A Simple Guide for Players

Hello and welcome to the Metaverse League.

We here at the MVL want to present to you, the Player, a one-stop shop for all the information you may need or be interested in about the MVL. This page is broken up into sections. The Sections are Bold and Highlighted for faster reading, so you can skip down the page to what you want:

Section 1: Brief History and Origins
Section 2: Player/Membership Requirements and Duties
Section 3: Game/Round Setup and Requirements
Section 4: A Beginner’s Guide to the MVL (FAQs)
Section 5: Important Links

SECTION ONE: Brief History and Origins.

The Metaverse League was an original idea of Ghostwes in the summer of 2007. The origins of the MVL can be found in this thread, here.

The Metaverse League is brought to you by the Metaverse Council and is administered by Silverbeacher, the current MVL Commissioner.
The Metaverse League exists as another fun way to enjoy Galactic Civilizations II and to promote camaraderie between players. We thank you for showing interest in joining the MVL but we understand that you may have many questions in what joining the MVL means for you, your team, and the Galactic Civilizations Universe at large.

The Metaverse League at its most simple is group of individuals, broken up into teams, testing their skills against each other on a Metaverse game with a specific set of parameters. One of these games with various parameters is presented roughly once a month, and this is called a Round. The goal of each player and team is to win a game under those parameters in order to win Points for their team. This is the fundamental layout of the Metaverse League; everything else builds on top of that.

To add to the challenge of playing against each other we have implemented various Bonus Points that we award both individually and to teams based on various criteria that we have decided show skill, hard work, talent, or pure strategizing. Currently, we have Bonus Points for highest scores, fastest games, and early submissions.
At the end of a Round, the MVL Administrative team tabulates and tally the points that should be handed out for that Round. The Team with the most points wins that Round and gets bragging rights and a sense of accomplishment.

SECTION TWO: Player/Membership Requirements and Duties.

The MVL is open to all players of Galactic Civilizations II. Due to the nature of the MVL we can only use Metaverse games. To join one must only make a post in a MVL thread requesting to join or send a PM to the Commissioner, Neilo. We ask that only those that are serious about playing ask to join. The Commissioner will place you randomly to a Team but it is up to the Player to make a Confirmation, in the form of a submitted MV game, joining your team forum at the Galactic Core, or other communications to the MVL Administration or Team Captains. Continued membership is based solely upon participating in the MVL rounds, though we encourage players to participate in the various MVL discussions that may be open. A Player may select any of his/her Character’s, in an empire or not, for the MVL but must use that character from that point on for MVL games.

SECTION THREE: Game/Round Setup and Requirements.

Each Round, lasting one month, is randomly determined by the Commissioner using certain criteria. All MVL games have two main determining factors: map size and victory type. Other criteria, such as the research speed and amount of habitable planets, will vary from round to round. Each Round has its own Setup and Discussion Thread.
Submitted games must be Metaverse and no Cheat Flags can be tripped.

A Player may use any race and set their abilities to whatever they deem useful.
Difficulty level is determined by the current MV medal that has been achieved by that Player. A Player may play at or above that medal. If a player does not have a MV Difficulty Medal than they may choose at what level they wish to play at.

In the future we here at the MVL hope for inclusion in Kryo’s Altmeta. This will give us nearly automatic game submissions and score tabulation, making it much easier on the Player. Kryo’s Altmeta can be found here, AltMeta and our discussion about inclusion into it can be found here, The MVL and the AltMeta.

SECTION FOUR: A Beginner’s Guide to the MVL.
(FAQs)

So it has to be a Metaverse game?
Yes, we only accept Metaverse games. It is partly to maintain a level playing field since no one can use mods/cheats, and also for easy tabulation purposes.

Where Do I Sign Up?
We have a Sign-Up thread that can be found here, MVL Sign up Page.
Generally, a post in any of our threads letting us know that you want to get in on the action is enough. We almost always post a response within a few hours.

Ok, I’ve signed up and got a response; what’s this Core thing I am hearing about?

All of our teams have their own private forums located at the Tyranny of Evil Forums where they can discuss privately and candidly about strategies, game mechanics, and other such materials. While it is not a requirement for a player to sign up at the ToE forums, it is very highly recommended.

Ok, am I ready to play a game?

Yes, you are! Just play a Metaverse game using the parameters of that Round and submit it to the Metaverse.

Ok, it’s submitted to the Metaverse; now what?

Each Round has its own Official Thread, usually titled “The Metaverse League Round X”. Once you have submitted a game to the Metaverse you can make it your official submission for that Round by posting the game in that Round’s official thread. IMPORTANT: You can play as many times as you want in a Round but you can only make ONE official submission. We count the FIRST submission that is posted in the Official Round Thread as the official submission. We very highly encourage players to communicate with their Team and Captain before posting an official submission out of haste or ignorance.

Well, my game is posted. What do I do now?

You could just sit back and wait for the Round to end. The MVL administration team tries to have the scores finalized within two days. Usually, during the course of a Round we have other threads related to the MVL open for discussion. Sometimes we are discussing possible rule changes or alternatives to how the League is structured. Everyone is welcome to participate, and we really want you to! We follow a democratic model and require input from our members to make decisions that affect the whole League.

How does scoring work?

Each Round has Base Points and Bonus Points available to either a Player or a Team. 2 Base Points are awarded to a Player for a Win of the Correct Type, but no more than 8 points per Round per Team. Players and Teams that have Wins of the Correct Type are also eligible for Bonus Points that may be based upon Game Score, Game Speed, or MVL Submission Time. There is no limit to how many Bonus Points a Team or Player may receive, the only stipulation is that they have a win(s) of the Correct Type. For more on Scoring, please refer to the MVL Rulebook found here, MVL Rulebook.

What happens if something comes up in Real Life (RL) and I am unable to participate in a Round or the MVL?

We understand that life happens, trust us! Galactic Civilizations II, while incredibly fun, is still just a game. All we ask is that you inform either your Team Captain or the Commissioner that you won’t be able to participate so that we can make sure your Team has an opportunity to still compete.

What do I do or who do I contact if I have other questions or concerns?

We are fortunate to have a group of individuals that are very helpful and generous when it comes to aiding each other. Most questions may just be posed right in our forums but if you feel that you would like to keep it more private you can contact your Captain or one of the members of the MVL Administration. We will always respect the dignity and the privacy of our members.

Anything else I need to know?

Our standing rules are in our thread designated “The MVL Rulebook”, it is a formalized description of how the League operates and how games are scored. We suggest reading it through to have knowledge of these.

Spoken like a kzinrret! Cat got your tougue?

Kzinrret?! Those who have called a Kzin that have rarely lived to tell about it, and most often ended up as a tasty snack...

Hmmm...I dont remember what I was trying to post, just that the forums kept freezing, resulting in me getting very aggravated! I probably had a question of some sort, but it's now lost in the mists of time.

You want to join the League? That might be your question. You are more than welcome too of course.
It would be better if we just left their kind out of the league.
hey? where do I find the settings for round three?

and all the other general round three stuff.
I haven't heard anything quite yet. Neilo mentioned that he's been working some serious hours so we should probably cut him some slack. I don't think it will be very long to wait though.

Updated the OP to reflect the current state of the MVL, with extra links and an update on our progress.
OP has been updated; this should be our main linking page from all Round threads and if you are trying to recruit new players
Reply #58 Top
Hi all, the OP has been updated and will be again once the teams are set for round 6. I really would like this thread to be more active. If this could be our standard discuccion thread then will appear more active and as such may attract new players.

So we have the League club at the core, what shall we name this place. Or is League Club fine.

you cheese-eating snarfleblurger!!! oh wait...I forgot you're on my team Neilo
Hey, just read the new edits on the OP. They're really nice. Now, since most users on Galciv2.com have learned to ignore league threads, the only way to get people to read this is to purposefully send out invites or make a banner that links to this page and use it in your threads.

YES!! I want a new MVL banner, i was thinking something along the lines of a modified UN flag. This would go at the top of the OP and to be used as advertisment.

I'll see what i can make up but.
But either way, invite away gentleman!

Hi, all. I'm not a strong player but I have been winning some quiet games on a large galaxy with occasional planets at Normal difficulty. At Challenging I've been getting my butt kicked. I printed out Mumblefratz's strategy as laid out in a post dated 1/8/2008 and have been trying to adapt the principles of his huge games to my small games...not working too well, but I've gotten some new concepts for stategy.

I've registered a character Wotan on Metaverse, submitted some games, and have received invitations to join three empires. Sounds good, but I have no basis for choosing which one...are they pretty much the same?

Today I read the ML description thread posted by Neilo in fall of 2007. I had assumed that a team was a function of an empire, but after reading that, seems not so. How does it work?

I'd like to try playing on a Metaverse team in a round, but not if my low score is going to drag the team down. Not interested in playing at Beginner just to get a good score. If I remember, in earlier similar games your final score was factored by the level of difficulty...is something like that done in Metaverse League?

Is it possible to play solo in Metaverse League?

Replies will be appreciated, thanks.

CalifDude,

ok, let me see if I can answer all your questions here. :D

When it comes to strategies like Mumblefratz, Purge, Wyndstar or others, realize that at best they are a template for your own gaming experience. There is too much uniqueness in any game to follow them exactly.

As for the Empires, each have their own merits. Mumblefratz is a member of one of the oldest and highest-ranked empires, but it lacks a vocal community (generally); others such as KzintiPatriarch has taken a new empire and brought to it to commanding heights with a very vocal and involved community, others like the one I'm in are small in number but has a very active group of members that have brought us higher in score. In truth, being in an Empire changes nothing in your game whatsoever. I just like being in one so i can communicate with others about the game.

Teams have nothing to do with empires. We had had a thought about making teams empires, but decided that was not a good route to take.

It is true that a higher difficulty will result in an overall higher score, all things being considered equal. In the MVL we have a wide range of players, some very good at high scores, some at fast games, etc. Our goal was just the point of playing the game, not what score you get. We wanted to make sure we offered a different approach to the game then what is normally presented in the Metaverse, and allow for new players to compete and play right along veterans.

Yes, it is possible to play solo, but you wouldn't be on a team. My suggestion: at the start of the next round, locate the description of the game parameters and then play a game on your own following that. See how you like it, how you did, things like that. If you think it works for you, then let us know and we will gladly invite you into the fold.

Hope this helps!

I'll try to answer to the best of my ability, too.

First off, the Tyranny of Evil is the empire to join. It might look like I'm slightly biased on that, but I think it's a pretty objective fact.  :HOT:

As far as the MV League, it's team based, so going it alone wouldn't work. Don't worry about low scores or stuff like that. The main idea here is to have fun and taunt the other teams, even if you have little to back it up. In one case, Mumblefratz and I both were unable to submit games in a round due to Real Life issues. Having an extra player would have been helpful in that round.

I hope you join the league and remember...Tyranny of Evil.  ;)
yes, Motti is correct in syaing the MVL is team based, so to get any form of points or access to the Core forums, you would need to be on a team. That being said, to just try it out, anyone could do that. Our Round threads are easy enough to find, and we have all the stipulations for game setup right in the OP. I've always seen this as one of our greatest assets, that anyone, at any time, try out any of the League games on their own and see how they would do.

And yes, I'm a member of the Tyranny of Evil also :-) We may be few in number but we do manage to compete with the best of them quite handily.

Just joined T of E as Wotan and hope I can contribute. Is there a way I can get the specs for the game played by all in the last round of Metaverse League so I can give it a shot?

Is there a button for a mambers-only forum for T of E somewhere? If it's in the sign-up page I missed it. Thanks.

Hi CalifDude!

Glad to see you pop in and chat mate. I think Silver and Motti covered everything but please feel free to ask as many questions as you, like mate. We're here to help.

I guess the most important thing to remember about the league is that the whole idea is to be able to play and win and beat anyone, regardless of score. We do reward high scores with bonus points but to even that out we offer the same amount of bonus points for a fast game, which not too often can one game be both.

So here in the MVL more than anywhere else does your score not matter.

It's such a cliche but as long as you enjoy playing the types of unique games that the MVL provides (generally speaking) then that is what matters most!!

Personally i have found that the MVL has improved my game by great amounts, through the varying challenges i would not have played else where and through the friendly competition the league offers.

But the help and tips from fellow leaguers is what i would attribute my improved gaming too the most, they really are all a helpfull bunch!

I think you would enjoy playing mate, though i am of course biased!! ;)

Thanks, Neilo.
Silverbeacher, Re the Round five game specs, I note under Minor Races it said "random/enabled in DL" and was curious about the "DL". Was this a DA game, or was it a DL game? I've never played DL and have no great desire to try it. Thanks for your help.
No mate you may play DA or DL, or even TA once it is MV friendly. We have players that have both and some with just DL. It's just the settings differ slightly from DL to DA.
In DL you can only choose to enable or disable Minors, by default if enabled they are random. That is why then Minors in DA are just selected as random, so as to provide an even playing field for both DA and DL players.

If all you wish to play is DA mate, then go for it. It's all good!
;)

prolly in a few days; I know Neilo was trying to redo the Tyranny private forums (due to the old one getting lost to the internet black hole) and there were a few minor MVL Rules issues that the admins and captains were trying to come to some agreement on before proceeding.

Round 6 is ready to go, i am waiting though untill we clarify the submission rule...if we do, though it looks like we are on the right track. I am hoping to have it up in time for the weekend Cmac.

I have an idea for conditions for an upcoming league game, maybe even this one, if there's time:

You must start with one of the evil races, but must also be good-aligned at the end of the game.

This should be interesting since most prefer evil or neutral. Additionally, "going good" might itself be a challenge, as you are forced to pick the crappiest ethical choices, the most useless bonuses, etc (subtle hint to Stardock there, heh). You also won't be able to end your game too early, in case your alignment is still leaning to the right.
