take money from your own pocket to help someone else, someone you've never met.

And I can think of no better gift to give my children than the knowledge that the laptop we're buying to help their education is helping the education of someone not so privileged as to live in a great country such as this!

It's definitely cool, but I can't envision buying something to toy with for 400 bucks, even if one will go out and help a child.

Oh, believe me, my kids won't be "toying" with it. We'll definitely use it regularly in their course of instruction.

I think it's one of the coolest gifts I can get them. They get a brand, spanking new laptop as well as the knowledge that it was helping someone else. Everyone wins!

Have you used one of these?  I've heard good things from the org . .not so much from the real world.

I haven't had the opportunity, zubaz.

I'm sure there will be limitations, but the concept is something I believe we should support. This is something I would like my kids to learn and explore.

When we get ours, I plan to work up a full review for these pages. I wish I was prominent enough in the industry to get an evaluation model, but alas, I remain a guppy in the world of the sockeye salmon...lol!

Let me know the answer to the REAL important question . . can you skin it?

I suppose on THIS site I better answer THAT question before any other...lol!

But, uh, zubaz...open source software is, by its very nature, skinnable!

I think this is great. Lucky kids...yours and the recipients of your generosity elsewhere in the world.
