My CPU fan is killing me...

My CPU fan is killing me...

help...

Is there some kind of software that will let me control my CPU fan going nuts everytime i open a webpage, check my mail, apply a skin etc... Its a fairly l new PC with 2 gigs of ram and 3.4 dual core Intel.

When I bought it a lot of the testemonials mentioned the fan being noisy .. they were right, I wouldnt care if it werent so noisy.

I have changed the bios setting for the fan from constant 3500 rpm ( default ) to ( i forget the setting ) only when it "needs" it. It still starts up anytime I do anything.. I have noticed the cooler I keep my room temperature the less the fan comes on.

Id like to be able to control it via software to only be used so much when rendering or cpu intesive operations.

It's driving me nuts... anyone got any suggestions on software or some other remedy?

You should go ahead and replace the fan if you smoke around you PC. The tar and nicotin leaves a sticky film on the blades that is hard to remove and like a magnet to dust. Buy something like this one for $30.00 WWW Link and it will run silent and cool.

How did you know I had a 775??

and just to make sure... I have a WWW Link can someone with wisdom point me to the EXACT item I would need at the fairest price.. my CPU is a Dualcore 3.4 2G Ram

Why not switch to water cooling?

I'm psychic (or is it psycho…I get confused).
Just make sure whatever you buy, you have enough clearance for it. I'm pretty sure the dimms are close to the CPU on that board which may cause a clearance issue. And, buy some Artic Silver brand thermal compound, it's the best.
Good Luck.

I smoke around my PC, but I clean the fan weekly with a q-tip and a lil bit of windex. works good for getting that crap off the blades.... but then again, my fan doesn't have a broken pin on it, either

Do you have Intel or AMD processor? If it is AMD, you can rule out 775.

If it is Intel, all dual core processors including Pentium D are LGA 775 socket type.

I am not sure what you are asking about that link. I saw a motherboard review. Is that the motherboard you have?

LGA 775 socket type. and yes thats my board.. looking for someone educated in "this" to find me a deal on something worthwhile.

Based on the spec, the only dual core processor supported by that motherboard is Pentium D. That dual core is notorious for running very hot. I have one, a Pentium D 950. The fan I use on this one is here WWW Link and looks like it is on sale now. When I purchased from Fry's electronics more than a year ago, I paid almost double that. I am not sure if you are willing to pay that much just for a fan but this one keeps that monster toaster in check.

This is how the fan looks inside my PC. It is a Linux Server.

Yeah I have a Pentium D 3.4G

Thanks for the link, I guess it woudld be wise to go ahead and reaplce this one I broke.. hopefully a better quality one will have stonger connections.. lord knows it took NOTHING to break this intel one.

Question tho... My fan is making zero noise now and my temp is staying under 50C, Do i even need it?
As long as it runs at 50c or below, you should be fine on temp. I read that you broke a retaining pin off...as long as the other 3 are holding tightly, you will probably be ok. Make sure to use speedfan, Everest, or Smart Guardian to keep an eye on your temps until you feel ok with it.

What would one use if the PC is a small form factor setup with a P4 2.4 GHz?

50c is really cool for that CPU! I see that CarGuy1 already replied.

2.4GHz P4's should not get that hot and they may not need those extra cooling.

Well if I knew you were looking for a fan - I have one here - it is a Binford 9000 - runs for about 3 hours on a tank of gas and there is a complimentary blast shield that is included.

here's another site, john. i deal with them a lot. since you're in florida, you may get cheaper shipping costs, too. i put the arctic cooling freezer 7 pro on lots of machines for customers and have never had a complaint or problem with any of them. personally, i use thermalright heatsinks but the ac units are very good.

I run an AMD Athlon 3200 with 2GB of ram and a Thermaltake Volcano 12 heatsink and fan.
Probably one of the noisiest out there, I'm told it sounds like a helicopter in the room. When you get my age you have the ultimate answer to heatsink fan noise....going deaf.

I have a 40 GB Samsung hard drive that would give any CPU fan a run for it's money for noise...
