How do I make an alliance?

Yeah.. I have really good relationships with a race, and we both have the Alliance technology, so.. How the heck do I actually form an alliance with them? :sniff!:

Go to diplomacy and choose alliance as one of the treaties.

1. You have to research Alliance tech
2. The Empire you want to allie with has to have "Close" relationships with you
3. That Empire has to have Alliance tech also

Once all this is the case you will see Alliance in your diplomacy screen. :)

Currently, they're very much a two-edged sword, though... do Alliances confer any tangible advantage, like increased trade revenue or free tech-points?

If all races allign with you you win the game. It also gives some form of protection in case you get attacked, as the other civs you are alligned with will declear war on the agressor. Not sure if there are other bonuses.

My feeling is that its very similar to "Mutual Protection Pact" in Civ3, except with the additional bonus is that it can be used as a mechanism for victory, unlike Civ3's MPP.

Also unlike Civ3, you have to be very good friends with the target civ to have the option, whereas in Civ3 you could just "buy" them to your side. Sorry for the Civ3 comparison, thats the only other turn-based strategy game I've played recently.

if you are allied with a race and they go to war, as an ally you are expected to follow and join the battle unless you want to break the treaty, which usually drops the relations down a few notches. and if you go to war and then sue for peace, other things can happen you might not like either.

alliances are things to be thought thru and not casually enetered into.

try a few thinngs and watch what happens
