Poltical Machine beta 2A available (0.85)

Lots of enhancements and goodies.

A new build is available. In the short time we've had sicne the last beta, we've tried to address as much of the feedback as we can.

Please tell us if we're on the right direction and which big trouble spots you see that we need to address.

Thanks!

Is there something wrong with Stardock Central? Every time the automatic update gets the downloading file 3 of 4 it crashes to Windows. Is there another way to get the new Political Machine beta?

Yea, they #$@# something up yesterday.

Here's the fix: http://storage.stardock.com/files/stardockcentral132.exe

Three things I noticed:

Intro video playback was corrupted. Looked similar to when a movie reel slides off frame and you see part of the bottom at the top.

Selecting Hardware Mouse Cursor and restarting causes NO cursor to be visible.

Random Play "Ready" button is not selectable under any conditions.

WinXP, GF 4 5950 Ultra, P4 3.06 ghz, Audigy 2, 1024 mb ram.

Win XP... GF Ti4400 ... 512 MB ram... AMD Athlon XP2600+ 1913 Mhz

The video difficulties seem to have regressed to more like the first build -- lots of trouble with long delays.

The game seems marginally more difficult, although I still won easily with no ads or campaign speeches -- just lots of HQs, 3 endorsement, some operatives, and a few TV shows.

Hi,

Just finished my first game on the new version. Much improved! Played on challenging level. Democrats won Texas but lost California. Go figure.

I found a LOT of issues in the game. It's a beta so that's to be expected though. I'm pleased with how the game is developing and look forward to playing more games.

- Several options in fantasy play start at 0. Better to start them at the midpoint.

- Fantasy play still isn't operational. Or at least the "ready" button never lit up.

- When you build level 1 HQ, there is an "\n" in the descrption.

- Fixer text doesn't fit (also smear merchant).

- Most operatives have reduntant text with their description listed twice, once in white and once in purple.

- Political quips should be lowercase in smear merchant text.

- In the endorsement of NOSCP text, African American should be hyphenated.

- Endorsement for NCLU, the Constitution isn't capitalized. It should be.

- Also, you don't capitalize First Amendment, Second Amendment, etc. in the various endorsement descriptions. Not sure if FA, SA, etc. should be capitalized.

- The Christian Confederation description is a bit... ahhh, loaded. It says something about "traditional American values." This isn't entirely accurate. As with every generation, there are more than one competing set of values which that generation embraces. Not to mention that Jews (among other groups) have been present in America since before the Revolutionary War. I suspect most Jews would disagree that traditional American values are inherently Chrisitan. I suggest "conservative Christian values" as replacement text.

- The electoral votes in the different states are off. I think you used 2000 values when setting the points for states. California is 55, not 54 for example. NY should be 31, Texas should be 34, etc. I am very into polling data and have been building a new website all about this year's electoral contest. I'll e-mail a map of the electoral college to you.

- The radio, tv, and newspaper ads now have descriptions of their effect. Unfortunately, I favor, I oppose, He favors, etc. all list the same effect.

- Television ads are overly potent. In reality, putting tv ads in one state have little effect in areas outside of that market. The only time most are aware of the ad are if CNN (or whomever) shows it as part of a news article. I suggest lowering the national effect. Perhaps doing +25% for neighboring states (under the argument that television ads carry over into that state) and +10% for the rest of the country.

- I suggest a lower price for travel. In my game I basically bankrupted myself and found myself barely able to travel starting halfway through the game. My opponent outspent me 3:1 in the game and had about 4x as many tv ads as I did. Even my few ads sucked away most of the income I brought in from my headquarters. So even if a person has little money left, it would still be nice to be able to travel a bit.

- Newspaper ads for supporting a position still say, "X Blasts Y in..."

- Giving a speech stil doesn't list the effect of various speeches.

- Graphics appear a bit off. Candidates and operatives and such sometimes appear in the ocean.

- The graphics sometimes appear extra-large. A double-sized operative or plane, for example. One time I saw a large plane fly in from thte left side of hte screen. Did a speech (at twice the normal graphic size), then flew back off the left side of the screen. The ticker indicated he flew to California.

- In the "news" function, there are blurbs about "SCOTT" and "SCOIT". I have no idea what these mean.

- In the "news" function, it sometimes say something about speeches on the environment, gay marriage, or whatever. It wasn't clear what this was talking about.

- I bought a fixer. Sent it to Florida, where it removed my operative, not my opponent's.

- My opponent did not pursue endorsements. This may have just been my game, my skill level (challenging), or coincidence. He did buy lots and lots of operatives though (usually smear merchands and spin doctors. At least one fixer).

- Does the intimitador have an effect? That's the guy that lowers the enemy percentage by 5% per week. I put it in a state but it seemed to have no effect. I want to study this further though.

- Jaded consultant text doesn't fit (or is missing a "." at the end).

- My opponent campaigned on against my judgement, compassion, etc. I found no way to do that style of campaigning myself.

- At the start of election night a newspaper suddenly appeared saying my opponent was blasting me. He then took CA which I thought I had. Could the computer have gotten a free turn?

All in all, it's a good improvement. And a challenge now. Still needs work, but your efforts are definitely paying off.

Played another game. Or at least 18/41 turns of another game. (see below)

- Clicking no longer aborts the opening movie (pressing a key still does)

- Red ?'s seem to stay for a while. You might want to make them just stay for, oh, say 3 turns or so. In states where both candidates have HQ's they'll both avoid the ?. All that means is that a potentially major state gets ignored.

- The consultant seems to be adding 4%, not 5. Not sure about this, but you might want to check on this.

- My game ended when pressing "next turn" failed to do anything. Very strange. Bush got an endorsement, took out 1-2 ads against me, and 95% of the map switched to various shades of red. He then zoomed operatives all over the place. Clicking on next turn did nothing. I eventually had to abandon the game.

- You can only press candidate info once per turn. Pressing it again after that does nothing.

- During the game you can change the candidate's state. It seems to have no game effect, but you might want to disallow this during a game. It is inappropriate to have functionality that is both useless and potentially confusing.

- When you pick a candidate, they don't appear to be in a sensical order. They're not divied by either alphabetical order or by party. I suggest selecting a party button which then shows all the candidates available for that party.

- Suggestion: The pre-made candidates don't appear to be balanced. Once the game is pretty well set, you might want to balance them so that they're even in terms of points. Being from a bigger state might give them a several state penalty.

- Suggestion: Someone talked about "types" of candidates. For example, an incumbent. This may give them a beginning awareness bonus across the board. But in exchange it costs several points that can't be used elsewhere.

Or the Mafia-like candidate. You might start them with several fixers, smear merchants, and extra cash. In return they lose a bunch of points that can't be spent elsewhere, and can't make spin doctors, and consultants. Also can't be the incumbent.

I'm sure you can think of other "types" of candidates as well. A "tech" candidate, a "goody-goody" candidate, etc. As folks to brainstorm ideas for you if you want to put folks to work for you.

- Clicking no longer aborts the opening movie (pressing a key still does)

And hitting escape in particular will abort the opening movie, but will jump straight to the options screen.

Lack of financial awareness - Is there an easy way to see whether you're running in the red or not due to advertising? Managed to get myself stuck in a small state without enough money to travel. Fundraising wasn't useful enough to get me out of the hole and killing off a couple of advertising campaigns still didn't get me out, so rather than discontinue every advertising campaign I had just to get out of Nebraska, I just spent all available stamina for the rest of the game on political capital and bought quite a few of the special endorsements and a whole slew of operatives. Took a beating on the issues that my opponent was being very vocal about in his advertising, but still won handily. Some sort of warning that I was running low on funds (like TCM would do) or perhaps listing the projected funds for the following turn under the current budget or such would be handy. Regardless, it was rather amusing to have a candidate up and disappear into Nebraska half-way through the year and run his campaign from a bunker...

Had 2 occasions where I couldn't get the TV interview to run. Once on the blog.com interview where I'd be given the option to go to the interview, but it'd never actually begin it. Tried re-entering the state with no luck. 2nd time the prompt to go on the interview wouldn't ever come up. Didn't recognize the show icon. Had plenty of stamina both times.

Otherwise looking pretty good! Very much like the national effect of advertising and the more immediate effect of the special interest endorsements. Do need some sort of warning for when you're deficit spending and getting near the danger point for slow folks like me.

Pentium III 1.4GHz, 256Mb RAM, Win2K, Geforce 4 MX440 64Mb

The latest beta shows a completely messed up map on my system. The size of the map seems to big to fit, the available items on the map like the presidential candidates, the state HQ and the the selection cursors are misplaced and a few triangles with a basic color are the only overlay. The triangles switch color when you pick another view (like wealth, awareness).
These problems were not the case with the 2 previous betas.

I played another two games. Both ended in crashes.

Game 1 ended after 16 turns. Crashed to windows for no discernable reason.

Game 2 ended after 10(?) turns. The computer player popped up an endorsement. I closed it and a different one popped up. I couldn't close it. The music continued on and on and on for about two minutes, but I couldn't close the window. Nor could I escape back to windows. I eventually had to reboot the computer.

Was playing both games with an unusual strategy. I was building no HQ's and was getting endorsements and taking out tv ads instead. Was curious if I could compete for a game that way. I was doing well in both games until they crashed.

I'll putter with the game a bit more, but if the crashes keep up I'll shelve it until the next beta.

--Aaron

PS, A possible bug: Even though I had no HQ in a state, when I went to take out an ad I was able to see whether the ad would have a thumbs-up or thumbs-down for the various parties. Not sure why it would do this if I couldn't see the various party positions in the state. Is this based on the state party or the national party views?

Hey guys! Thanks for the prompt feedback on the new beta2A build...I'll address what I know.

>>About 2/3 of the way through my opponent became HUGE (his picture, his plain etc):
-THis is a prob with B1 that must have crept back in. Should be a straightforward issue to fix.

>> When you make a level 3 HQ you get a little guy with a suitcase, who is he?
- He's known as a "Campaign Operative" He boosts your awareness in whichever state he travels to (think of him as a movable L1 HQ). This is something we'll definatly need to document In-Game though.

>> Several options in fantasy play start at 0. Better to start them at the midpoint.
-Agreed.

>> Fantasy play still isn't operational. Or at least the "ready" button never lit up.
- I think we got some crashes at the last minute and decided to disable the mode until B3 (to get the major bugs fixed).

>>When you build level 1 HQ, there is an "\n" in the descrption.
-Yeah, we'll be fixing all the \n weirdness in B3...code is being added to covert these to line-breaks.

>>Fixer text doesn't fit (also smear merchant).
-Working on getting a scrollbar on that screen for longer text.

>>Red ?'s seem to stay for a while. You might want to make them just stay for, oh, say 3 turns or so. In states where both candidates have HQ's they'll both avoid the ?. All that means is that a potentially major state gets ignored.
-In the end, that's the major purpose of the Red ?'s...you suddenly have to make a choice ("Bite the Bullet" or take that state off your campaign strategy). What the AI was probably doing was assessing the situation and saying "I can still win if i focus on these states now instead of those ones with the red ?"...or perhaps he was just afraid In the end, though, the AI will assess the situation and make a logical choice in the matter.

>>You can only press candidate info once per turn. Pressing it again after that does nothing.
- Bug, will fix.

>> During the game you can change the candidate's state. It seems to have no game effect, but you might want to disallow this during a game. It is inappropriate to have functionality that is both useless and potentially confusing.
-Another bug. You shouldnt be able to change your homestate during the game...we'll tweak the UI to turn this off.

- When you pick a candidate, they don't appear to be in a sensical order. They're not divied by either alphabetical order or by party. I suggest selecting a party button which then shows all the candidates available for that party.
- Yes this would definatly be nice...I'll talk with the UI guys about this one, see if we can squeeze it in

- Suggestion: The pre-made candidates don't appear to be balanced. Once the game is pretty well set, you might want to balance them so that they're even in terms of points. Being from a bigger state might give them a several state penalty.
- Agreed.

Also, I see many of you are having random crashes. Stardock Central has a free program available for DL called "SmartException" that makes it EXTREMELY easy for us to find out where these crashes are occouring (opposed to wading through code for hours, making guesses as to the possible problem). If you guys could, DL SmartException and run it in the BG while playing the beta builds. THen, when a crash occours, pull the log file and send that puppy to us, and we can more easilly track down the bugs and get this game as stable as possible Thanks again for all your help.

Oh, and ignore weirdness on the "News" screen...that's being polished by me, and will be in for the next Beta (3).

I think you might need to get a drengin.net account, which costs $60.00.

If only I could afford it... *sigh*

Alas, I'm only 13

Great feeedback guys!

If you run into weird problems (graphical, crashing, etc.) please make sure to tell us what OS you're running and what video card you're using with how much video RAM.

How does a political operative differ from a consultant? Both raise awareness in states they travel to.

Also (again!), I have Windows XP and an NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 video card with (I think) 64MB VRAM.

Aaron, right here is good enough. We're watching this discussion closely.

Your machine sounds like it's perfect for the game.  Email me the .cra files though ([email protected]).

The smart exception info will be crucial.

The operatives and consultants are basically the same.

OK, couple of quick points. Just got 2A and started my first game. The video seems worse than before. I lost almost everything on the map, so I decided to just stay put and try to fundraise and build capital. Big supprise! The ticker said that I was the "President Elect" in week 12! Guess it helps to have the press on your side! I must have already won!
It crashed on me when I tried running it. At the "candidate seleciton" screen, the word "loading..." doesn't turn into "start game" and my PC froze. I'm going to uninstall/fresh reinstall. (I had to do that in the last version also, after the "delete graphics file" fix didn't work for me.)
Played another game. Got 10-15 turns before it crashed.

Below is the entire crash file. There is no debug information (even though the last line suggests some should be forthcoming).

Hi all,

I thought this build was MUCH more challenging than the last (which is good). I only noticed a couple mistakes (in addition to others listed in this group):

- "Stabilized" misspelled in the HQ upgrade window.
- I think the HQ upgrade window is a little confusing in that it lists the price for the NEXT HQ level, but the stats listed are for the CURRENT HQ level. Maybe the stats listed should also be for the next level since it is an upgrade window...
- And then a final, nitpicky, kinda obscure thing I noticed this time . The rule for displaying the flag is that the star field should always be in the upper LEFT corner (whether the flag is hung horizontally or vertically). So the flags in the auditorium in the intro are backwards. And incidentally, so is the wallpaper during gameplay...

I had no problems with video glitches or crashes. I did have a question--anyone know what the color of the political opportunity question marks means?

Thanks!
Yes. The basic color of a question mark is yellow. It means that it may be either good or bad (usually good).

If you have an HQ in the state, it'll tell you if it's good or not. Red means bad, green means good.

More notes from another game with the new beta:

- I was going to take out some ads (against Tax Cuts, against War in Iraq), but then I noticed the thumbs up/thumbs down for these ads differed from the ones in the State Issues window. Not sure if that's a bug or not (both these ads show thumbs down for independents, even though in the state issues window independents show up as indifferent...)
- My fixer killed my own smear merchant instead of my opponent's
- On a couple turns I couldn't make the ASSETS window come up.
- My opponent put a level 3 HQ, a spin doctor, a consultant, and several ads in Vermont at about week 20. In spite of this, his popularity there never went above 0%.

Just a few quick bugs I've noticed:
-The opening video issue everyone's been seeing, also on mine it seems to loop infinitely (or until I hit escape)
-hitting escape to jump out of the movie randomly drops me to an option screen of some sort (game setup, game options etc...)
-Alt-tab is still a bit flaky, 3 out of the 5 times I tried it crashed (I didn't have SmartException running so I don't have a log)

One question: is there a way to run the game windowed? passing a -w option flag doesn't seem to do it
