Newbie Questions About the Metaverse

Okay, I've done some research into the GC2 Metaverse already. I get the basic idea of it: You play games in a controlled environment (i.e., no cheating or mods enabled), submit your best scores, and receive an overall ranking, plus stuff like military rank for games submitted and medals for various different achievements, which you can then display on your forum posts.
I get all that. I even registered the game and created my own Metaverse character, and I assume that Empires are communities of individual GC2 Metaverse players that get together and make a Web site, talk shop, etc.
I just have a few questions. First of all, are there Metaverse scenarios, or can you only set the options like you do for a plain Sandbox game? I noticed that most of the extra options are grayed out when you're on the options selection screen when starting a Metaverse game.
Hmmm... I guess my second question, really, is this: Is there a good Web site/FAQ/forum post where I can learn what the Metaverse is all about, what some of the different player communities are, etc.? I checked the FAQs here, but they seem to be mainly technical.
