Thoughts on the Beta

Short and sweet - I haven't played the game too much yet.

1. The music is awesome (better than in galciv 2).

2. I love the epic scale of the game. I love how other star systems seem really far away and how phase jumping to them takes minutes and minutes. It really helps create an epic sense to the game.

3. Automation options with your ships is cool.

Some things that could be better:

1. better sound effects and graphics with weapons!! Laser sound effects just don't sound right.

2. Don't like how you have to waste time hovering over each tech with your mouse to see what it does. This is probably unavoidable. Oh well, I guess you just have to memorize the tech tree. It would be nice if at least during single player games against computers, if the game pauses when you are in the tech screen. A basic suggesstion would be to include a tech tree in the retail version.

3. I don't know if this is a bug, but when I traveled to another star system, I noticed that when I went back to my home star system, everything suddenly got real dark. It was hard to see stuff. A bug???

4. It would be cool if when your ships are in battle, you could have a cinematic camera option (if you can afford the time!!!) Where you see ships duking it out like the automated ship battles in galciv 2.

5. Customizable ships like in galciv 2!!!! Here is my suggestion: obviously you couldn't do this during play. However, outside of play, before you start a game, you could take time customizing only how your different ships look. So you can customize in the same way as in galciv2 with all the options, but only how they look. In other words, you create your scout frigate, capital ship, etc. Again, not in terms of functionality (weapons, defense, etc.) but only in terms of how they look. You could then also customize your race name and other stuff, race abilities??, and use any JPEG to represent your race leader (would need approval before multiplayer games so that people don't have nude pics, etc.

Thats it for now, I will add to this post when I think of more!!!

Customizable ships aren't happening.

not even in how they look?? Would that take too much memory? Can you give me some reasons?

Also, I read something where it would be nice for shield effects to be more obvious. I agree with this also.

Hi Stanley, thx so much for the comments and ideas.

We've limited customizing ships in-game to just choosing abilities for the capitalships because its a bit too cumbersome for a real-time game.

However, it will be very easy to modify the appeareance of your race's icon, ships, weapons, planets, shields or anything in the game if you like and you are interested in modding. Already, a number of people have worked out what needs to be done to adjust the behavior and appearance of things and its really not that hard. Closer to release we'll also be releasing a set of tools to help out with this. If you hang around the modding thread or in the sins irc channel (irc.stardock.net with channel #sins) you can hook up with people who would probably be interested in helping you learn how to do it. Again, closer to release we'll be helping out as well.

Weapons sounds are generally poor in all space RTS games, apart from Starwars licenced games.

This reminds me of something not everyone might know. You can use ctrl-bandbox to focus on things. This is handy for grabbing a single fighter and zooming on him as he ducks and dodges in the midst of a large battle. This is effectively what I do to get a cinematic camera for the time being

you mean hold down control while you band box select?
