Bush commutes Libby sentence. Conservatives nod, Libs cry

The President of the United States, George W. Bush, has apparently commuted the prison sentence of I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby which means that Libby will not be going to jail, despite the original 30-month prison sentence that had been handed down after his conviction.

See news link here: Bush spares Libby from prison (From Reuters, via Yahoo.com)

Personally I think it was the right thing to do, and as the President has noted, Libby still faces a stiff fine, and is still *guilty* and has not been pardoned.  He will still be a pariah in the federal world, and though he may make money on a book deal or on the lecture circuit, he is not someone that is likely to be a grand profiteer from these events.

Though the prosecutor is apparently fuming, and liberals like Leahy, Reid and that ilk are incredibly upset about these events, no real purpose is served by having Libby go to jail.  His actions are far less serious than those of people like, well, that fat ugly sweaty guy that worked for the Clinton admin and tried to steal and/or destroy classified documents related to anti-terrorism efforts (who faced a simple little slap on the wrist for his own actions).

Others may disagree, and I welcome that.  Personally I think justice will never truly be served here, and this entire affair was a whole lot of nothing because Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame kept fanning the fires looking for blood that just wasn't going to be forthcoming.

So, who will be taking up collections to help Libby pay his $250,000 fine?

And who has some meds to provide to Reid, Leahy and company to help calm them down?

Heard Chuck Schumer on the news this morning on the way to work. He ain't happy.

But then up till now, he was always the President's biggest fan and I heard he was actually planning to change to Republican. But this commutation? It was the last straw for Chuck -- after this, Schumer is a Bush hater.

Justice under GWB depends if you are a supporter of his policies and has NOTHING to do with fairness. PROOF of that is that we have two Border Patrol Agents sitting in jail for doing their job and attempting to protect our borders from drug smugglers. We have a former Assistant to the President Libby, who will not serve jail time for breaking the laws of this country. Do not tell me Bush has the right to commute the Libby Sentence. I know that. The issue is was the action justified in the Libby case and why has Bush not acted in the case of the two Border Agents. I guess Bush will not help the Border Agents because Bush does not want to protect our borders given the fact he fails to enforce our laws and allows major gaps in our security even after 9/11!

Bush claimed the Libby Jail sentence was “EXCESSIVE" and that was the reason why he commuted the jail time. The problem with that reason is that the sentence that Libby received is WITHIN the Federal Guidelines for the type of crimes for which Libby was convicted. How can the Libby sentence have been EXCESSIVE as Bush claimed when the sentence was within what the LAW set for the crimes for which Libby was convicted? It is another example of a President that thinks he is a DICTATOR. It does not matter what the laws state. It does not matter what the Courts rule. It does not matter what the Legislature enacts. The ONLY thing that matters is what Bush wants-- That is a Dictatorship. The administration of GWB will go down in the history of the United States the same way as the Inquisition did in European history. The Bush legacy will be a dark chapter in the history of this country and I hope we NEVER repeat that mistake again!

The telling thing about this whole farce is, there was supposed to be this huge national security breach with the "outing" of Valarie Plame.  Yet, the guy who did the "outing" has never once even been charged with it.  If it was such a bad crime, why isn't Armitage being charged?

Libby lied and should be punished for it.  However, Fitzgerald already knew the facts, yet he continued the "investigation", so how could Libby have "obstructed justice".

If you ask me, the biggest criminal in this farce is Fitzgerald himself.  How many millions did he defraud the taxpayers out of by keeping the investigation going over a year after there was nothing more to learn.

Armitage was the First to out Valarie Plane. Libby did the very same thing. The real criminals are Cheney and Bush because the outing was to punish Amb. Wilson for TELLING THE TRUTH. Tenet told Bush in October 2002 that the Yellow cake story was a NOT true and it was removed from a speech Cheney was to give. Then Bush put this LIE back into the most important speech he gives -- the State of The Union Address. The reason no one was charged with outing Mrs. WILSON IS not BECAUSE A CRIME WAS NOT COMMITTED BUT BECAUSE THE LAW THAT WAS INTENDED TO PREVENT THIS THING IS SO COMPLICATED IT IS UNENFORCABLE! It is not just Valarie Plame but ANY agents or contacts she delta with over the years when she was an agent for the CIA! There was a very serious crime committed and Bush and Cheney are GUILTY!

Libby was not convicted of outing Plame, he was convicted of perjury. There's a difference.

I have mixed emotions on this whole ordeal. Libby was a fall guy for bloodthirsty politicians, plain and simple. But Bush's actions were quite bizarre for someone trying to restore faith in a party that is plummetting in the polls.

I agree the actions of Bush and the GOP that continue to support him are setting themselves up for another major loss in November 2008. It does not matter what the issue is-- they are digging a deeper and deeper hole. Immigration, Trade, deficit, Iraq, and what is nothing more then pure politics in dealing with the justice system. It is to total disregard for the laws, Courts and legislature whenever they act in a manor that Bush does not support. The wealth of material for historians from the Bush administration will be Never Ending!

Why do you have to be so dramatic? Your nonsense is the reason nobody takes you seriously.  You need to step away from your obsessive hatred of Bush, and realize your precious democrats are just as bad as you claim Bush is.  Although that doesn't stop you from giving them a pass.

Would you?  If this was a democrat you would give them a pass as you do now.

I do not find it surprising that dems are yelling and Reps are cheering.  It is politics after all - not justice or law, politics.

But what I find just fall on the floor unbelief is Hillary's comments on it!  That is Rich!  As in Marc Rich!
