erm i have a crash every time i start your mod TextFileArchive (.\String\English.str) missing Label: 'ID'
any ideas

Unless it was updated, the mod was made during beta 1. So it won't neccesarily work under beta 2.

This is extremely out of date and really shouldn't be a sticky anymore. The .entity are no longer ASCII.

Agreed. This was made a long time ago, and is definitely outdated, and only serves to confuse newcomers at the moment. It came, it was moderately useful, and now should be terminated.

By the way...I'm back, and chaos follows me.

Is there any sort of guide/walkthrough up for the current release then that I am missing?

What would be nice is if someone with the knowledge could post an example of what values you are associated with what for planets, caps, frigates, bombers, structures. Unless this is up and I can't find it?

Something that says if you want to change the weapons strength and number of fighters available on a Capital ship, you need to change this line and this line. (I know this is pretty basic, but something that would take a knowledgeable person 5 minutes to post could probably save 100's of posts over the life of the game.

great tutorial, very informative. just have one question however. i can open the .entity files provided with your mod and tutorial no problem with Notepad, they appear exactly as they are supposed to. however, when i open the original game files (or any other SoaSE file) i get a LONG single line of text (readable) with all the numbers replaced with random characters. i've tried looking at the files with and without the 1.02 patch, using different text editors, and even fresh installs on different machine, all to no avail. its obviously a formatting problem, but one that i dont know how to fix. if anyone has had a similar problem and figured out how to fix it i'd be grateful for some guidance.

That because the game files are in Binary. This tutorial was created when they were in text form. You can get the text form from the beta mod tools in the sticky.

Can you only mod gameplay? I'd want to mod the internet connection aspect. Make the way to connect easier to do.

the game version is displayed in the lower right of the screen when on the menu page it dosent matter if u r running a mod or not the version is always there mine says version 1.5 and runs every mod fine but every two days i get an error about the mini dump if that happens just reset comp and it works fine also try to have the computer tell u where the reg file is for the game because if u have to reinstall it for any reason the computer can sumtimes miss the reg file so u may have to find it and delete it ur self

I have a bit of a problem... When I open the .entity files with notepad, it comes up exactly like this: BIN

and goes on and on... It happens for every single one, and I can't figure out what to do. There is no way to edit it. Can you help me??? (BTW, would it have anything to do with having Vista???)

It is a different code instead of the original ASCII that they originally released. That is what this mod was originally for. I wish that they would have left it ASCII so I could mod a few other things, but alas, with the last update, It switched all of mine. Now question is, is there a way to translate it to ASCII to mod the entity file then switch it back and have it work.

The 1.1 patch notes say we'll be releasing a new convertdata.exe that will convert from binary to text and text to binary.

well I also read in the modding text that came with the complete dev kit that it doesnt matter if it is ASCII or Binary, so for now, I have just substituted ASCII for the binary for now.

I'm posting here because I thought it would be best to use an existing thread.

When creating mods (ie putting all the files together into the relevant 'mods' folder) do you need to include all the gameinfo files? or only those you changed?
Will Sins load all the .entity files, etc from the mods folder, then proceed to load any it doesn't find from its original location?

A quick question - can you still use the straight ASCII instead of binary? Every time I try to stick even a single, untouched ASCII .entity file in (Forgetools 3 into v1.16), it minidumps the game.

forge tools 3 is for sins 1.15 NOT sins 1.16, so that is the cause of your minidumps

:)  Would love to see an update on your mod Silent.  I've been modding and well... haha, tweaking is what i call it, but have learned sorta by jumping in and asking questions while treading water.  :)  It works, but was curious as to your tutorial and mod. Would love to see it for the new versions 1.17/1.03 or  1.18/1.04 which is coming next week.

Thought it would be a great help to those starting out.
