What game or genre would you like to be reborn?

For me I loved the old style space dogfighting games like wing commander. I wish they could have a revival. I also liked elite 2 that was awesome. I heard a rumour that elite 4 is in secret development and is due for release in 2013. Im on the edge of my seat for that one, although I will be 30 then but my kids will be 8 and 7, so I can introduce them to the genre woo. Bet they'll be thrilled.

I also like fantasy RPG like diablo (is diablo 3 ever gonna come out or is that dead?). Anyone rememeber Golden Axe for the Amiga? That was cool, that could be reborn as long as they keep the sound effects!

What old game or genre would you like to see make an updated 21st century appearance?

I agree with space dogfighting thing, though i'm not much of a fan of Wing commander, as have never played it- in england it is so damn hard to get hold of any space sims pre-freelance.

One game i started playing recently, is freespace 2 this game owned. And even though it is now very dated, I play it and instantly i recall my old days(when i was about 7) playing Descent.

As for the diablo front, Blizzard for reasons unkown   like leaving their best selling games for a decade before bothering to produce a sequel- i.e starcraft 2.

I am a Wing Commander fan as well. I would like to see X-COM reborn. I realy liked playing that game. I try and keep an old computer around just so I can still play it, but it is getting harder too now.

Amen! Descent Freespace: The Great War and Freespace two are by far the two games I would like to have revived. Though Freespace 2 came out in 1999, it is still a game I frequently play and enjoy. The storyline is what gets me, though. I'll decide one day that I'll go and play a few missions just for the heck of it and end up going through the entire campaign.

Oooh...Sathanas Juggernauts *drools*.

So, obviously I would like to see a good reinstatement of the space sim, but I'd also like to see another Homeworld-style 3D space RTS come out. That'd be sweet, but sadly I think the genre's dead.

Cosmo, from Apogee Software.

That little, green space critter with suction cups for hands. He was a lot of fun back in the day.

Make him a Windows-compatible game.

It's still available, but it is also still a DOS game.

X-Com.

Mule.

MoM and MOO (MOO3 doesn't count).

The entire Infocom line.

Red Baron.

plus there was this wierd action/shooter with little tiny guys in little tiny submarines living at the bottom of a lake/bay that was waay cool.

Oh, migawd!
Homeworld.

Hehe, Mule was a cool game...havent thought about that one in a good long while.

Starcontrol (the Korath are an obvious homage to the Kohr-Ah)
Diablo - I hope it wont be pay-to-play though
MOO & MOM
Birth of the Federation
Might & Magic - I think IV or V was the best

There aren't many that have gone and can't ever be replaced.

I loved text adventures now we have broken sword, Dreamfall, the longest journey. and many more. hate point and click, so i missed loads.

I loved Elite now we have Darkstar One, a modern day version.

I used to love rpg's like, Ultima, then Diablo, now we have oblivion.

Doom was the starting that took us beyond scrolling shooters, now half life is awesome and we have so many more.

OK. the first time I played gta III will never be forgotten.

I admit, that nostalgia is not me.

So many great games now.
These modern games have a heritage to be proud of, A history to be admired, but I have no quibbles, other than the mass market standardisation of most modern games.

The one thing early gaming history gave us was innovation.

Please give us true innovation back.

Marcus

PS. listening to gamers is a very good idea, keep up that idea Stardock.

Oh yeah....forgot about Ultima! I played from Ultima I (on an Apple IIE) all the way to that last one which was so buggy it really wasnt playable. Some of those were awesome. I think I liked Ultima III the best of all.

ultima was the first of a great series though, III and IV were great. it spawned all that came after. It's hard to beat for its time or compare it to some of its progeny.

Marcus.

PS I'm a convert. I love my gaming past. lol

Re: Infocom

I've always wanted to play a version of "A Mind Forever Voyaging" with modern grafx. *_*

How about the Wizadry series or Infocom's RPGs? I remember playing Zork and the other Infocom games that were text only. They were so well written that it was easy to see the world around you in your mind. And you didn't need a nuclear powered video board!

Wasteland. Yes, I know Fallout was the unofficial sequel but there was just something special about leaving Ranger Station with Angela Deth and company. Hope Fallout 3 continues to be the same type of turn-based RPG the others have been

A Mind Forever Voyaging was a text adventure where you play a sentient AI named PRISM who is first exploring a simulation of a government VR test of social and economic policy, then trying to defend yourself when said government doesn't like the results and tries to pull the plug. . .

I want the old 2D games back. 3D is so overrated these days. Anyone here play Super Metroid or Super Mario on the SNES? Best games of all time if you ask me, especially Super Metroid.

The old space sims were my favorite.

Have Tie and Defender of the Empire on floppy. Xwing on CD. Privateer and RF too.
Couldn't get into the elete sequels too much, but the X series (Unoffical homage to elite) show promise if it weren't so dry.

I miss some of the simple fun games. Epic did a good job with their line. Tyrian, One Must fall, Hearts. Very classy.

oh, anyone remember Lemmings? Played that for hours!

Genre to be reborn: Soon enough turn based strategy games are gonna fit into this category. It seems they are dying (thanks Stardock btw, GalCivII is new to me, but enjoying it!!)

Games to be reborn:
Heroes of Might and Magic III--- turn based, fun battles, RANDOM MAPS...things that are missing in HOMM IV for sure (haven't check HOMM V yet)

Stars: Good base game with crap for graphics. Dress it up with some nice spiffy new graphics and that could be awesome (although GalCiv is satisfying that niche for me personally very well right now)

X-com: No brainer for any development company. Do a decent job in updating graphics, spice up the AI a little, and a little modern flare, make sure it is bug free and wallah...you've just sold many million copies and are very rich......
and no Cenega/Altair didn't follow that plan...they left out too many key components in the UFO series (including "bug free", "updated graphics" and random maps).

No? My first computer was an Amiga2000 though. Amiga games i loved were Speedball 2, Hybris and centurion.

I would still play them today if i could find an Amiga emulator for windows Xp,,,, well there are always emulators around, but finding one with 'coherent' instructions on how to make it work is the big problem?
