Grid Computering - testing it out

Has anyone done any grid computing Link? I am going to be doing some soon and wanted to get a feel for it. I am going to start out using Perl and the Globus toolkit. http://www.globus.org/
IBM has like a 6 article http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/views/grid/libraryview.jsp?search_by=build+grid+with+perl sample of how to do it.
IBM also has a middleware called OptimalGrid http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/optimalgrid?open&S_TACT=105AGX59&S_CMP=GR&ca=dgr-gw17awoptimalgrid, but I am not sure about using that. There is also BOINC http://boinc.berkeley.edu/, but not sure about that either, but it uses the Globus toolkit as well.
