need help please

ok i am completely new to this whole skinning thing and all i want to do is get a cool looking theme other than the classic windows xp but i have no idea how. i found this site and i downloaded the programs (i think) and i downloaded some themes from the home page but i have no idea how to appy them. could someone please help me out with this.
