Twilight of the Arnor campaign

It's going to be fun!

I just finished finalizing the story for Twilight of the Arnor.  While Dread Lords and Dark Avatar were interesting in their own ways, I think that this campaign will be the most fun and interesting of them all. Players will really get to learn about the Precursors and there will be a LOT of Dread Lord action in this. There are entire missions where it's just you vs. Dread Lords. It's no holds barred.

One interesting mechanic will be the addition of the new Immense sized galaxy which one of the campaign missions makes use of.  With 400+ sectors in a given map, there will be plenty of action.

All players of GalCiv will also benefit from Twilight of the Arnor since we'll have to optimize a lot of code in order to make possible some of the things in Twilight.  And some of those optimizations will be made available throughout all versions.

Hopefully people will like what we're doing with Twilight. It's going to play a lot differently in the campaign than the previous ones.

I thought the Dreads had been beaten by the Terran-lead coalition in GC2:DL. Unless this campaign is out of order and your playing as the Arnor back in that epic war which lead to the disappearance of the Precursors.

Would you get to keep the tech you gained from mission to mission, or does it revert back to the beginning in every mission?

Immense galaxy? Something tells me this campaign will take a LOT of time.

I don't really play the campaigns because you always have to be on one side. Whether it be good or bad. (Like on Medal of Honor, you always have to be the American. Did anyone think about the German's feelings?) After all, why did we have to be the Drengins in DA when we fought them in DL? The storyline seems inconsistent in my opinion. It would be better if we had a parallel universe where we could play the campaign where the other side won in DL.

must admit i haven't finished one either...i've always kinda hated the 'start again' approach to each mission, rather prefering a 'moving forward with what you've got' approach...if you made a campaign that starts with a tiny corner of an immense map, moving the player though the various map sizes (tiny > small > medium etc) with a combination of specific targets and mega events forcing you through the epic story, i'd be there.

The one, big problem with "take the techs with you" in campaigns is that it could be easily abused by researching everything just to have it in the next scenario. The only alternative that I see, putting serious limits to the tech tree of each mission, isn't that appealing either. I'd like to add that the "research all over again" thing was better in DA than DL because you started further up the tree in each mission.

This problem can be solved easily. Just put a research points limit on each mission. That way people will be able to research anything they want within that RP limit, carry it over to the next mission and not have to start all over again. Simple as that.

Or simply incorporate higher tech developments into the storyline, like Empire Earth, etc. The early campaigns you can only research/build/upgrade X number of units, as the campaign progresses, you unlock more and more.

I'd personally love to see a campaign that revolved around selective expansion and shrinking of the current playing field. For instance, the first "mission" could be a small map that's played in a relatively sandbox way, with some sort of mission objective being central to progression (claim x planets, defeat x enemy in this sector, etc). Once it's done, the map extends in a new direction, a new objective is given, and the story is furthered. The campaigns would probably be made shorter by this, but it would be very cool.

I love the story and writing of GalCiv, but the campaigns are tough to play through in most cases. I too dislike having to start from scratch every time.

PeskyFly, the Dread Lords weren't beat, they just 'withdrew'... haven't you played the DA campaign, or heard of it, where the Korath and DLs join together?

Haven't you ever used, or at least heard of...the term "Spoiler Alert"?

A lot of people haven't played the campaigns yet, or not all the way through, but may. Don't you think they would like to be surprised by the plot twists?

That post was 2 months ago. Yes, now I've played the DL campaign, but not completed it yet. And I knew that before I read you post(which was just now), so no spoiler here.

I've come upto the "Apocalypse" mission in the DL with no mission lost yet on Painful but moved upto Crippling recently.

One thing I've learned is that you don't have to match the Dread Lord firepower or to level your defences against their attack. I can get to Advanced Miniaturization, Medium hulls, Phasor V, Enhanced Logistics, Warp Drive, etc by mid year 1 and the Dread lords had about 60 operational ships by that time while my ships produced about 33 attack. Believe it or not, I've killed 32 dread lord ships(frigates, defenders, escorts, fighters, etc) while losing 4 frigates myself.

The secret is to get first strike. The Dread Lords use little(compared to their attack rating) to no defences and they have the same ammount of HP as you. All you have to do is to strike first(and have Micro repair bots and Xinathium Hull Plating) and eliminate their HP. Have above atleast 22 attack on your ships and strike first. Thats all you need.

That's DL of course. Playing through DA, if you try this, your ship will get killed an their ship will survive with 1 hp. In DA, fleets of super-defensive ships would be better since the Dreads generally don't use fleets and defenses.
