From the Shadows

A Story

A stale wind whistled through the crumbling remains of the abandoned city that was once the capital of a powerful empire. Pulling his cloak closer around him, the one that others called Eratan, looked solemnly at the sky above. Once, in his youth, it was filled with many bright stars, but now only the dim light of a few distant pinpricks reached his eyes. A tear began to form but the dry air left his eyes and skin parched. He continued on in this fashion, walking down with his cloak pulled tight what may have been a wide boulevard in its past, toward a large palatial building ahead with a dome that had a huge blast hole facing the heavens.

He entered the structure, pulling the creaking metal door behind him to shut out the coldness of the outside. Down a wide hallway he walked, past the fallen statues of what once must have been the great leaders and warriors of this world, to a room where the flickering of light could be seen.

A soft voice of a female broke the silence of the world Eratan was in. "Ah, Master Eratan, my humblest greeting to you." Eratan only nodded at the female, who was also cloaked. The room was dominated by a round table in the center that had a giant crack on its surface. Around this table sat a group of about twenty beings, all cloaked like Eratan, obscuring their features from sight. The female gestured to Eratan and led him to a seat of what was probably the head of the table as the emblem of the former empire was directly in front of it. As Eratan sat, the female cleared her voice and called out in her dulcet tones.

"Hail friends!" and she looked around at the mysterious figures around her. "Our final member, and most important guest, has arrived. It is time we finally discuss the matter that we have been working toward for the better part of the last two years. I shall cede the Floor to Master Eratan." With that, the female sat to what was Eratan’s right and looked toward him. Sighing, Eratan pushed himself away from the table and stood before everyone. He seemed slight and yet had an imposing presence.

"Darkness is all we now know. Some of us are lucky enough to remember a time when there was light, but as every day passes it becomes more and more of a fleeting memory. But today….today we have the chance to change that. It won’t be easy, and there is a good chance we will fail, but if we don’t attempt it, then we are doomed for all eternity. Worst case is that we continue to live in the Shadows, so any outcome would be an improvement. We all are here because we have recognized our common plight, despite past differences, and that this is the galaxy’s only hope. We will change our tomorrow, no matter the cost."

Chapter II: Out of the Shadows

They named me Eratan Ardae. It meant something once in an ancient tongue used on this world. I had a real name when I was younger, had a family, and a life too but I don’t remember any of it. The plan was suicide. Took fifty or so years to kill you, but it was suicide, when the time frame was up, poof, you were dead. Stopped a lot of people from being willing to participate, in case it failed. I had no such qualms. Having no one that I would be leaving behind, no friends, no occupation, I knew right away what my decision was. There were twenty of us that were appointed to the command council, and for some strange reason they all elected me as its leader. Master Ardae they called me and they were my Brothers and Sisters. We managed to find a total of six billion volunteers, an actually amazing total, almost 18% of the population. Finally, we were able to cobble together three ships out of various space debris and left over parts that were scavenged.

I didn’t fully understand what we were attempting to do, I mean, the science behind it. I did know that my job was stop the Triumvirate from killing billions of people. I wasn’t really sure how we were going to do it. We had little in the way of resources or technology. Our best skill would probably be our Espionage skills, as we could effectively blend in with any crowd.

For two years we planned and prepared for this one moment, for the hope or doom of us all.

…The light was searing, and I don’t think I have ever felt that level of pain in my life. For what seemed like an eternity it seemed like every fiber of my being was being stretched across the entire universe. If I could have screamed I would but it would only have been drowned out by all the other piercing screams in the void.

I don’t know how long I was out for. I do know I woke with the warming rays of a sun upon my face. It had worked! There was hope still.

We named our new world Avathar so that we would never forget where we had come from; the Shadows…

Progress Report: January 2228
First Councilor's Office
Eratan Ardae, Master and First Councilor of the High Council of the Dominion
Gondolin, Avathar

Over the last two years I have been rewarded with leading the Dominion in its expansion to 18 worlds. I have included in this update to my fellow Brothers and Sisters of the High Council, a Quarterly Report compiled by the POB (Project Oversight Bureau, Department of the Treasury). It will give you all the necessary statistical information needed for your continued approval of projects and hopeful continued support of myself in a leadership position. I have also added to the "Mini-Map", arrow representations of the future growth pattern suggested by the Department of Sciences and the Department of Defense. While following those suggestions gives us both large territorial control and easy reach to all major powers, it also leaves us effectively splitting the quadrant in half and could allow for our flanking by allied nations.

Signed,
E. Ardae

(Author's Note): Info on the Game itself: This is a Meta game, I plan on submitting it upon victory. I think its on Crippling but I may have put it on Painful instead, I can't say for sure. This is about the level I am usually happiest with the AI and myself without having to really micromanage what I'm doing so I can achieve a possibly victory. I can't say which victory status remains (due to being a spoiler), just that only one outcome is possible.

Finally, thanks for the positive feedback so far! And no, I won't let what has happened in these two first years just slip by.

Author's Note: OOOPS!!!! Its not a biggie but I forgot to post a screenshot for the storyline PRIOR to the "Status Report" chapter. I have included it here, as it will explain the basic plans of the Dominion and who each race is on the Mini-Map. (Working 10hr days will make you forget things, sorry!)

HOLY CRAP!! I use the 'Elements in Quenya and Sindarin Names' all the time! The leader of my custom civ (The Endoran Coalition of Worlds) is named Sereg-Thol (Blood Helm). The names of the four species that make up the Coalition are Eren(lonely, or alone), Luin (blue), Carochan (derived from fang, or fanged), and Kanoan (derived from Kano = Commander).

Thats awesome.

Good so far.

Chapter III: How it Began (2226-2228)

“Turn that damn viewer off!” I yelled at the Operations Officer at the forward console. The MC-Republic may not be my command but I did know that my orders took precedent over any lowly captain’s.

With a quick move of his hand the officer flicked the screen off and the ugly green insectoid head of the Thalan drone disappeared from my sight.

“Councilor, well, now we can report that we’ve made contact with all of the members of the Triumvirate.” said Captain Tzien Kal.

“Thank you, Captain, for the confirmation of what I already know.” Ugly creatures those Thalans, though I will give them credit for their audacity and production skills. At least with the Yor I can admit that they were altered by the Precursors to be the pain in the ass that they’ve become, even the Korath are just mentally deranged Drengin. But the Thalans…with their ‘we know something you don’t know’ smirk and ‘we’re right, you’re wrong’ attitude, personally, I can’t wait to have the floor covered in those fragile exoskeletons they call a body.

I had been in a bad mood all morning since I had received a communiqué from Avathar stating how the Drengin, who’s territory was on our northern boundary, were taking great pains to build up their military and had even been so bold as to colonize some minor worlds that fell within our sphere of influence. While not a staunch supporter or really even friendly to each other, we had managed to work out some fairly agreeable transactions of some Drengin heavy fighters for a couple hundred BCs and they had even given me a small amount of cash for my birthday last year, not enough to really do me any good, but the thought was what counted.

I knew from day one that we would have to face conflicts that would be uncomfortable for us but our objective was clear and no Drengin, Terran, Torian, or anyone else could stand in our way of that.

But ugh, those frakkin Thalans had to go and REALLY ruin my day. They propped themselves up RIGHT next to Terran controlled space. Of course those Humans have no idea what is in store for them and the Thalans are trying to play that whole innocent bystander boloney. If it wasn’t for the fact that the Drengin are constituting a more immediate threat, and I suppose also for that the Thalans are friendly with the Altarians, I’d be on my way right now with my squadrons of fighters.

“Councilor, we are receiving another communiqué from Avathar. Its from First Sister Eleysa’s Office.” announced the Operations Officer.

“Thank you, Lieutenant. Captain, if I may, I will be in your Office for a moment.” and with that Captain Kal nodded his assent and I went my way.

Once the door slid shut behind me I called out for the holo communicator to activate. Within a moment, a pale blue light coalesced into Sister Eleysa’s shrouded form.

“Master Ardae, my apologies if I have intruded upon your duties but a matter of some importance has arisen.” and Eleysa bowed low and waited for my response.

“No need to worry Eleysa. We were just contacted by one of the drones of the Thalans but otherwise nothing much exciting has happened on this trip. I’m guessing you bring news about the Drengin?”

“Yes, Eratan. Our Intelligence Corps and Defense Minister Ranu inform me that if we allow the Drengin much more time to expand we will be hard-pressed to take them on at a later date. Our concern is that since they are encroaching on Torian space, they will begin an all-out invasion and eventually, if they win, surround both our north and western borders. If however, we were to begin plans on subverting Drengin territory now, while they are still relatively weak, we can hope to double or even triple our control over this region of space.”

“Yes, Eleysa, I have been thinking the same thing as of late. It is no surprise to me, however saddening, what action we must take. Contact Sciences Minister Kalyn Mui to speed up development on all soldiering technologies. Also, let Minister Ranu contact the various governors and begin full construction on more attack ships and assault carriers. We know what is at stake Eleysa, and I can’t allow even the Drengin to get in our way. We’ll take every last world if we have to.”

Chapter IV: The Path Diverges

I sat in my office looking at the holo recording of the conquest of Drengi. The Drengin homeworld had managed to hold out longer than its colonies, but in time, and with enough troops, it too fell. My foot infantry, clad in their black armor with silvery metallic masks, were marching in formation down the central boulevard of the Drengin capital toward the Imperial Palace. Brother Vegali, a towering behemoth, was there to receive the Terms of Surrender from Lord Kona. It was not our wish or desire to exterminate the Drengin, and originally, not even to go to war, but they interfered with our plans and the matter had to be handled. We allowed Lord Kona to be a puppet ruler of his disenfranchised people but we ensured that the Drengin would never be able to rebel against our rule.

The fact the Drengin had been willing to interfere with our mission gave us quite the quandary: what do with the other non-Triumvirate species. Our plan had never included enslaving or dominating the other species, in fact we had thought they would just let us proceed without any worries at all, since the Triumvirate races were all quite vile. But the Thalans had become quite close with the Altarians and Arceans, which mean almost certain war if we went after them and the Korath and Iconians had a working relationship.

Brothers Kyrin e’Tor and Dol Bharad presented an option at Council about midway through the Drengin Operation. Since we knew the Triumvirate was evil and had to be stopped at all costs, and since our loss would result in the genocide or enslavement of all the other species, they presented that the Dominion instead should conquer the other races, not for our own personal gain, but for the protection and longevity of those species, even if it was to be under our own control.

Sister Irena Erikovich argued that if we did this in many ways we were no worse than the Triumvirate, but ultimately the Council voted unanimously in the e’Tor-Bharad Plan.

The strategy was set as thus: we would conquer the Torians and Terrans as they were both completely unaligned. The Torians had already suffered a lot of damage from the Drengin and were constantly joining our ranks as it was anyhow. The Terrans were a bit more of a problem as they did have a moderate navy but since the Altarians were still friendly with us, we were able to quickly sweep through the Terran worlds.

This all lasted eight months past the Drengin downfall. As of last week we were encroaching on Earth and the final Terran worlds when the Arceans and Iconians broke off trade with us. Spies report a major shift in policy amongst the two and a closer bonding, resulting in a strong mutual wariness of the Dominion.

As I was aboard the HC-Triumphant entering the Sol system, I received news from Minister Kal…the Arcean-Iconian Alliance had just fired upon, and destroyed, the Azure Squadron, a patrol fleet of star fighters on the northern edge of former Drengin space.

War was on.

Your not going to abandon this AAR just like you did with the Terran Commonwealth, are you?
I PROMISE not to abandon this one, I already have more chapters either actually written or at least story boarded. I'm finally through my first round of exams in school (so it'll be about another 2 weeks before they (the profs) decide to slam me with all of it again; and while I'm putting in a lot of time at work, I will make sure I will make at least one, if not two, posts this coming week.

Chapter V: The Shadow Revealed

“Who are you?” said Lord Vega as my personal bodyguard surrounded him. Not once had anyone in the Arm seen one of us unmasked, in battle our soldiers use a nano-disruptor to commit suicide and leave no remains, and even amongst each other we remained cloaked lest a spy be among us to report back to its masters.

I let out a cold laugh. “Many have asked, none have been answered. Why do you think I would reveal myself to you? Just be content than even though we have destroyed your armies and conquered your words that your people are safe and still have freedom. You are now a Thrall of the mighty Dominion, you should be thankful for my kindness.”

Even sitting and bound, the frame of Lord Vega towered over my cloaked form. I could not kill Vega, though the Council was a bit worried about leaving him in his position of power. The Arceans are a very powerful race, even now subjugated they could prove to be…unruly if we didn’t find a way to properly subdue them. That left me with few options, one in particular I was not overly fond of acting upon.

Vega growled and stared down at me. “Free?! Do you expect us to be slaves for you, like a Torian! My people would never accept such a position. Already I have put into action plans to make sure your time here on Arcea is short-lived.”

I looked to my assistant on this one…if Arcea did take some drastic measures it could prove to be incredibly devastating to our objectives. After checking some data equipment he looked back at me. “Master, the Arceans have begun a controlled overload of the central power station, if it self destructs, it will destroy nearly half this planet.”

I looked again at Lord Vega. With a resigned smile I bowed slightly to him. “Very well, Vega, I will reveal to you knowledge about the Dominion but you must first call of your plan of action.”

“And why would I do that?”

With that, I threw off my hood. The reaction on Vega’s face was priceless.
“President Bradley?”, his normally booming voice now nothing more than a scared whimper.

I laughed at that. “Not quite. I’m his great-grandson.”

Chapter VI: Reality Twisted

“I have met the son of Alan Bradley and he can not be more than twenty years in the reckoning of the humans.”

“Oh, very observant, Lord Vega. Then, you have met my grandfather Michael.” Vega’s shallow breathing and quizzical look at me were in some way a bit unnerving but I rationalized it as a result to shock.

I took a step closer. “Do you know that I wasn’t always called by this name? It means ‘The Man Alone in the Noble Shadow’, Eleysa gave it to me when I was put in charge of the Council. But my real name, one that I haven’t used in ten years, that no one in this galaxy has even heard in whispers…that name is William Alan Bradley. I am the great-grandson of President Alan Bradley and the grandson of Michael Bradley and Eleys Mue. Quite a heritage for me to live up to, though I think I’ve managed quite well.”

“But how? Why are you here, conquering this galaxy, from your ancestors?”

“Ahhh, the crux of the matter. Actually, we came here only to stop three races, that in my time are known as the Triumvirate. You know them as the Thalans, Yor, and Korath. You see, the Thalans are actually like us, time-travelers that came back in time to stop some horrific event from happening. They had good intentions. What they didn’t take into account however, is that they traveled back in time from another dimension. This caused a rip in the very fabric of space-time that meant at the exact moment they left their time and dimension, a wave of dark energy swept through every dimension and every reality in my time and destroyed almost all life. Instead of billions of stars and planets and peoples, we have a sky that is filled with less than hundreds of stars and worlds formerly paradises that are completely barren, unable to support life.

You see, in a few years, the Thalans decided to take even more extreme measures in preventing the Terrans from committing some terrible act. Using their technology from the future they became the masters of the Yor and used them much like the Dread Lords had millennia ago, to destroy their enemies. Kindar, of the Korath, somehow manipulated his way into an alliance with the Thalan-Yor and the Triumvirate was created. For ten years war raged across the galaxy as the Allied races worked tirelessly against the Triumvirate, losing at every turn.

Then the event that the Thalans had come to stop occurred. But it wasn’t the Terrans who caused it…well not in its entirety. The Korath had long been mesmerizedd by the Dread Lords, unbeknownst to the Thalans. On that day, a fleet of ragtag Allied ships, led by the Terrans, learned that the Korath were about to perform a ritual using ancient technology to call forth the entire power of the banished Dread Lords for their own use. After managing to get a strike team to the Temple, the Terran soldiers fought heavily to get to the ritual room where they managed to stop the Korath…but instead they were struck by the dark energies released, and that reverberated through the entire human race, twisting them and making them evil beings bent on control and power.”

“But you….are you not human?”

“My grandmother was Eleys Mue remember? I’m three-quarters Altarian actually. But of everyone alive in my time, I am the most ‘human’, thus my name as ‘Man Alone’.

I began to pace and my speaking became quicker. “It was actually those dark energies released then, that made the Thalans first aware of the threat that the humans now poised. So for another fourty years war raged as the powerful inter-dimensional Thalan fought the dark energy Terrans, but it was but a slow death, as the Terrans were wining. It was as defeat loomed that they put their plan in place. And in one day, the universe, my universe, was destroyed. Not by the Dread Lords or by twisted humans, but by the Thalan who, by going back in time, actually put in place the cause for their doom.”

Lord Vega seemed to grasping all this remarkably well, but the Arceans were a very intelligent species, as I well knew. I was still pacing.

“So you see Lord Vega, we had to come back in time to stop the Triumvirate from ever forming, and more importantly to stop the Thalan from interfering.”

“But, that is exactly what you are doing! You have come to conquer us, to make a galaxy of your own choosing!”

I stopped and spun on Vega. “NO! I have come to protect ALL of our futures. If the Thalan don’t succeed in forming the Triumvirate, the Korath will fail in learning of the dark ritual, and the Terrans will never be hit with the energy that changes them. And unlike the Thalan, my coming here to this time is a death sentence. When the time comes in about fifty years that Thalans would have left their dimension, every member of the Dominion that came from my time will cease to exist since that future will no longer be happening. The Thalan shouldn’t be here at all!!! And if we manage to stop them, they will not have to go back in time and everything will be reset and no one will ever know what could have happened.”

Lord Vega was quiet for a few moments. “Very well, Master Ardae, I will stop the destruction of this world. And I will have my people bow to your control, for the betterment of the galaxy and our future.”

My assistant called to me. “Master, I don’t know the who or how or what but the reaction has stopped. We are no longer in danger sir.”

I looked back at Lord Vega, smiled, and bowed. “Thank you, Lord Vega for your cooperation, and I must ask for your forgiveness for what I am about to do.”

The fear, a rare site in an Arcean’s face, returned. “And…what is that?”

I turned to my closest guard. “I am afraid I must kill you now.”

“NO! wait, I beg…”

And the hulking form of what used to be Lord Vega fell to the floor as the laser blast him.

Not looking at anyone in particular I spoke aloud. “I only hope Vegali will understand my actions.”

Chapter VII: The Shadow Fades

The galaxy was in chaos. War was raging across hundreds of systems as the Dominion forces continued to strike out against the Thalans and the future Triumvirate. With the fall of the Arcean-Iconian Alliance, the Thalans realized what our course of action would be and promptly began attacking the worlds we held in former Terran space, attempting for the mass genocide of humans. The Altarians, beholden to their human brethren, quickly came to our aide, and the Korath circled above the frenzy like vultures. Our own hands were full dealing with the Yor on our eastern boundaries and the various Thalan skirmishes that would occur when we met in space.

Ships were being destroyed at an alarming rate, and we feared for the welfare of the Altarians and Humans. Also, upon learning of the death of Lord Vega, the Council recalled me to Avathar for a special inquiry. Things were not going well.

Councilor Eleysa sat in my seat at the center of the grand table. She arose and spoke in a tone very much unlike her normal sweet tones. It was cold and punctuated, lacking emotion of any kind.

“Eratan Ardae, nee’ William Alan Bradley, First Councilor and Master of the Shadow Council, we have called you before this tribunal to answer for your actions in the death of the Arcean leader, Lord Vega; for the current situation, that is a major departure from the original goals of this Council and finally, for pursuing and acting upon matters without Council consent, advisement, or information. Evidence for these charges will be presented by both sides and this Tribunal’s findings shall be final on this matter.”

Eleysa sat back down and Councilor Kzin Hal, a Torian, rose for the Prosecution. Kzin and I had had a very good working relationship, but I worried that may also make him more likely to be tough on me. Junior Councilor Aerythe Cloude, an Altarian that oversaw the Council's Justice division, was to be my Defender.

Kzin spoke. “Eratan, I will begin with the lesser charge of properly informing the Council of actions taken. Is it true that you ordered for the subjugation of Drengin space without Council approval?”

“I gave this order based on the advice of Councilor Eleysa, Defense Minister Ranu, and the Intelligence Corps.”

“That is all well and good Eratan, but did you receive or even seek the approval of the full Council?”

“No, but the Council was fully aware of the actions I was taking during that campaign. We later approved the e'Tor-Bha...”

Kzin interrupted me as I was finishing my sentence. “The defendant admits to not seeking Council approval on this matter. Eratan, did you seek Council approval for the actions taken in response to the Arcean-Iconian incursion against the Azure Squadron?”

I knew now that Kzin was going to ask me about every major command decision, many of which I made unilaterally, with what I understood as Council support; apparently not it seemed.

“No, I did not. I ordered our fleets to be mobilized immediately in response.”

“Finally, Eratan, did you discuss with the Council how to proceed once the Thalans and Yor began their current actions?”

“No, I did not. I mobilized our fleets to protect the Terrans and Altarians against their aggression.”

“Thank you. Councilor, let it show that the defendant has repeatedly admitted to not informing or collaborating with the Council on command decisions.”

Behind me, I could hear the chamber room doors open. Throwing a quick glance over my shoulder I saw the towering form of Vegali enter and sit a few rows behind me. This was beginning to not look good at all for me.

Kzin began again. “On the second charge of not following the goal of this endeavor, I need only to repeat my earlier statements. How do you answer?”

Great, I was getting raked here. “Only that the situation warranted radically divergent techniques in bringing the Triumvirate to bear, and that the actions I called for were means to this end.”

“Even at the loss of Allied life that could adversely affect our future?”

“Objection! Calls for speculation on part of the defendant.” Well at least Aerythe wasn’t totally quiet.

“Sustained.”

Kzin didn’t lose a beat. “On the last charge, the death of Lord Vega, leader of the Arcean Empire. Not only did you reveal yourself to Vega, which is against every Code that we have established against the revealing of our purpose and true nature, but you, and I will not mince words here, in fact commanded his murder.”

“Objection your honor! Vega’s death has not been ruled a murder by the Council yet.”

“Overruled. Continue Councilor Kzin.”

“Isn’t it true Eratan, that you gave Vega sensitive information about the Dominion and that the only way you felt he would remain quiet on this would be for his termination.”

“Yes, but Vega was planning on destroying all of Arcea!”

“Were you positive that the readings weren’t being faked? Did you seek alternate options?”

“No, but I felt that I had very limited time, and I made a decision, one that I will have to live with.”

“So you admit to commanding Vega’s murder?”

“Your honor! I must object!” Aerythe was visibly upset over where this was going.

“Overruled! Sit down Councilor.”

“I only did what was in the best interests of the Dominion and the lives of innocent Arceans.”

The minute I finished saying that I knew someone had just jolted up from their seat. Someone very tall and imposing.

“YOU KILLED MY FATHER!” and Vegali rushed towards me.

I felt something stab deep into my back and I lunged forward. The room was filled with screams and the scrambling of people as they either ran away or tried pulling Vegali off of me. I looked down at my chest and saw an Arcean ritual blade, a tri-bladed Gelia, sticking out of it covered in blood. The room began to swim in front of my eyes and the screams began sounding like they were traveling through water. A moment later everything descended into darkness. I knew no more.

As the guards pulled Vegali away, Eleysa ran to the fallen form of Eratan. Putting her hand to his neck she felt for a pulse. After a moment she looked up at Kzin, Aerythe, and the rest of the Shadow Council.

“Eratan is dead.”
