Curious Kim Visits the Eye Doctor

I finally admitted that 5-6 years of wearing the same contact lenses (well lense - one was replaced about 3 years ago after a bar fight -- not as good a story as it sounds), it was time to break down and visit the eye doctor. (Thanks to Cari for a great recommendation.)
According to Dr L, I'm "a contact lense addict."
Do you ever give your eyes a break?: "When I sleep..?"
Turns out my lenses are warped and scratched, and irritating the heck out of my eyes. That explains a lot. Apparently your eyes aren't supposed to have those little red lines all over them. Who knew?

So, gas permeable lenses should be replaced every year. Or, as Dr. L. put it, "2 divided by 1 - every year." He must have had a long day.

Eye exams have come a long way, and now you look into a machine, which reads what prescription you need and spits out a "receipt" with the necessary information. Forget painful eye drops and dark rooms. Unfortunately, glaucoma tests haven't changed.
My prescription has, slightly. New contacts on the way. New glasses too? Sure, why not.

One of the girls working there feels confident enough to step up and help me pick out some cute little frames that look good on me. Thank heavens, because I don't know what the heck I'm doing. I put myself at her mercy. In hindsight, I wonder why I let someone with "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" hair give my fashion advice...

The best news of all is that my eyes are very healthy on the inside. So says Dr. L.
I think they're even scratchier today than yesteray, but, like a true addict, I blink through the pain.
Can't wait until next week when my new ones come in. Good for another 5 years...!

I have never heard that gas permeable were supposed to be changed every year.  My Mom had a pair for over 10 years.  She went every year to have her eyes checked, but they didn't change (which the doctor said was mainly because gas permeable actually change the shape of your eye while you wear them so your eyes don't change as much as if youwere wearing a soft contact) so she didn't get a new pair until they started bugging her.

In hindsight, I wonder why I let someone with "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" hair give my fashion advice...

hehe....that gave me a funny visual....

I'd never heard of replacing them every year either. I was told you should have them polished/cleaned every year, but whatever. I trust that I'll go another good 3-5 years before remembering to visit the eye doctor.

Are soft lenses out of the question? I've been wearing disposable soft lenses for the last 8 years or so and I love them. You are supposed to leave them in overnight, remove them once per week for cleaning and eye rest, then throw them away every two weeks or so. I admin that I usually stretch the time limits, but I'm rarely uncomfortable with them. Only bad thing is that Accuview, my lense manufacturer, only makes them up to a -9 power. my vision is -9.75 (L) / -10.5 (R), so it takes some additional correction with light wire frame glasses to bring me to 20/20 vision. However, the glasses are light, look good, and I can take them off for sunglasses, evenings, or whatever.

Thanks for the idea MrPerky.
When I started wearing contacts, about 15 years ago, the doctor recommended rgp's because they are supposed to keep your eyes from changing shape, ie, changing prescription, which mine did quite frequently. I've just gotten so used to them now that I don't think it makes much difference to me. The care is minimal, and they are very durable.
Someday I might consider getting laser surgery. Some of my friends have had this done and have only good things to say about it.

Speaking of, I have to run and pick up my new lenses and glasses. I feel like it's Christmas!! Well, accept I had to pay for my own gifts...
