Space Rangers Video Issues

I've had problems running Space Rangers on my system. The first time I ran it, it seemed like nothing happened at all. When I tried to run it again, the monitor went black, but I got sound. I hit escape a few times and eventually got to a game screen and was able to play. The next time I ran it, the monitor said it couldn't display that video mode, and stuck there until I put my computer in sleep mode. Even if I can get it to run occasionally, it doesn't seem worth the trouble if it's going to have these random problems. Any known fixes?

My system:
Dell Inspiron e1705
Core Duo 2300
2 GB DDR2-667 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon x1400
Dell Ultrasharp 2405fpw 24" external monitor via DVI (1920x1200 native)

I've run into these myself, but haven't found any workaround. Usually if you hit Escape a few times it'll just bypass the movies and get you into the game. From there things work fine.
