The Old Guard

Lord Vega sat quietly behind the massive oval table and waited patiently for the other leaders to join him.

The table was huge, enough room to seat at least 20 other delegates of any size or stature, with the United Planets emblem in the middle and the other races flags etched into the surface around the edge at regular intervals.

Evil and good alignment races were kept a distance apart by a healthy mixture of neutral and minor races.

There may have been peace but there was no need to rub anyones nose in it!

The room itself was a grand affair albeit a mismatch of the best art and craft work from every culture of every race. Beautiful paintings sat on huge wooden easels , hand carved wooden furniture placed on exotic rugs stood along one wall while massive marble statues stood sombrely in the corners and massive photos hung on the walls showing off major achievements from all races.

The whole space screamed of history, the screams from the countless billions who had died in the countless battles that the races and cultures had thrust upon each other.

It was deathly silent.

And still Lord Vega waited.

United Planet meetings were tedius to say the very least and were always an excuse for certain leaders to throw their weight but mostly influence around.

For five whole years Lord Vega had been able to maintain and secure harmony throughout the galaxy, the appointed negotiator between the good and evil alignments. As always this meeting would be another test.

His appointment was not by choice, although his race were the driving force behind military accomplishments that even the Drengin could not compete with,he had already received some resisitance from his home world when he had decided that the conquests were over and it was time for peace.

Indeed he thought that would be the end of it, a succesful military career along with stable home planets throughout the stars.

Time for the old warrior to retire in glory to Arcea!

Not a bit of it, a rushed United Planets conference had him elected 'Maintainer Of The Peace'.

He couldn't possibly turn it down, that would have been an admission that he couldn't do the job, that was five years ago.

The door clanged open and the Terran Leader stepped through.

The Old Guard continued......

'And how is Lord Vega?' beamed the Terran leader his hand jutting out in a vain hope for the handshake which would never happen.

Despite Lord Vega being seated the two men were virtually the same height, one an old style warrrior, the other an elected leader, clean shaven, wearing a brilliant blue uniform with shiny medals twinkling like stars blazed across his chest. He had charmed and persuaded his way into his leadership. Alan Bradley was an excellent diplomat and not to be under estimated.

He led a strong Terran race, extremly adaptable with well respected soldiers and a sound if not tech leading military.

In the past both Leaders had allied together against the joint forces of Drengin and Korath to protect the minor race planets and drive back the 'evil' dominence of the galaxy. When the war was reaching it's climax Lord Vega had argued that both races should be destroyed as he saw them as the one true menace to the galaxy, however the Terran argued a different view in that all battle scared races had suffered enough.

In some respect it was the influence of the Terran Leader who had encouraged Lord Vega to negotiate peace against both foes and stop the blood bath before anymore innocent lives were lost.

'I'm not trading anything today!' grimaced Lord Vega trying hard not to let a slight smile pass his lips.

'What!' gasped Alan Bradley 'this is new technology, it will put you years ahead of your competitors in ship speed. Just think, faster than any ship in the galaxy. Oh...well he sighed I'll just have to speak to the Torians instead'

'You may try your tricks with the Torians' laughed Lord Vega but please spare me the sales talk, my science robots still can't get those universal translators you traded with us last month to work properly!'

'My mechanics ordered some spare parts for one of our star bases from the Iconions last week and ended up with a bowl of fruit!'

'You owe me!'

He stood up to his full height totally swamping the Terran Leader with his size and presence but despite his menacing appearance a smile had crept across his face.

'Are you prepared for the meeting?' he said slapping a massive hand down on the Terran leaders shoulder.

'As always!' Alan Bradley smiled back, 'any chance of a cigar before we start?'

Lord Vega shook his head 'no, we need to be fully prepared, I beleive today will be a test for us all.'

The Old Guard part 3....

Soon the room was full of the most important leaders in the galaxy sat quietly waiting for the meeting to begin with only the low buzzing sound of their universal translators breaking the silence.

Pleasantrys had already been exchanged mostly with head nods and an acknowledgement that they were present.

United planet meetings were not occasions to let your guard down.

As always Lord Kona looked like he was going to rip someones head off,not that he would, his power had been diminished some time ago during a cruel campaign in which he had almost succeeded in conquering all of the minor races planets, only for his navies to be be snuffed out by a resurgence in his opponents fleet size and technology. They not only rescued their own worlds but pushed his empire back to his home planets from which he had started.

Why they had waited so long to use this manpower and resource had been eating away at him for five years, his paranoia rife as he looked suspiciously around the table.

Only the surprise intervention of Lord Vega with a peace plan and assurances from the minor races that they would end the war had stopped his defeat becoming extinction.

Despite this setback Lord Kona was still the most evil creature in the room, or so he would have you believe. He wore a black tunic made from the finest metals from his home planet, a black cloak hung from his neck, held on both sides by a ring of precious jewels. His eyes blood red were as piercing as the sun with a temper as hot and fiery to match. In Drengin mythology it was said his stare alone could chill a creature into submission. An empty holster swung by his hip as he sat, this was going to be another painfully boring meeting.

'It must have been the Torians!' Lord Kona seethed to himself 'but not long to wait now'.

Lord Vega stood up and opened the meeting with the usual confirmation of the agenda.

'First item to consider is the new prison, where it will be built and ultimately who will run it?'he said trying to sound as enthusiaistic as possible.

Pirates had long since been an irritant to all races, destroying trade traffic and sentry guard ships.Although most were kindly blasted into space, a growing number were being caught, their ships confiscated and the scoundrals sent to an already full to the brim prison run by the Thalan.

A ripple of debate proceeded with each race putting forward why it would or in most cases would not want such an eye sore on their planet.

Lord Kona thought carefully, having the prison on his planet would improve productivity as he could put the inmates to work building structures and planetary defences. This could be the first part of his plan to put his military back on the map.Plus they made such great entertainment, watching them work so hard under the whip!

Yes the prison would make an excellent addition to his planet, but how to get it, that would be the tricky part.
