With palms together,
Good Morning All,
Our sesshin was cancelled early due to lack of attendance. Rev. Busho, Kajo and I made the decision after lunch yesterday. Good thing since two of the three us us were pretty whipped by the race we did in the morning.
Team Zen was well represented at the Summer Run along the Rio Grande yesterday morning. Revs Goho, Busho and myself did the race. Also part of our group were my son Jacob, Almost Daughter-in-Law Julie, Training Partner Katie Anderson, and, of course, My Little Honey. Rev. Busho and I decided to walk the race rather than run, so Katie did a nearly a second loop of the out and back course just to walk with us. Inspiring. Rev. Goho biked to the race then ran a fast pace only to bike home. What a guy!
I was at the very last of the pack starting, noticed I couldn't stand to be last (gotta work on this) and moved out as fast as I could walking. I set my sights on a man with a hat about a quarter mile ahead of me and made the decision to pass him on the return. This meant I could not let him get away from me any more than he already was.
The Rio Grande is full of water it being both the rainy season and planting season. And the humidity was very high. We were racing in a blanket of water it seemed. The mosquitoes required a layer of repellent. The mix was, well, less than optimal
Katie, who had began running after a short warm-up, found us at about the 2 k mark, returning on her running loop. She decided to end her run there and walk the course with us again. At the turnaround, I had gained some on White Hat. Katie remarked that he wasn't actually walking, but was doing a very low to the ground jog, like a shuffle. Oh well. I picked up the pace and tried consistently for a 15 minute pace. My poor left foot was dragging a bit and I tripped a time or two, but I stayed on the crusher fine part of the path so my shoe never really caught enough to trip me.
About half way back I finally passed White Hat. Yes! And then set my sights on the next race walker, but he was far away. Still, its good to have an aim.
We crossed the line at 50:10. Not bad for not having trained as a walker. My best pace was 11:57, but my average pace was 16:10. (slower out than back).
I picked up a flier for the next track club race, The Whole Enchilada 5 k. Labor Day weekend in September. I will run that one.
Be well.
