editing PNG

a program that edits PNG files.

hello
I am trying to edit a PNG file that I have extracted from a cursor XP theme. I tried ACD photo editor 3.1 with no success. After cropping the image and saving it as a PNG file, the image becomes non-transparent unlike what it used to be!

So I am wondering what program do you guys use to edit a PNG file while retaining its transparency?

Thanks for your help in advanced

I use PS CS2 but most modern editors support editing and saving of the .png format, take ur pick of software.

Ths program is free Paint.Net and has good transparncy handling.

Nowhere near as many bells & whistles as PaintShop, but then it's easier to use!

Windows Paint.exe (since XP) also saves PNG AFAIK, but the way transparency is edited etc is not so elegant I think.

if all you're doing is cropping, do in Irfanview you can save the transparency

paint.net as mentioned is excellent for freeware

Thanks guys for all your suggestions.
I downloaded Irfanview because the rest of the programs might be a bit complicated for what I want to do.

I managed to crop the image and save it as a transparent PNG. But when I import it into cursor XP free edition 1.31, the image appears with a black background!!
To test if I successfully saved the PNG file with a transparent background, I opened it using IE 7 and it appeared transparent!

So what I'm I doing wrong in cursor XP? I have the frames set to 1 and the intervals set to 1.

As you can tell I am new to this.

So any help is greatly appreciated.

is it a cursor, trail, or follower?

When you save it in Irfanview, make sure 'Save Transparent Color' is checked in the Options box.

what's the difference?
All what I'm trying to do is to replace [import] the main animated cursor of a theme named sliced by a non-animated cursor. So I am cropping out the animation sequence from the image file.

When you save it in Irfanview, make sure 'Save Transparent Color' is checked in the Options box.

Yes save transparent color is checked . I also tried to save it while binary encoding is selected as well as ASCII.

May Be Irfanview is not compatible with cursor XP? Because it appears transparent in IE 7!!

Thanks again for your help
