Scuttling question

Is there a quicker way to scuttle many selected units?

Other than hitting "tab h tab h tab h tab " repeatedly

use the "alt" key to select more of the same type

eh?

I already have the units that I want to scuttle selected.

I dunno... I figured if you selected them all then hit the scuttle button they all would... That doesn't work?

not that i could figure.

It only scuttles the "active" unit of the entire selection

tried some variations like alt H and shift H as well

I had a fleet of 450 ships that was lagging my system down in a critical way. So I thought I would scuttle all the scouts in a quick fix.

Very impressive sight seeing all those ship attacking a system.

I can get fleets up to around 200 ships before I notice any slow down of the game, though i think it's more the total number of ships all the AI's have as well as mine that was killing my PC.

i bet that was impressive... only real ship mod I've done is making TONS of fighters/bombers ...

We may consider other scuttle methods, but we are concerned about the ease of accidentally scuttling many units at once.

I can see that

*blows up everything around home planet, sending it flying out of orbit*
woops...

oh hey, and what happened to the life support pods that were proposed?

Home. ACCESS.

I can see what you're getting at Blair but just make scuttling a repetition of one key 'X' amount of times. Ex, if the scuttle key is alt+h, make the user press alt+h three times repeatedly and it'll start a countdown. Also include a cancellation button, probably alt+j or something, and there we go.

I think the option to scuttle a ship should be disabled during battle...

Why? Is there something wrong with destroying a ship that's about to be destroyed anyway?

yeah, the ship about to be destroyed gets scuttled by its owner and he gets resources back... thats super GEH!

Ah - the simple solution there is to not get resources back from scuttling a ship.

Perhaps the best thing to do is to force the ship to return to a shipyard for deconstruction if it needs to be reclaimed for resources. So your options are 'scuttle' and 'recycle'.

I could deal with that, right now , you get resources no matter what..

I'm all for the recycle yard. Hell it could even be a new building. If you build it you get say 60% or so of the materials back if not you only 25%. Each level you refine it your return increases. It is a good eco-friendly subsystem! I can sense some good marketing mileage out of this idea.

Also, regarding the need to destroy many units at once, Total Anhilliation and Supreme Commander do this well by allowing you to destroy everything you have selected, but with a very deliberate key command of ctrl+shift+k, so you (should) never hit it by accident.
