Gfx, will it be improved?

After playing the beta I must say that I'm a bit dissapointed with the gfx, ship gfx particulary and also the weapon sounds.

I would say its on par with Homeworld 2, which was released ages ago, and worse than Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. Not really what you would expect from a game being released in 2007.

Are there any plans to improve the gfx significantly or is this basically what we will get in release?

Sounds seem fine to me, and it was mentioned that a lot of the Gfx we are seeing are not the high resolution versions.

A few extra weapon and damage effects, and it's fine with me. The backgrounds on the other hand................... are too big.

its the first draft, i think the idea is to get the game itself and the interfaces all running smoothly then the polish will be added last of all,

if you look at things from another point of view, the example of someone building a car its usually built engine first the bodywork and extras are added last, although cars like games can crash.. oh forget it, basically i dont think we will see what the game is really like until the full release

an example would be in this tread

it shows before and after pics of Galactic Civilizations II: Beta

oh   does that include the ships? (no offense)

The background owns I love space that's not black. Overall this game reminds me a lot of Time of Defiance. Never got into that game, maybe I should give it anotehr go

Yes, some of them.

Looking at the Beta screenshots the only ships I can see need improving are the Kol battleships, up close the textures look a bit low res.

Some of the ships are basically placeholders at the moment, I'm saying some, not all. If you guys have an issue with any particular ships, would be helpful if you say which they are.

The backround feels like an all encompassing nebula, and it's very disconcerting. I don't want a black empty space backround, but this is a bit far IMO. Variety would be good - anyone played Freespace 2? That game had a lot more variety in nebulas and stars in the levels (not as a whole game - that'll be too hard).

Damn you Warnstaff, I was just gonna suggest that grrr!

anyone played Freespace 2?

Yes (FS2 ftw!). I agree the nebulae look fantastic (especially with SCP enhancements). The only concern is that in Sins some ships (esp. TEC) may be difficult to see against a blackish background.

FS2 was really good!

The ending=superb.

Hm, thats a bit worrying. Will there be a way to mod this game, as in GC II, where you can use your own ship models? Like the Star Trek mod for that game.

I always liked the Homeworld backdrops in how they were beautiful, but changed with your viewing angle.

Ouch... Gameplay > gfx .. I always say.. but daaamn lol. Better add those moving turrets and some nice dmg decals to divert the attention of people actually zooming in, like mentioned above, it is 2007 after all. (note: I dont think the graphics are actually ugly, but I thought the beta was all low textures - bit surprised that this is it.)

i honestly thought that was mentioned in the guide to the beta about the game being low res for the beta, it looks good already but i thought the finished product would look even better, its early days yet though theres still plenty of time for things to happen thhe game itself is addictive as is

You guys have your texture quality set to highest I take it?

technically, we could make the textures larger, but it would make the game unrunnable on most if not all computers. Again, just want to know if you guys are talking about any ship in particular, you may be looking at something that is placeholder. I agree, there are a few things in the game that need fixing up. ie. carrier, trade port.

Overall though, for an RTS, I think we stand up to supreme commander and others in the graphics department. My opinion... I do know though, we arn't perfect, and it is what we will stride for...

If the option is there, it's all good. I'm an independent developer myself and, while I recognize that having high-level graphics options enabled at all times would make any computer run slowly, there's no reason that I can see why not to leave the switches in for scalability purposes. Why not make your graphics scale up as well as down? If people are still playing it five years down the road, wouldn't it be nice if they could turn up the detail and still have a good-looking game?
