'Starcraft II' Announced To Screams From Koreans

Seriously, They Scream In The Floor Videos

Blizzard officially announced the follow-up to their little known sci-fi RTS franchise Starcraft as part of their world invitational tournament in South Korea this weekend. Starcraft 2 will use an all new-engine allowing larger amounts and larger size units to enter the battle than ever before. Blizzard also stated that the release will come with a complete re-haul of their Battle.net matchmaking service for use with the multiplayer aspect of the title. All three races, the Zerg, Terran, and Protoss, will make their return with new units and tweaks to the old ones. Along with this came the revelation that there will be NO new playable race. Instead Blizzard has decided to focus on expanding the already diverse races and balancing them as much as possible.

So not an MMO...interesting. Does this mean a Diablo-MMO then?  It'll also be interesting to see what Blizzard does here.  If it's just rehashing the original game with better graphics, that'll probably be enough, but I think fans will want something more.

Wouldn't a Diablo MMO be Guild Wars....just.....Hell themed?

I would have much rathered a 'World of Starcraft' than WoW.  The fantasy thing has more or less been done to death and their lore for it isn't all that original (the basis of the races that is) and on top of that I have always like Starcraft's lore more.  But I will take a SC2 since I love RTSs anyways.

As for what they are adding, the videos showed the old units getting some extra powers and stuff and at least a couple of new units were on obvious display for the Protoss (my race ).

What I would like to see - and that I think Blizzard could pull off - is an MMO that evolves. I don't mean just new races, classes, etc. but an MMO where the quests actually impact what's happening in the world. For example, in WoW there are many quests where you're told that by completing it you're making a big difference in the region.  Problem is, nothing actually changes.  I want to see something change and see new quests build off of those to create a virtual, living world.

It may not be technically feasible still, but I think that's where MMO's need to go moving forward. Others have tried the above I believe, but none have done it very well or been as compelling as WoW.

Yea I have been saying the samething for awhile.  That kind of thing would be best for the PvP aspect IMO.  Destroy Tarren Mill and the horde NPCs lose supplies or something of that nature.  When something like that happens I will look at MMORPGs again for sure, till then its not likely I will get sucked into anything again.

Yeah, exactly, and then spawn quests that revolve around rebuilding TM or something.

We should be game designers IMO...

I've created like seven instances for WoW that would be awesome (although some would be for the hardcore raiders).

As usual, this sux! You know what they are doing don't you, trying to clean the game up a bit by making the graphics better and aspects of the game only and doing very little to expand the game and make a new game. This all has to do with making more money on an already popular existing game. Its a shame they can't come out with a new game. I'm sure there are enough game designers in the world to work on this, but quick easy money comes first. If there are enough people screeming maybe they will fall off their chair and hit their head and a new game will come to mind.

Its almost been 10 years, I don't really mind them recycling a bit of their stuff at this point.  From the videos it looks like there will be more than just a few units added to the game and also old units with new features.  I understand your anger but think we should at least let them show a little more of the game before we freak out.

No, I fully expect Starcraft II to end up as MegaMD2010 stated. I think Blizzard would rather put out something that doesn't rock the boat rather than risk harming the franchise on something really new.

I certainly don't think it will be anything radically different although I do expect them to have heros like WC3 which would be a difference, although theres nothing in the videos to get my hopes up.
